To think that the Stephen storyline in Corrie is boring and lacking in credibility?

Have been watching some 2002 “Classic” Coronation St episodes on ITVX (also shown on ITV3). Maureen Lipman’s two week stint as Lillian Spencer has been and gone, and Gail has just married Richard Hillman, with us knowing that he gave Gail a bracelet that belonged to his ex wife and - by implication - he murdered us and he is, in the infamous denouncement, “Norman Bates with a briefcase”.

Anyway, watching a near flawlessly executed soap serial killer storyline develop has got me thinking about the current storyline involving - unbelievably - Gail’s brother Stephen. Is it me or is this a truly dire story? The only way I can see it being redeeemd is if it flips, Stephen gets murdered and there’s either a ‘Who shot JR’ type whodunnit or an I am Spartacus group cover up.

YANBU. I can’t wait for this storyline to be over. He is such a pathetic, snivelling character he is spoiling Corrie for me.

Isseywith3witchycats · 19/03/2023 17:49

Totally agree hes not a great character and this is dragging on again as they always do with a serial killer on soaps

Florenz · 19/03/2023 17:52

Coronation Street is terrible nowadays. I don't know what happened, did all the good writers leave?

mrspinkhat · 19/03/2023 17:54

Definitely agree, Corrie is tedious now, where is any humour? The Max storyline, then the drugs story, then the recent thing with the Bistro, now Daisy being stalked, and the Stephen storyline, dear god it's passed Eastenders for misery. Can we PLEASE get some bloody light relief?

GrisleyR · 19/03/2023 17:55

The comedy value saves it. Throwing stones at the roof box to make it sink amused me for at least 23 seconds 🤣

I somehow get the feeling this is almost realistic, most murderers are blundering along, with no dastardly plan, they just get sucked in to save their own skins.

Trying to get the body filled roof box onto the car, with the assistance of 59% of Coronation Streef still fils me with joy😁

Viviennemary · 19/03/2023 17:56

It's dragging on far far too long. Nobody has noticed the coffee link wit Carla's episodes only one person who seems to be setting himself up as Stephen's next victim. Bit predictable. I agree its dire these days.

GrammarTeacher · 19/03/2023 17:59

Stephen is awful. The actor is rubbish and he has little to work with. I think the stalking plot line is more interesting in terms of the frustrations of dealing with it in the system.

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 19/03/2023 18:02

Stephen makes my skin crawl tbh. Usually look away during his scenes.
Can't wait for Audrey to find out her precious boy is so evil.

Londonnight · 19/03/2023 18:03

I agree. I was hoping it would come to a conclusion at Christmas, but they are still plodding along with this was very unlikely storyline! I also agree that the Stephen character is very boring.

DannyZukosSmile · 19/03/2023 18:05

It's awful. I have been a Corrie fan since the mid 1970s and have never deserted it, but right now, I am feeling like switching off for good. It's not just the fact Stephen is an arsehole, it's the amount of constant 'near misses' he has had. How close he has got to being caught out, but just manages to evade it somehow. Constantly just missing capture and being revealed as the murderous weirdo he is. He must have had about 10 or 12 'near misses' now, and it's tedious and pathetic. His voice is super annoying too. (Not the accent, the voice.)

When he killed Leo's dad, and told Jenny 'he said not to contact him again ever' and she just said 'ok then' that was farcical. As IF she would have done that.

thaisweetchill · 19/03/2023 18:09

I stopped watching corrie purely because of this storyline and that's when he killed Jenny's boyfriend so it's been months! It was too ridiculous for me and his acting is horrendous. Unfortunately it was the tip of the ice berg for me.

Soproudoflionesses · 19/03/2023 18:14

I used to watch it religiously but it became so far fetched and unfunny l quit and never looked back.

snap, i used to watch every episode on catch up every week but not watched since this storyline and also whiney Summer and Billy!

Find the characters really unlikable nowadays.

tregunamekoidestrecorumsatisdee · 19/03/2023 18:21

He is the most irritating character and the whole storyline is ridiculous. Also I think he looks exactly like Homer Simpson.

largeprintagathachristie · 19/03/2023 18:28

Stopped watching because of this, and there was a lot of Summer/Billy/the other Dads storylines which were also complete dross.
someone let me know when it’s safe to come back!

Classic Corrie on the other hand - brilliant.

