To wake up from a dream where I've committed a crime and covered it up

phewimawake · 30/03/2023 21:05

First dream like this was last week, I actually woke up trying to remember what awful thing I had done (capital crime) and where I had hidden the evidence. It was so so real, like I'd actually buried (literally) some memory so deep I'd actually forgotten but had just been reminded. Like a name on the tip of your tongue feeling only ghost like.

I can invoke the feeling at any point now, like a terrible dread, if I recall the dream. I've tried doing this and really sensing what comes up but it just gets worse and feels more real.

I've googled it and it seems to be related to change / being under pressure. That said I'm a bit haunted and am doubting myself.

AIBU to just ignore it, or does anyone have experience of if this 'means something' or what to do?

AINBU - it'll pass

I've not told anyone irl. Thanks Mumsnet

I've had several dreams like this this week! Awful, though I can't ever remember the details long after waking, I did something terrible and was so scared about getting caught.

Then sometimes during the day I get a little pang of guilt/fear and rack my brain trying to think what it is I did, but it's from the dreams.

I hadn't thought to look it up but am currently changing jobs so trying to wrap up my old role, and also in the process of moving house, so pressure makes sense!

Have you got a lot going on?

DollyPartonsBeard · 30/03/2023 21:09

I've had this! I dreamt I'd hidden my ex's body in a rolled up rug in a caravan that was about to be demolished. No idea if I'd killed my ex or not, and I remember being shocked in my dream that I'd forgotten about hiding the body.

We didn't have an acrimonious split, so no idea why I dreamt that. Stress can do weird things to your dreams, though. (As can nicotine patches, leant that one the hard way)

DeoForty · 30/03/2023 21:10

I dream that I've murdered someone and disposed of the body more often than I feel comfortable admitting. The relief when waking is almost euphoric.

There probably is reason behind it, but unless something is a nightly theme then I'd probably ignore it.

TempName247 · 30/03/2023 21:17

Yes I have this too, the feeling of dread is so real, I agree it is like a memory that you’ve done something

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/03/2023 21:18

Some dreams are awful! I remember studying dreams during my A-level Psychology and it was so weird.

Maybe your dream is brought on because youare under a lot of pressure/stress? Horrible when they are so vivid!

Nowhere near as bad but I have a bad fear of spiders. One night, I was dreaming that there was a big one on the ceiling above the bed. I actually got out of bed while dreaming, to 'get away from it' 😂

VariationsonaTheme · 30/03/2023 21:29

I’ve had this dream a number of times, no idea what it means but it leaves me feeling guilty even though I know I haven’t done anything!

SoftCoeur · 30/03/2023 22:21

I'm another who's had versions of this dream several times. It's like in the dream I suddenly remember an awful thing I did, usually a murder, that I'd forgotten. Just that horrible feeling of total dread and guilt and terror of being found out.

And then the utter relief and joy when you wake and realise you haven't killed anyone, as a PP said.

PeachPiePrincess · 30/03/2023 22:23

Not quite the same but sometimes I dream I've cheated on my DH and I feel so sick and guilty. I'm sooooo relieved when I wake up. I don't even dream the cheating part (unfortunately 😂) just the subsequent guilt

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 30/03/2023 22:24

I BBC actually have a reoccurring dream that DH and I have killed someone and hidden the body and are on the verge of being caught.
It's bloody horrible Confused

Goingtothebeach · 30/03/2023 22:26

I have dreams like this fairly often.

Usually that I've killed someone and hidden the body. Horrible.

MobyJeff · 30/03/2023 22:31

Wow! I thought it was just me! Yes, it’s that I did something awful years ago, and there’s evidence somewhere, usually a document in a file hidden in an old vault that is now being cleared out. Terrible dread and panic 😱

Edthehorse · 30/03/2023 22:33

I used to have dreams like this regularly. I don't anymore.

No idea what it means but a quick Google would probably tell you

TrishM80 · 30/03/2023 22:52

Not just me then!

Dayleefail · 30/03/2023 23:05

I've had this recurring dream too - body is under concrete, under a shed but now that shed is being demolished. Thought it was just me!

maddening · 30/03/2023 23:12

I was in prison on trumped up charges last night.

I also was forced to cover for murderous elephants a few weeks ago.

I think it is just a dream and think it will fade.

PiccaZ · 30/03/2023 23:15

I’m more worried that I’ve never had a dream like any of these.

I very very very rarely dream, once or twice a year at most and even then it’s a very faded memory of having dreamt something

Minfilia · 30/03/2023 23:18

I’ve had the same dream too, repeatedly over the years.

In my dream I’ve (apparently) killed someone as there is a body in the cellar that I’m trying to cover up before I get found out 🤷‍♀️ I never know who I’ve killed though, and I never actually kill them in the dream. It’s like it’s just there and I’m wondering if it was me who did it or someone else?!

LakeTiticaca · 30/03/2023 23:31

I had a dream a while back that I was on death row. I don't know how I had got there but I remembered being really happy with life and not wanting to die . My execution was scheduled for the following week and I was soooo relieved when I woke up 🥵

taxquestiontime · 30/03/2023 23:35

I have had lots of dreams like this too…maybe it is all the true crime podcast 😬

Tryphenia · 30/03/2023 23:36

I have a recurrent dream where my best friend and I have killed someone (not clear who, and doesn’t seem particularly crucial to the dream) and are burying the body and trying to come up with watertight alibis, and it’s all very humdrum and sort of chore-like. ‘You get the shovels and I’ll erase our footsteps and check we didn’t drop anything.’

JMSA · 30/03/2023 23:37

Committing a crime and covering it up - alongside the wait to be caught - is probably the most stressful situation I can think of.
Are you experiencing stress in your everyday life, OP? Your dream was just an outlet for that.
I sympathise - my dreams are truly batshit!

RockhoppersLovePoppers · 30/03/2023 23:41

Last night I was treated to sleep paralysis stuck in a cycle of repetition.

When I hit proper sleep, it was about hiding a dead body and the lies I had to tell to cover it up. I had to keep asking the questions over and over, can't lie to save myself. Mine are medication related though . Horrible feeling.

Crazyfaisy · 30/03/2023 23:42

I've had similar dreams that have felt very real. For me, I think they were connected to some medication.

WishIWasACavewoman · 30/03/2023 23:45

This is so interesting! I've had these, most memorably having hidden the body of my ex in my parents' loft. Excruciating horror, dread and impending doom.

So many of our dreams seem to feature an ex!

I did look into it and apparently it can be a way for the mind to process feelings of guilt, shame and stress. Certainly relevant in my case.

Lolasgame · 31/03/2023 02:09

You probably murdered someone in your past life and you’re remembering snippets when you’re in an unconscious state ie sleep.
