AIBU to not want to be the only swimmer?

I booked into swimming at the local swim centre, I go there quite often as it's local but a bit small and grotty. I turned up and changed to find there was no one else booked into my session. I felt super awkward so I got dressed and left again.

AIBU to just bugger off? There are other sessions after mine so it's not like the staff are there just for me but it felt very awkward to be swimming up and down in silence with just a lifeguard watching me.

Yabu, I’d have loved to have a pool to myself

NewShoes · 22/03/2023 17:37

Having the whole pool to myself is my favourite thing personally!!

HeadNorth · 22/03/2023 17:37

I would love it - other swimmers can be annoying, enjoy the peace.

Bayleaf25 · 22/03/2023 17:38

Perfect! No one getting in the way, lovely and peaceful, sounds great!

Bobshhh · 22/03/2023 17:39

I was away recently and the pool was totally empty in the morning, just me and the life guard and it was the dream! I don’t want smelly splashy people in my way

TakeMe2Insanity · 22/03/2023 17:39

Noooo! That’s like the dream of swimming. The pool to yourself is such a luxury!

TrobadoraBeatrice · 22/03/2023 17:39

Wow, that's my dream - having the pool all to myself! I was often the first in the pool when they still did timed sessions coming out of lockdown and loved it. So YABU to just leave!

CountryParsonPetal · 22/03/2023 17:40

I would feel like I'd won the lottery, having the pool to myself would be heaven.

gogohmm · 22/03/2023 17:40

I love an empty pool, I go down early in hotels before the kids get up

TeenDivided · 22/03/2023 17:41

That's called millionaires swimming in my house.

VenusStarr · 22/03/2023 17:42

I'd have loved that.

ShakeYourFeathers · 22/03/2023 17:42

Yabu being the only person in the pooo is one of life's small pleasures. One of my favourite things is when you're the first person in the pool and create ripples in the water

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 22/03/2023 17:42

It would be lovely in a hotel, but a public pool with a personal lifeguard would feel very uncomfortable!

ScoopT · 22/03/2023 17:42

See in a lovely holiday resort in the sun I can see it...in a grotty leisure centre pool with a teenage lifeguard watching me huff and puff up and down for 45 mins...less so!

Wtf, you mad act, that’s the best sort of swim!!

AuntiesWoodenLeg · 22/03/2023 17:42

Are you mad? A pool to yourself is a swimmer's dream! I've had that happen just once, and I didn't for a moment consider what the lifeguard was doing.

I think you need to be a little less self-conscious.

35965a · 22/03/2023 17:43

I love having the pool to myself at the gym. Usually within 15 minutes someone else comes in but the times when I am by myself are great! Lifeguard couldn’t care less I imagine.

User339406 · 22/03/2023 17:43

You got changed then got dressed again without swimming? Surely that's more awkward than doing what you went there for?

The lifeguard was probably dreaming about what he'd have for his tea or what he was going to do at the weekend, not watching you swim.

I was a lifeguard, one of my favourite jobs. If there was only one person in I didn't pay them much attention tbh. You could tell from the sounds of the water if they were still swimming. I would probably take the chance to do some water testing or tidying up round the poolside rather than just sit and look at you.

NoSquirrels · 22/03/2023 17:43

I don’t know if you’re unreasonable but I think you’re unusual - most swimmers (me certainly included) would bloody love it!

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 22/03/2023 17:45

Unless it’s synchronized lessons, swimming is an individual sport. Why would it matter if there are other people in the pool?

Petrarkanian · 22/03/2023 17:47

But that's the dream, no-one else to piss me off.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/03/2023 17:48

Bloody amazing having the pool to myself. Absolute favourite thing. Next best is having a lane to myself.

bloodywhitecat · 22/03/2023 17:49

Back in the dark ages, when I was a young lifeguard, I would far rather have been watching a swimmer than scrubbing the changing rooms or cleaning windows so YABU.

Hellocatshome · 22/03/2023 17:49

I can assure you whilst the lifeguard has to "watch" you to a certain extent they are not watching watching you. They aren't silently judging your stroke or choice of swimming costume. They have seen so many swimmers they really don't give a shit

Hankunamatata · 22/03/2023 17:49

Nope would love it. Waterproof earphones I'd be in heaven
