To Not understand the purpose of alcohol free beer/wine/spirits

I am almost as afraid of buying alcohol free beer/wine/spirits mistakenly as I am of putting diesel in my petrol car. Why would anyone buy alcohol free gin? If I dont want booze, I drink orange juice. Dont get it.

I agree totally why would you bother??
The same thing goes for fake meat - why would a vegetarian want a fake bacon rasher or fake sausage??? I find that odd too not to mention them tasting disgusting 🤢

gloriousmulch · 13/03/2023 06:10

@MumOf2workOptions Because people
like the taste and texture of meat, but don’t actually want to eat meat, maybe for ethical reasons.
Same with alcohol substitutes- you get the taste (which people like) but not the negative aspects.

During my elder DDs pregnancy I had beer cravings. DH tried buying me AF beer but it wasn't as good 12 years ago!

Fortunately the craving could be satisfied by the smell of beer.

queenatom · 13/03/2023 06:33

We drink a lot of AF beer. I like the taste of beer but don't particularly want to drink alcohol in the middle of the week when I have work and a 15 mo to get up early with so will often have an AF beer on a weekday evening. I also like them when I'm designated driver or if I'm out in the pub for a decent stretch with friends and want to slow down on the amount of alcohol I'm drinking. Sometimes I'll have a soft drink but I don't always fancy one.

I've never managed to find an AF wine that didn't just taste like Shloer, so don't tend to dabble in that, and I drank AF gin on occasion when pregnant just to mix things up but probably wouldn't now (don't drink a lot of spirits anyway).

Mummadeze · 13/03/2023 06:43

For me it has been to feel like I am joining in ‘drinking’ on a night out with friends when I don’t want to drink alcohol because it makes me feel ill and has led to bad situations. People can be weird about going out drinking with people who don’t drink. If I have a no alcohol gin and tonic, they are none the wiser. It also has a bit of a placebo effect, I felt a bit tipsy drinking no alcohol wine with others drinking wine, which was definitely in my head, but fun nevertheless.

Twizbe · 13/03/2023 06:43

I don't drink. I don't drink coke or other fizzy drinks either.

I like water and fizzy water and mostly drink that tbh. When I go out though it's nice to have something a little special. A non alcoholic gin and tonic does just that.

buckingmad · 13/03/2023 06:48

The exact same reason someone dieting or diabetic would buy Coke Zero. They like the taste.

DaisyWaldron · 13/03/2023 06:56

I like the taste of beer, but don't like the sensation of being drunk, and alcohol makes me sleep badly and feel bad the next day even in small amounts. Alcohol free wine is vile, but if there was a decent alcohol free version, I'd choose that over the alcoholic sort.

For me, the alcohol in alcoholic drinks is generally a disadvantage rather than the main appeal.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/03/2023 06:58

What a stupid post. I don't drink and af beer really helps with that. I can go out and feel like I'm having a beer without the hangover or the stupid behaviour.

mildlydispeptic · 13/03/2023 07:01

It's an interesting one. I've been teetotal since last October, and one of my biggest challenges was the behavioural aspect of coming home after a horrible day and pouring a glass of wine or a G&T. Or having a beer with a takeaway curry. I've discovered that being able to have a pretty glass of 0% fizz gives me the same feeling of comfort that alcohol did. Maybe as decades of conditioning wear off, my body will twig that there are tastier things to drink, but it's been a great bridge off the booze. Quite pleased I've now found a reasonable Aperol Spritz alternative for summer.

@mildlydispeptic please could you share your Aperol Spritz alternative? I'd love an alcohol free option!

Oblomov23 · 13/03/2023 07:12

If I could find a nice alcohol free wine for my DJ's if he pleased. Haven't found one yet.

Because everyone is different and not like you?

I am an addict in recovery and let me tell you, the difference it makes to be able to have an AF gin & tonic/wine/nosecco at a wedding reception or a meal out instead of drinking Coke all night like a child MASSIVELY helps with my sobriety. Not for everyone, for some it can be a trigger. But personally I am so glad the AF market is picking up. I couldn’t be without it. Ironically, I’d probably be back drinking again if it didn’t exist. Don’t underestimate how bloody brilliant it is. Especially to us addicts.

@PinkFizz1 good on you. Increasingly coming to the conclusion I don’t like the way I feel after drinking even a little (hangxiety!) but would like to feel, like a grown up and drink something more interesting whilst socialising. So I am trying to go AF more - it’s a good thing. Still not found a decent AF white wine though…

Feelinadequate23 · 13/03/2023 07:17

Most soft drinks are full of sugar. I don’t want to spend a whole afternoon at a BBQ or night out with friends drinking orange juice or coke. My teeth would be rotten, I’d be fat and I’d be on a constant sugar rollercoaster. Not to mention I don’t love the taste.

so if I don’t want to drink alcohol (driving, pregnant, breastfeeding, looking after young DC, big day at work tomorrow) then an AF G&T with a slice of lemon and some ice is the perfect drink.

Bananabreakfast123 · 13/03/2023 07:17

I personally love the taste of gin and alcohol free has been a real treat during this pregnancy when all fresh, fizzy and diluting juice has made me sick. Otherwise I'd have been drinking water the entire time. There's obviously a market for it because there's a reasonable choice. I'll continue to drink it after baby arrives and would definitely recommend to others.

MILLYmo0se · 13/03/2023 07:20

Because it keeps the dopes that nag and nag and nag about ' why you arent drinking' off my back
Because theres a limit to how much Coke I can drink in a night - allergic to orange and most mixers/diet drinks/pepsi give me a headache

rioseco · 13/03/2023 07:30

Why are alcohol drinkers so unhappy and scathing about AF or low alcohol products?
I think low alcohol cider is great.

LeFeu · 13/03/2023 07:35

Because an ice cold lager on a hot day can’t be beaten but sometimes you don’t want to get drunk, for many reasons!
not yet found a decent alcohol free wine but I’m waiting for it. Scavi and ray at Prosecco is getting there!

Exactly the same as 'plant-based' processed 'food' that is created to taste and look like the meat/fish it is supposed to replace.
Who the fuck would eat fish-flavoured tofu or whatever lab-grown micro-protien currently in vogue?

People who are vegetarian for moral reasons; but still enjoy meat?

NameOchangeO1 · 13/03/2023 08:45

I don't drink because it makes me feel terrible for days afterwards (jittery, anxious, not myself). But many soft drinks are just too sweet. Alcohol free options are often much better (not the wine though, that is genuinely awful).

Plumbear2 · 13/03/2023 08:51

Because due to a lifelong illness and meds which require no alcohol I can still have a glass of cider or wine when I'm out . I suggest you read the labels more carefully in future if you want to avoid alcohol free. Clue, it's not all about you 😡

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/03/2023 09:02

I like the taste of beer but alcohol gives me horrendous heartburn - orange juice would be even worse. Non alcoholic drinks don’t cause the same problems. Many soft drinks are too sweet but alcohol free beers isn’t.

YourPastryNeedsLard · 13/03/2023 09:05

I don't like sweet drinks but want something other than water sometimes.

I don't think it's a difficult concept!

KimberleyClark · 13/03/2023 09:10

I tried McGuigan Zero, the red one over the weekend and although taste wise it was no substitute, it didn’t taste too bad and it was quite a nice substitute in terms of having something that looks like wine from a wine glass. The label describes it as a wine based drink rather than as alcohol free wine!
