To want longer tops/t-shirts

Weatherwax134 · 15/03/2023 12:12

Granted I'm shopping in the dusty corners of 'big girl' sizes, but is it too much to hope that manufacturers can make t-shirts longer at the same time as making them wider? I don't want a longline top (that ends up being a mini dress), I want a t-shirt that covers the button of my jeans and pouch of my tummy. Any recommendations for where to shop are welcome!

BAM are good for longer length t-shirts. Not sure about size range though…

zaksmum1 · 15/03/2023 12:20

Ugh crop tops everywhere! It really annoys me I know it's the style right now but what about us normal people who arent size 6's and 8's
The amount of time I find lovely tops but then realise it's cropped or just too short to cover anything
Really irritating
Sorry don't have any recommendations x

BashfulClam · 15/03/2023 12:21

Primark has some

2023forme · 15/03/2023 12:24

@Weatherwax134 YANBU! I was just discussing this with DH a couple of weeks ago when I went to buy some new holiday gear. Plenty of bigger size tops and t shirts but very few which covered my muffin top. Nothing against bigger women wearing short/crop tops but as a mid 50s, size 16, I want a looser longer top! I also don't want butt cheeking-showing shorts or a mini skirt - marks and spencer, take note.

I honestly wonder who the designers talk to some times.

mydudero · 15/03/2023 12:27

If shops have a tall range try those. I have a long torso and it drives me mad that I have to wear high waisted jeans with most tops to stop them riding up and showing skin when I sit down, or just to get them to cover the button of my jeans!!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 15/03/2023 12:28

I agree!
I'm only short so longline is too long but normal is too short ( i want to cover the old mum tum pouch 🤣)

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 15/03/2023 12:29

While we're moaning - can I get a massive fuck off for tiered midi-dresses?? I don't know if it's just my particular shape but tiering, and that particular length, makes me look like the bit in Sleeping Beauty where the fairies are trying to make the dress without magic:

I'm not tall but have a long torso. I buy from the tall ranges to get the extra length.

I don't mind some of the tiered dresses but the big statement volume sleeves can go away and die.

Dinneronmybfpillow · 15/03/2023 12:37

I've taken to wearing men's T-shirts and jumpers, always better in length.

redskylight · 15/03/2023 12:47

I agree - this is so annoying (see alsi - arms of tops that come at least to my wrist).

That said, I recently bought a "relaxed fit" top from M&S thinking it looked longer.
It was practically down to my knees and I am 5 foot 8.

herewegoroundthebastardbush · 15/03/2023 12:49

And, and...! Why do so many dresses have bloody great holes in the back now?? Do women not wear bras any more? From the front: perfectly nice sensible dress, could probably wear to work and then slip on some heels and take it down the pub. From the back, like a cross between a stripper's outfit and a macrame project gone wrong. Whyyyy?

familyissues12345 · 15/03/2023 12:50

Have you tried yours clothing? The sell loads of these sort of T-shirts in a variety of colours.

Next do similar, I prefer the quality of them too

gogohmm · 15/03/2023 12:56

Hear hear. Especially running tops. Also an extra couple of inches on short skirts whilst we are at it - adding width isn't enough, our bottoms are bigger tooGrin

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 15/03/2023 12:58

I'm short but I hate crop tops and get my tshirts from the tall ranges. I really miss BHS when I need a tshirt. Dorothy perkins are good.

I haven't ventured out to look at spring/summer clothes yet. Hopefully puffy sleeves, silly frills and the weird random holes have gone away for good!

Erm, I'm a size size, but at 37 and having had twins, I'd still quite like some longer line tops. I don't think size is the issue. And thanks for labelling me 'not normal', much appreciated 🤨

Fluffygreenslippers · 15/03/2023 12:59

I buy mens t shirts for this reason

I agree. Also prefer longer t shirts and tops so I can cover my bum and not worry about camel toe. I'm also sick of seeing lovely looking maxis that on closer inspection have a slit up the side.

SmallGreatThings1 · 15/03/2023 12:59

My problem with the longer t shirts is that they are always so bloody shapeless. I want a longer, fitted top. Not some baggy tent like slouch t shirt that makes me look a dress size bigger 😭

Defo sports tops! I’m short and I find women’s ones way too short. I buy mens ones but would be nice to have a normal round neck t-shirt available rather than one that is cropped, see through, low cut, capped sleeved etc

Omg this drives me mad! I bought a maxi so no one has to see my beagle sized thighs-why is there a crotch high slit?!

Itsagrandoldteam · 15/03/2023 13:04

Try Yours Clothing, they do a longline section with tops and t' shirts.

Weatherwax134 · 15/03/2023 13:27

Ok I feel reassured that it isn't just me 😂I will check out some tall ranges and see if that helps- I'm loving other suggestions here as well, we've decided:

  • Short/crop tops
  • Tiered midi dresses
  • Dresses with weird cut out backs
can all bloody do one!! I'm chucking bat-wing sleeves in there as well

emmathedilemma · 15/03/2023 13:33

I think they do make them longer as well as wider, if you put a size 8 top against a size 14 top, in most places the 14 will be longer. I often buy a size up to get the length of the body and sleeves longer.

Agree all tops and T shirts are utterly shapeless, I’ve got some old t shirts from about 15 years ago that actually were shaped in at the waist, all we get now are either totally shapeless or rectangle monstrosities.

burblish · 15/03/2023 14:02

Uniqlo do some longline tops in their Airism range - really nice fit, too, in that they aren’t clingy but aren’t shapeless/baggy either. Only thing is that they tend to be just plain and not very exciting colours.
