Or none of the above ??

Got an opportunity to move to a bigger family home soon - but it's a big decision - north - or south (sarf) of the river ??

Looking for advice from London peeps ..

Islington.

Thanks - I'm beginning to think this is the best call too

Why are these 4 specific (and not very connected) places on your shortlist. It’s all a bit random!

But not Charlton anyway!

RiverRed · 15/03/2023 21:47

Very different prices too with Islington and Greenwich both much more expensive than the other two.

Cyberworrier · 15/03/2023 21:48

Won’t it depend on your budget, job location, proximity to friends/families, school needs etc?

If budget not an issue and you can be anywhere in London, I’d say Islington. So central and yet a nice community and some peaceful beautiful parts.

The only thing Greenwich has over Islington is bigger green spaces on the doorstep- and the river of course. Islington has got greenery (and the canal!) but no huge parks comparable to Greenwich or Blackheath.

Seems strange to suggest Charlton as well as Greenwich- although I imagine a budget would go further there, and likewise Holloway cheaper than Islington?

SunnieShine · 15/03/2023 21:50

Holloway is in Islington.

FunnyFox · 15/03/2023 21:51

I've lived on the Holloway Road, then bought a flat in Islington, then moved to a house in Greenwich and I also once owned a small flat in Charlton. (Also prior to all this lived in Turnpike Lane and Ealing Briadway) so I think I can speak with some insider knowledge.

Without a doubt I'd put Greenwich first - it's pleasant, green for London, fabulous park, near the river, brilliant weekend market, good transport links. Islington is also a great place but I'd say less so for families, terrific for singles, young professionals and/or couples - it's more "urban", more buzzing and more pricey I think (although depends exactly what bit of Islington you go for versus which bit of Greenwich eg east of Greenwich park is more expensive than west....and probably on a par with expensive bits of N1). I thought Charlton was not so good and Holloway similarly seemed to me quite grubby and very inner city - don't want to offend anyone who lives in either place but if you can afford SE3 I'd go for it.

Then again every place has its own plus and minus points, and if you find a good property in a good bit of any of these 4 places you could still be very happy.

But Greenwich, yup, it gets my vote.

PS I got married in the Queens House in the park. Overlooking the naval college. Many happy memories.

I think the OP is comparing 2 places- Holloway in Islington or Charlton in Greenwich. As in the borough of Greenwich not maritime Greenwich.

Blackheath town centre (“village”) is vastly nicer than the centre of Greenwich though, don’t you think? And still close to the park. So maybe Blackheath would be a better choice?

FunnyFox · 15/03/2023 21:58

I'd also just caution that there are some pretty rough parts in N1....it's not all delis and warehouse conversions....

RiverRed · 15/03/2023 22:00

Think you’re right! Well spotted!

Ah ok, I misread - lots of people look at Islington and then a step out towards Holloway or Stoke Newington, and likewise look at Greenwich and then a step out to Charlton or Lewisham...if it's a choice between Charlton and Holloway I'd go Holloway.

Sorry, replying to PP saying OP May have meant Holloway in Islington and Charlton in Greenwich.

Hi just to clarify I mean Holloway or Charlton (they are respectively in Islington and Greenwich) - these are the areas - Hollloway or Charlton

Out of interest - why is Charlton so bad?

Yes that's a good point - there's more of a support network in Holloway than Charlton tbh

FunnyFox · 15/03/2023 22:11

I've just had a quick look at Charlton as, thinking back, there is a villagey bit which has some nice eclectic coffee shops and restaurants...but looking at the map, strikes me that there's been a bit of gerrymandering going on there as that boundary looks decidedly odd to me

I'd still say Holloway would win as it's more central and better transport links...but I don't know about schools etc

To ask Holloway, Islington or Charlton, Greenwich?
FunnyFox · 15/03/2023 22:12

I think if you go to Charlton you will fairly quickly appreciate why Holloway probably pips it

Trinity65 · 15/03/2023 22:23

Parts of Charlton, ie the Village and some roads round it are very nice
Lower Charlton (as it was always called, ie the part nearest the River and the O2) is not nice, at all OP.
Cannot speak for Holloway.

I agree with the poster who said that Blackheath has a lovely village feel and is less busy than touristy West Greenwich/Town Centre. I could never afford to live in either place though born there, but I would choose Blackheath if money would allow.

Trinity65 · 15/03/2023 22:25

I have NO Idea what New Charlton is like or if its just a developers name for lower Charlton

MegaManic · 15/03/2023 22:26

Greenwich

ZolaE · 15/03/2023 22:40

Islington!

dreamingbohemian · 15/03/2023 22:53

Those are 2 very random options!

A lot of Charlton is not amazing but if it's more Westcombe Park or Blackheath Standard those are very nice and green

dreamingbohemian · 15/03/2023 22:54

What is your budget? I'm sure people can suggest more options!

CurlyTop1980 · 16/03/2023 02:14

I was born in Greenwich hospital. Sadly its no longer there... I grew up in Lewisham.
Charlton is pretty rough tbh.
