My youngest sister is 15 weeks pregnant with her PFB and I find myself having to bite my tongue constantly with the nonsense she is spouting. All of a sudden she is a child rearing goddess after read half a parenting book, I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up and that I’ve managed to get my eldest child to 16 years old without her helpful hints. Her comments about how she would never feed her PFB junk food like I was preparing when I was cooking a quick dinner after activities last night nearly saw me commit murder with a spatula.

The meal in question was tacos, quick easy and nutritious I thought but the way she went on and on about junk and frozen/tinned vegetables being highly processed who knows maybe I am wrong and they are seen as junk? So Mumsnet was my quick Monday night dinner as unhealthy as she made out? We don’t get home until just gone 7:30pm on Mondays and I can get this to the table in 20ish minutes and it’s eaten without complaint by all 3 dc.

250g 5% mince beef
1 tin of kidney beans
1 tin of mixed beans
2 tins of tomatoes
frozen sweetcorn
frozen peppers
frozen sweet potato chunks
2 red onions
1 chilli
1 packet of taco seasoning
taco shells
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, radishes, celery, grated carrot and spring onion.

I should add she managed 3 taco shells of the highly processed mix without complaint.

and jalapeños surely ?!?!

YES, deffo jalapenos too!

Newnamenewname109870 · 28/03/2023 14:38

Now is this junk food? You didn’t go and buy it from Taco Bell! Fresh homemade tacos are not junk food. Also even if she thought that she is so rude to say it to your face.

Whatsthefrequencykenny · 28/03/2023 14:39

Very high in sodium but not junk food.

Some one should put it into MFP and get the macros and data on it!

Tacos without cheese or sour cream is unusual to me.

PurpleWisteria1 · 28/03/2023 14:40

No op your dinner was fine.
What I found helped when I had this similar situation was quietly making a note on my phone of all the ‘interesting comments’ Helped me diffuse my frustration and was hilarious to read out to my sister years later (she found it funny too) but I would never have remembered them if I hadn’t written them down.
Secondly if I don’t smile and nod, and felt like sayiing something my phrase was ‘before you have your baby is the one time you will have all the parenting answers. Make the most of it!’

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 28/03/2023 14:40

Maybe you don't want to tell her to f off, but you can say (smiling!) that everyone has these grand ideas when first pregnant and that you can both compare notes when her child is 16 years old and see how she got on Grin

staybyyou · 28/03/2023 14:41

I never fed my imaginary children junk food. My real life children definitely do eat junk food. Ignore her, she will realise she was being an idiot when all her 3yo will eat is fish fingers and beans.

KeepSmiling89 · 28/03/2023 14:42

Suddenly in the mood for tacos!

OP, this is definitely NOT junk food - sounds delicious and nutritious!

Always4Brenner · 28/03/2023 14:42

That dinner is gorgeous I love stuff like this and yes I use frozen veg it’s easy for me as I can’t chop now but I eat well and love my food.

xogossipgirlxo · 28/03/2023 14:42

Ok, we can close the thread now. @Dotjones won 😆

It’s really, really, really not very high in sodium.

How? If the beans are washed? How. Yes all bread has salt but come on now

midlifecrash · 28/03/2023 14:43

Why not make a recording every time she comments, and send it to her as a happy memory in about 6 years

EllieM27 · 28/03/2023 14:44

YABVVU for putting beans and sweet potato in tacos 😂

Your sister is a turd though.

I don't even think they add salt to beans anymore. Nor sugar to sweetcorn. Just boiled in water, i.e. "Ingredients
Red Kidney Beans, Water, Firming Agent (Calcium Chloride)"

ASDA Red Kidney Beans in Water - ASDA Groceries

Absolutely do this!

ah, OP, is there a reason you can't say that? I've said that to friends and relatives when they're being twats.

"oh really? amazing that my two made it to adulthood what with me knowing so little about raising kids" and then i move the conversation on.

And i tell them about the labour poo. In great and gory detail.

Crayfishforyou · 28/03/2023 14:46

Meh.
She will come to a time and point where she will reach for the fish fingers

toomuchlaundry · 28/03/2023 14:52

@Dotjones please tell me you are not for real

Dotjones · 28/03/2023 14:16

Elements of it are definitely junk food

250g 5% mince beef - not junk
1 tin of kidney beans - junk
1 tin of mixed beans - junk
2 tins of tomatoes - junk
frozen sweetcorn - junk
frozen peppers - junk
frozen sweet potato chunks - junk
2 red onions -not junk
1 chilli - junk
1 packet of taco seasoning -junk
taco shells -junk
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag junk, cucumber not junk, cherry tomatoes not junk, peppers not junk, radishes junk, celery junk, grated carrot not junk and spring onion. not junk

The question therefore depends on your definition of "junk" food. Is a burger junk it it has salad in (mix of junk/non-junk elements) or do you consider it partly healthy? Likewise a pizza, is a cheese and tomato pizza junk because there's nothing healthy but a pepperoni one mixed?

At the end of the day, who cares though, if you like it, eat it.

How are most of the things you have listed as junk actually junk?

Brefugee · 28/03/2023 14:52

also i don't thin there is necessarily a choice between "yep, tell her she's baing a pfb twat" and "bide your time - turkey twizzlers will have their day"

OP: you can do both!

Hellybelly84 · 28/03/2023 14:54

Make sure to remind her of this moment when she’s stopping at McDonalds with a hungry toddler 😀 Bite your tongue and let her work it out for herself very soon. That sounds like a lovely meal.

menopause59 · 28/03/2023 14:54

I wouldn't even be cooking mine was probably have Mcdonalds in the car on the way home 😀nothing worse than a pregnant person giving parenting advice, keep it all in mind for when they are up the wall with a new born and just smile

takealettermsjones · 28/03/2023 14:54

I am possibly delirious from lack of sleep but I just laughed for a solid ten minutes at the image of people standing in front of the fridge and chucking them at random yelling "JUNK! NOT JUNK!" So thank you @MeinKraft and @AitchPeeVee

Ah I really fancy a crunchy beef taco from Taco Bell now!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 28/03/2023 14:54

The most perfect parents are the ones who haven't had kids yet.

Keep a journal of all her shite. When she's keeping her precious dc quiet with oven mozzarella sticks and fruit shoots, read them back to her.
