Or none of the above ??

Got an opportunity to move to a bigger family home soon - but it's a big decision - north - or south (sarf) of the river ??

Looking for advice from London peeps ..

I was born in Greenwich hospital. Sadly its no longer there... I grew up in Lewisham.
Charlton is pretty rough tbh.

Ah thanks I hadn't realised Charlton was rough

What is your budget? I'm sure people can suggest more options!

We're actually looking to rent a council property

I’d go with Holloway. It’s easy to get bus down into Angel/the city/central london and you can easily get to Hampstead Heath.

Thanks yes - this part of London seems a lot more accessible

Holloway, good local amenities and really good transport links.

Holloway Road is scary. I was scared to wander found there in the day, Lots of drug users wandering around.Lots of casual violence. It was the worst part of a London I worked in (and I worked in social care so in some pretty dodgy areas).

They aren’t remotely comparable imo. Why are you picking between Holloway and Charlton?

My partner works near Charlton but we have more of a social network in Holloway

I've lived in both, Charlton has some nice bits ie it's nice to live by the river and you can get to Greenwich, Greenwich Park, the o2, Blackheath, oxleas Woods etc easily. However some parts are v rough. Pubs are rough, no nice cafes etc. You're also very out in the sticks really. If the mainline train isn't running you're kind of stuck.

Holloway has much more going on, better transport links, nicer cafes and pubs, more shops, hampstead heath up the road, you can also walk down the Camden/angel quite easily. I even used to walk into town ie Soho from there but obviously that is a bit further. And also full of minor celebs, I saw Minty from eastenders in the post office a few times haha.

If they were my two choices I would go for Holloway definitely.

Ok with the added info that your partner works in Charlton, I would say Charlton -- that would not be a fun commute for him everyday from Holloway to Charlton, it would be 2-3 tubes, about an hour? Whereas social contacts are not every day. Also you would save a lot of money from him not having to commute.

In general transport out of Charlton is not that bad though, it's a short bus to the Jubilee line in North Greenwich or the DLR in Greenwich. Neither of which are that helpful for Holloway, but to get into central London is not that difficult. It's not just the train.

I don't know much about family friendly stuff in Charlton itself other than the amazing Lido, outdoor heated pool but it's a very quick hop to Greenwich and the park there, which has tonnes of family stuff going on all the time.

It makes sense to be closer to work, especially if you have a family. I’ve not been to Charlton. I used to live in Angel, so near Holloway. Holloway is a bit rough, but the transport is good. Schools aren’t great though if that’s a consideration.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 16/03/2023 11:03

Holloway for me. I live & work in the area & my children both go to school here.
I'm happy with the schools & enjoy living here, I want more space but the convenience of the area puts us off moving!

Greenwich District or St Alphage's ? I was born there when it was still the latter. First DS was born when it was the former in 1991

When was that out of interest? I had quite a few friends live around the Holloway Rd in the 00s/early 2010s including on council estates and we never saw any drama beyond what you'd expect. Definitely no visible violence. (Not disputing your experience at all by the way! I just feel that a lot of areas of London that I used to happily walk around at night now seem uncomfortable to me. Not sure if that's just because I've moved away)

OP regardless Holloway would definitely get my vote too.
