To think that the Stephen storyline in Corrie is boring and lacking in credibility?

Have been watching some 2002 “Classic” Coronation St episodes on ITVX (also shown on ITV3). Maureen Lipman’s two week stint as Lillian Spencer has been and gone, and Gail has just married Richard Hillman, with us knowing that he gave Gail a bracelet that belonged to his ex wife and - by implication - he murdered us and he is, in the infamous denouncement, “Norman Bates with a briefcase”.

Anyway, watching a near flawlessly executed soap serial killer storyline develop has got me thinking about the current storyline involving - unbelievably - Gail’s brother Stephen. Is it me or is this a truly dire story? The only way I can see it being redeeemd is if it flips, Stephen gets murdered and there’s either a ‘Who shot JR’ type whodunnit or an I am Spartacus group cover up.

Don't know what looks more wooden, his acting or his teeth Envy <-- not envy

I've always loved Corrie and used to watch it with my Mum/Nan growing up. I have to say I've stopped watching it. Felt such a chore watching the episodes and I was no longer enjoying it. DH used to like watching it with me also, but felt it went down hill with the gangsters tied up in the bistro, Summer offering to be a surrogate, Max being groomed and this ridiculous storyline of Stephen. Feel bad not watching it as my late Mum and Nan were big fans but I'm not enjoying it.

Apparently Stephen will be around until Christmas , or so I've heard
He is a dreadful actor, but as to the storyline, it's no different to others, totally unbelievable and will drag on. Iv these soaps were true to life, they would be dead boring.
The funniest bit is Faye's daughter who has turned up and should be around 7ish and her dad looks 30ish.

Yes, I’m finding the stalking plotline surprisingly effective although I’m worried about how they’ll pull off the forthcoming twist (source: digitalspy)

Stephen is a pain in the arse. Storyline is stupid.

JMSA · 19/03/2023 22:05

Oh, you are so NOT being unreasonable! It's bloody ridiculous how long it's dragging on. Whenever I see anything about Corrie on social media, the character of Stephen/the Stephen situation is SLATED. I don't know how the writers and producers can be so tone deaf!

YANBU. It’s fucking shit. Terrible actor and the storyline is just a rehash of Richard Hillman. Difference being that Corrie was better written and had decent actors back then. It still has decent actors but because the writing is so poor these days they aren’t able to really show how good they are. Alison King who plays Carla is exceptionally good when given decent material for example.

Yes, I’m a huge fan of Carla/Alison King.

Her cameo appearance in Coupling is brilliant.

I don’t know why the directors think we love drug related storylines, I honestly don’t.

The speed with which deceased characters are forgotten about, never to be mentioned again, is ridiculous. Leanne lost a child only just over two years ago and I don’t think he’s been mentioned since because drugs. Drugs drugs drugs. And murder. More drugs.

I also saw from a post on Facebook that a horrible storyline is going to be in store for Daisy, and I really don’t like the similarities between RL and Corrie. It isn’t raising awareness, it’s done badly and is farcical and disrespectful. Oliver’s death was based on Charlie Gard’s; Nina and Seb’s attack on Sophie Lancaster but the real ‘victim’ was apparently one of the main perpetrators; etc.

I stopped watching a few months ago, after watching religiously since I was about 9. I don’t miss it one bit, the writing has become so ridiculous.

Yes - the Daisy storyline is going to take the reported horrific turn next Monday. Really have my doubts about this one.

I might do a thread with a spoiler alert so that it can be discussed: next Monday did you say? (So 27th?)
