To Not understand the purpose of alcohol free beer/wine/spirits

I am almost as afraid of buying alcohol free beer/wine/spirits mistakenly as I am of putting diesel in my petrol car. Why would anyone buy alcohol free gin? If I dont want booze, I drink orange juice. Dont get it.

Me neither. I don’t understand posts where someone is pregnant and fret about what to drink at a wedding. Just have a soft drink, no one cares 🤨

MamaCanYouBuyMeABanana · 12/03/2023 21:15

Some people like different things to you. Shocking, I know.

canyon2000 · 12/03/2023 21:16

I like the taste of lager but don't drink alcohol so I buy alcohol free lager.

Rebel2 · 12/03/2023 21:16

I like the taste of gin but I don't want alcohol

XenoBitch · 12/03/2023 21:17

YANBU.
I like wine and the buzz it gives me. Alcohol free does not do it for me. And lets face it, no one drinks lager for the taste.

PinkFizz1 · 12/03/2023 21:17

Because everyone is different and not like you?

I am an addict in recovery and let me tell you, the difference it makes to be able to have an AF gin & tonic/wine/nosecco at a wedding reception or a meal out instead of drinking Coke all night like a child MASSIVELY helps with my sobriety. Not for everyone, for some it can be a trigger. But personally I am so glad the AF market is picking up. I couldn’t be without it. Ironically, I’d probably be back drinking again if it didn’t exist. Don’t underestimate how bloody brilliant it is. Especially to us addicts.

Brieandme · 12/03/2023 21:17

Why declare on the internet that you're incapable of thinking about something from another person's point of view?

For someone who has bad associations with drinking, drinking something that resembles alcohol could be distressing and triggering.

For someone who doesn't associate drinking with horrific times, but wants to cut down for any reason, alcohol free drinks can be a pleasant substitute for their regular drink.

Simonjt · 12/03/2023 21:18

Lots of people drink something because they like the taste, rather than to just consume alcohol. I like beer, I have young children so don’t drink a lot of alcohol, so I drink alcohol free or low alcohol beer more than standard alcoholic beer.

4EyesandBigThighs · 12/03/2023 21:18

I don’t when I’m in this country. However the owner of a small family run campsite in France once went out of his way to buy me a bottle of alcohol free wine to enjoy while I was pregnant and on holiday with all of my family. It was absolutely stunning! I can’t remember the name of it, I must ask them at some point but it was so so lovely.. if I ever needed to go alcohol free I would definitely get some of that 😂

ChampagneCommunist · 12/03/2023 21:18

Beer tastes nice. Coca Cola does not. Sometime I have to drive.

Therefore, alcohol free beer is the answer

HTH

CountZacular · 12/03/2023 21:19

Well it’s not different from any other soft drink really. Some will like the taste, some will not. Those who don’t won’t drink it: those who do, will.

I like the taste of lager.

Porridgeislife · 12/03/2023 21:19

Because you’re pregnant
Because you’re trying to get pregnant
Because you’re doing Dry January
Because you’re on antibiotics
Because you have a bad relationship with alcohol
Because you’re showing your face at work drinks but have an early plane to catch
Because you’re training for a sporting event

Soft drink is dull af to drink.

PuttingDownRoots · 12/03/2023 21:20

I like alcohol free beer at bbqs when I'm driving. It seems more sociable
Wine i would replace with nice cordial or lemonade.
We have a range of "mocktail" recipes.

Perfectly said 👏.

SweetSenorita · 12/03/2023 21:21

Well, for a myriad of reasons I'm TT. Sometimes I like to play at being a grown up, ditch the fruit juice, and have a bottle of beer or a glass of wine.

That's it really 🤷

Albiboba · 12/03/2023 21:22

Not everyone is you or feels the same? Surely that’s pretty easy to understand.

Plenty of people enjoy the taste of certain beers it spirits but either chose to cut out alcohol or can’t drink for various medical reasons. An orange juice is hardly a realistic swap for a beer.

InWalksBarberalla · 12/03/2023 21:23

They are drinks, so their purpose is to be drunk. Some people enjoy drinking them instead of water, soft drink, juice, etc at times.
Not that difficult to understand.

ChildminderMum · 12/03/2023 21:24

I like the taste of a gin & tonic over sweet drinks like juice or fizzy pop, but don't always want to drink alcohol.

Maynot · 12/03/2023 21:26

I can't drink alcohol on my medications, but in the summer I love a cider in the garden. Alcohol free allows me to do that. There are plenty of reasons why somebody might want alcohol free drinks: pregnancy, recovery, health issues, medication, being the designated driver, etc.

You clearly aren't the target audience, but that doesn't mean it's pointless.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 12/03/2023 21:27

I like the taste of wine, I dont drink to get drunk but sadly I've never found a decent tasting AF wine.

I do! It’s delicious on a hot day. I like water, tonic water , coffee, wine, and both bitter and lager.
Fruit juice and sodas are disgustingly sweet. Hope that helps.

Katy123g · 12/03/2023 21:29

Yabu to wonder why other people drink these. They just want to.

However yanbu to personally not understand the point of them. I completely agree.

I accidently ordered an alcohol free sauvignon blanc from ocado and didn't realise until the driver was long gone.

Disappointed was an understatement.

It will sit in my wine rack until the school has a tombola.

gogohmm · 12/03/2023 21:30

I personally don't like sweet drinks and non alcoholic drinks tend to be sweet. In addition I can't drink orange juice or other citrus

doadeer · 12/03/2023 21:30

The alcohol free drinks market is massive. There's loads of evidence people are drinking less.

Maybe you don't want an orange juice because that's what you drink at home, you want a seedlip and tonic in a nice glass.

It's not hard to imagine.

Lots of us don't drink.