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/03/2023 18:47

Ill be honest at the minute I am mostly watching for Maureen Lipmans characters snarky lines.

Stephen is fucking awful, and a terrible actor - I've seen him in something else and he managed to ham up and turn to wood 30 seconds of screen time sat in a tent, not sure he even had lines!

Why has NO ONE done a blood test on Carla and listened to her saying this DOESN'T feel like psychosis, that she feels as if she is on something, which shes said at least twice now. She already knows Stephen wants to steal the factory from her and is not inclined to play by the rules.

Also how the hell does she own a factory she can be ousted from so easily?! Who the fuck drew up that bit of paperwork?

Florenz · 19/03/2023 18:48

Coronation Street was always character based and now they've tried to make it plot based with more outlandish storylines. If they aren't careful it'll go the same way as Brookside.

I have also been screaming at the TV for the last couple of weeks....'why have they not done blood tests on Carla?' That's the first thing any GP will do for anything. They can tell and figure out and find out so many things from blood tests.

Also, I agree with a previous poster that Summer is one of the most horrific characters ever. Whiny moany whingey boring annoying. Just kill her off.

But also they're turning Gail into a doddery pathetic weirdo with a wimpy iccle voice. She actually used to be a really quite feisty, and strong, and they've turned her into a timid little wimp.

Also, Mary used to be quirky and likeable and funny, but recently they have turned her into an irritating and ridiculous character.

And don't get me STARTED on bloody Sally and Tim's sex life (or lack of it) story. Grim and gross and boring. Dragged on for about a year.

AND now this daughter of Faye's has popped up with her dad 'Jackson.' I wonder how long it will be before Jackson gets killed in a freak car accident, and Faye is forced to take on MILEY full time, and she comes to live with her. YAWN... borrrring. 🙄

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/03/2023 19:58

Oh I hadn't even thought of that re Miley... you're bang on. Jackson will explode or his head will fall off or he'll be kidnapped by aliens and she will HAVE to take Miley. Yawn.

Also yes, Summer is doing my head in, and Billy, Paul AND Todd alllllllll running around after her like the triumvirate of twatty Disney Dads is beyond irritating also.

And, on that subject, a week or so back,I spotted her a/ coffee and cake in Roys, then b/drinking in the pub then c/milkshake then d/drinking again in the evening - as a diabetic with an eating disorder, this seems excessive in ONE DAY!

Ck25 · 19/03/2023 20:00

nightmare character his got to go the sooner the better smug as he is makes me mute the TV when his on😂

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 19/03/2023 20:11

The Tim and Sally sex life story carried on for ages. It did make me laugh when they talked about Tim's Timpotence. I don't actually watch it these days, but DH does, so I find myself sucked it every now and again, and asking annoying questions.

IMO it started to get a bit ridiculous many years ago, when Spider and co had a protest on the Red Rec, and got Emily Bishop up a tree. Yes, that's how old I am! Grin

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 19/03/2023 20:29

God, yes, and Peter doesn’t seem bothered that Stephen keeps turning up willy-nilly, and can’t make the link between Stephen making drinks and Carla being ill ?? Come on Peter we know you’re not Mastermind material but seriously.

also I had a really vivid sex dream about Stephen the other week and I’m still furious about it!!! Hideous.

Enfys1982 · 19/03/2023 20:37

YANBU. It’s fucking shit. Terrible actor and the storyline is just a rehash of Richard Hillman. Difference being that Corrie was better written and had decent actors back then. It still has decent actors but because the writing is so poor these days they aren’t able to really show how good they are. Alison King who plays Carla is exceptionally good when given decent material for example.

coconotgrove · 19/03/2023 20:44

The producers of Corrie should be ashamed of themselves for what they have done to the show. Stephen is particularly terrible, his voice alone is akin to nails down a blackboard, and is one of the factors I stopped watching.

I only watch classic Corrie on ITV3 now.

tothesea · 19/03/2023 20:46

I stopped watching years ago and believe you me I was a die hard fan. I’d watched Corrie since I was about eight, I remember when Nick was as born. I even went on the studio tour and it was one of the most exciting days of my life! I’ve got a picture of me pulling a pint in The Rovers and my face is exploding with joy!
But I had to stop watching because it just got so bad. I’m sorry to hear it is still really bad because if the writing and acting had improved I would come back!
