AIBU to not want to be the only swimmer?

I booked into swimming at the local swim centre, I go there quite often as it's local but a bit small and grotty. I turned up and changed to find there was no one else booked into my session. I felt super awkward so I got dressed and left again.

AIBU to just bugger off? There are other sessions after mine so it's not like the staff are there just for me but it felt very awkward to be swimming up and down in silence with just a lifeguard watching me.

YABU. What a dream!

An empty pool is bliss, and chance to back stroke without being a liability.

I like swimming a range of strokes as it's less tiring, but it can be a pain pacing around other people. I'm also that awkward speed between medium/ fast depending on who else is there. An empty pool means no pressure to match paces.

I’d love it. Are you really self-conscious or something? I think it’s weird to get dressed & go home if you wanted to swim.

YABU to care about what a teenage lifeguard thinks. Most teenagers are fairly self-absorbed and don't really register people over the age of 20 as being real people anyway so they wouldn't have paid any attention to you beyond noticing you as a shape in the water.

WholeHog · 22/03/2023 19:36

Perhaps you could post on a local social media group how delightful it was having the whole pool to yourself at that specific time of day, then you'll probably never have that problem again.

ScoopT · 22/03/2023 19:46

You are wildly overestimating my swimming ability @BogRollBOGOF 😂

I'd love to have the whole pool to myself! I have occasionally had it in the past right at the end of a session, you bet I'm getting my money's worth out of the session 😁😁

Darkstar4855 · 22/03/2023 20:17

OMG I would love that! Nothing worse than having to share a lane…

Augend23 · 22/03/2023 20:21

My favourite thing is the pool to myself. I love it. The lifeguard has to stay there anyway so you may as well enjoy it.

CocoFifi · 22/03/2023 20:27

I would give my right arm to have a pool to myself. A luxury

@itsgettingweird that's the ridiculous thing, last week I moaned that there were too many people there!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

All joking aside I do actually get why despite it having it's obvious advantages why you'd feel uncomfortable being the only swimmer!

TheOGCCL · 22/03/2023 21:09

Wtf this is the aim. I'm always trying to work out the quietest time at out local pool, Friday nights I think!
