To not know how to treat my sore throat

I know this sounds bonkers but I don’t know what to do with myself. I’m 40 years old, used to suffer with tonsillitis often when I was younger, have had sore throats in the past etc and often they were linked with stress (GCSEs, Alevels, wedding planning etc) but I grew out of that. This week was very very stressful/upsetting and I’m now ill - slightly sniffly, tired and a severely sore throat like nothing I’ve ever experienced.

It isn’t tonsils and seems to be more down the back but swallowing is so painful I want to cry and try to avoid swallowing, I can’t sleep despite being exhausted due to the pain.

So far I have:

Taken pain relief - paracetamol and ibrupofen
honey and lemon drinks
salt water gargling
losenge
ice cream
herbal tea

any other ideas?

Chloraseptic throat spray linked is fab. And I know you've gargled with salt. Good luck.

Oblomov23 · 01/04/2023 22:24

I'd take a nytol sleeping tablet too.

pavillion1 · 01/04/2023 22:24

i second the Difflam spray

Oh man I've just finished my antibiotics beginning of the week with acute bacterial tonsilitis. It was hell I couldn't sleep lying down so had to sit up in bed propped up. Nothing worked not even diflam.

Now its back and sore again but in the middle like yours, trying to get a gp appointment, feels like pharyngitis to me but we shall see.

Good luck not much I can offer as nothing seems to work

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2023 22:32

Right, dh will head to pharmacy in the morning and tonight I’ll take a sleeping tablet. Re the stressful week, I actually called my gp and she prescribed sleeping tablets for a week. I’ve only taken one so far so I can take one tonight. Hoping I’ll wake up on the mend.

Thank you everyone! Oh and I won’t be calling anyone for acupuncture.

Gargling with salt and water is good. Also, sage tea. If you don't like the taste, just gargle with it as opposed to drinking it.
Manuka honey will also help. Also, keep your neck warm. I'm very prone to sore throats and I find wearing a scarf really helps (daft as that may sound).
Hope you feel better soon.

Aerielview · 01/04/2023 22:38

Also, dissolve 2 dispirin and gargle with it before swallowing.

Easterfunbun · 01/04/2023 22:39

I had this before Xmas. The worst sore throat of my life and I’ve had tonsillitis. I didn’t sleep for 10 nights and normal saliva running down the back of my throat would burn and make my throat seize. I tried everything and just sort of had to endure it. I alternated between ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine. Have you got some night nurse?

Moonshine5 · 01/04/2023 22:42

Try steam.

sakura06 · 01/04/2023 22:43

I gargle TCP diluted with warm water. It's brilliant. It sounds like this is a nasty sore throat. Hope you feel better soon.

VestaTilley · 01/04/2023 22:46

Get to your GP. Could it be quinsy?

I used to have awful sore throats before being diagnosed coeliac and giving up gluten. If you have an undiagnosed auto immune disease that could be your problem: your body is just fighting on too many fronts.

In the meantime, bed rest, salt water gargling and paracetamol should help symptoms, but you need a doctor.

Chessetchelsea · 01/04/2023 22:47

Raw garlic. Honestly. Sounds mad and you’ll stink but it’ll work! Crush a few cloves and chew/swallow.

LIZS · 01/04/2023 22:47

Throat spray like covonia, chilled drinks or icecream,

VestaTilley · 01/04/2023 22:47

Yes to scarves - and a vest!!

Oh goodness me I’ve just had this. It was honestly horrific. The worst sore throat I’ve ever had and some of the worst pain. I had to brace myself to swallow. The worst of it lasted 4 days and the it finally improved. I was totally well otherwise so it baffled me.

I basically did everything you’ve done but I also used a throat spray the pharmacist gave me alongside some liquid ibuprofen, it didn’t give much relief but it helped me to sleep. I also gargled salt water aswell and ate losengers like they were going out of fashion.

It’s rotten!

platanenweg · 01/04/2023 22:49

Gargling with salt water always does the trick for me. Keep at it regularly.

Whataretheodds · 01/04/2023 22:50

Yes gargle with soluble aspirin (then swallow it) and also gargle with dilute tcp (don't swallow).

Boil up fresh ginger, mix the liquid with manuka honey and lemon juice.

CuteAsDuck · 01/04/2023 22:52

All of the above but just to add pineapple juice and also marshmallow root if you can get it. H&B or the likes might have a tea.

I am plagued with sore throats and have tried everything over the years!

HouseIsOnFire · 01/04/2023 22:54

Sounds the same as what I've had this week, left me completely poleaxed.

I found constant warm drinks a relief during the day and thankfully had a new course of sleeping tablets for the night, along with paracetamol, ibroprufen an antiseptic lozenges from boots (god I miss merocaine)

I also am running a humidifier next to me which I think soothed my throat? But is definitely helping with the lingering cough.

Pennymixture · 01/04/2023 22:55

It's the worst. I also get raging sore throats linked to stress.

For me it's boiling hot tea and/or chicken soup, TCP gargle, and (most importantly!) cocodomol and ibuprofen to get me through.

Go for the big guns with painkillers. Paracetamol won't cut it.

Fizzadora · 01/04/2023 22:55

I gargle with vinegar (either) at first sign of any throat tingling. It usually heads it off or numbs it if it has got a hold. Mix it with a bit of warm water if required.

Oh wow my triggers for tonsillitis are cold wind on my neck and stress! So nice to know I'm not only one where stress can trigger it cos I thought maybe it was just coincidence.

Changeau · 01/04/2023 23:19

OP my sore throat was so bad I took morphine and it didn't help (liquid morphine that had been given to me when I broke my arm a year ago). Th only thing that helped wad slowly eating a tub of Ben and Jerry's.
