To say you can still look okay at 13 stone?

I'm 13 stone 7... To my horror! I knew I'd put on a lot rapidly in a short space of time. I'm aware this actually makes me obese. And I need to lose weight for my health

I don't think I look huge though. Definitely not. Might say I'm a bit chubby at a push. Face doesn't look too fat

AIBU to say you can actually be obese and not realise because you don't look 'fat'?

I'm 5'3 so not tall

People carry weight very differently, I'm 5.6, 15 stone and size 16 is on the large size. At 13 stone I was a size 12 which I wouldn't class as obese personally.

PrettyMaybug · 25/03/2023 20:02

@OldTinHat

12 stone ? (re your pic at 20.00)

itsabigtree · 25/03/2023 20:02

I'm around the same height. I'm 9 stone. I would look big at anything over ten and a half stone.

I have been bigger in the past but never felt fat. But when I look back at pictures I notice that I definitely was! That's not to say that I wasn't beautiful though, I was fat and pretty GrinGrin

Rebel2 · 25/03/2023 20:02

It's fine. I'm trying to be body neutral, I'm obese but I eat well, exercise regularly (my GP says more than 95% of the people he sees), my BP is good, bloods done every 12 weeks are good, and I do what I can to lose a little weight
Sedentary job, chronic illness and hashimotos make it really hard along with the fact I'm genuinely broad/male build at 5ft 10

I was still in the overweight category age 18 and size 12. Never fitted in a size 10 in my life as my shoulders/boobs won't fit

PrettyMaybug · 25/03/2023 20:03

@outforawalkbitch you look 11.5 to 12 stone. Not 13 and a half.

BelindaMelinda · 25/03/2023 20:03

When I was a 3 stone overweight I still looked good imo. I dressed in flattering clothes and I have plenty of (posed) photos where I don't even look particularly overweight imo, I certainly never had any visible rolls or bulges and I carried the weight 'well' - evenly all over and none on my face. I knew I'd put weight on but I was genuinely shocked when I saw the figure on the scales because I really didn't look that heavy at all.

It was much harder work though, having to put the effort in to dress carefully to flatter a bigger size. Plus health reasons bla bla bla.

It's hard for most of us to notice weight gain or loss as it can creep up gradually.

Short of being a highly muscular athlete then 5ft3 and 13 stone is unlikely to look anything other than overweight. You've acknowledged you need to lose some weight for your health and will hopefully find a way to do it that that suits you and your lifestyle.

This thread will go the same way though:

  • Handfuls of posters claiming they look obese at 8 stone so couldn't imagine thinking 13 is ok. By 9 stone they need to live off 2 grapes and a lettuce leaf to avoid becoming a hellish vision of gluttony.
  • Handfuls of posters who are overweight themselves arguing that BMI is totally inaccurate and therefore an obese BMI should be ignored because people are getting bigger and it's body shaming to suggest otherwise.

I’m almost 9st and live off significantly more than two grapes, always have done. I eat more takeaways than I’d like to admit to and did the same at 8 1/2 stone. Why would you assume everyone at a lower weight has to starve themselves to maintain that weight?

MultipleVeganPies · 25/03/2023 20:04

I honestly think you can look great at any age and any size

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/03/2023 20:05

I’m 13st at almost 5’ 10”, a size 16 and I look fat. Part of this is menopausal weight gain and it is ALL around my middle, I honestly look 6 months pregnant.

JaneFondue · 25/03/2023 20:06

If you are Asian as I am, even a BMI of 23 is a risk for diabetes. That's why weight matters to me even if 11 stone at 5'7 is not overweight. Also genetically predisposed to put weight on where it's most unhealthy.

BeautifulWar · 25/03/2023 20:07

Looking good is completely subjective though, there is no right or wrong answer. Focus on whether you feel good instead.

I think you look great !

For your health it's probably a good idea not to put any more weight on - but I definitely agree with you it's quite possible to look well at that height/weight. Do you feel healthy / unhealthy ? Wondering if you exercise a lot - as being toned up can make you appear a lot more slender. I have a colleague who weighs about a stone more than me but dresses one or two sizes smaller - it's because she does a lot of exercise/ gym whereas I'm unfit and flabby .

Your health is the main thing - but bear in mind that what you can get away with health-wise in your 30s may not be true in another 10, 20 years .

Rebel2 · 25/03/2023 20:08

I'm about 17 stone here yes I know I'm fat, I have eyes

OldTinHat · 25/03/2023 20:08

@PrettyMaybug I'm 16 stone and a size 18 😱 massively overweight at 5'7

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 25/03/2023 20:09

I'm not going to say how tall or heavy I am but I'm an apple with big boobs and significant weight gain looks awful on me- I look like a barrel with no arse and skinny legs. So yes, it very much depends on where you carry your weight

CarryMeOut · 25/03/2023 20:09

Of course you can.
But expect all the women who are seven stone rock up to tell you that it is impossible to be fat and look good.

OldTinHat · 25/03/2023 20:10

@Rebel2 you carry it well, I'm so very envious! You look fab.

Whatthediddlyfeck · 25/03/2023 20:10

I’m 5’7 and currently 12 stone 13 and look and feel fucking fanstastic!

15 months ago I was 27 stone

Blossomtoes · 25/03/2023 19:55

No you’re not.

Yes, I definitely am. I carry all my weight on my belly, hips and thighs. Scrawny upper body. I absolutely do look chubby atm.

QueenCamilla · 25/03/2023 20:13

SecondhandMuck · 25/03/2023 19:19

I hope you're aware that you've just set off on the bat-signal for all the 'we've lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like...' brigade.

"We" as a society haven't lost sight of what normal, healthy weight looks like.
Some of the overweight people have lost the sight and lost the feels though.

I'm 5'3. I would look objectively obese at OP's 13st7.
Can't say whether I'd look subjectively attractive to someone... Not to myself for sure.

StrawberryWater · 25/03/2023 20:14

I look ok at 13/14 stone. I’m 5’7. It all depends on how you carry it.

I currently weigh 18 and feel grim and look it.

WollyWinka · 25/03/2023 20:14

Impossible to say without seeing you BUT I am 5 3" and weigh 47 kilos- about 7 st 5

Can't imagine adding 6 st.

I am NOT thin, just small framed.

lipstickwoman · 25/03/2023 20:14

You can certainly dress well and look ok but you are unhealthily heavy (as you have said) and would find life and dressing a lot easier if you were lighter.

StrawberryWater · 25/03/2023 20:14

Blossomtoes · 25/03/2023 19:55

No you’re not.

It’s all relative, when I was 8.5 stone, 9 stone seemed a bit chubby to me.

Now that I’m 11 stone I would love to be 9 stone.
