To have a newfound love for Richard Madeley

Something perturbing has happened. I watched Question Time this week and was bowled over and slightly unsettled to kind of fall in love with Richard Madeley?! He's bloody brilliant... Spot on defending Gary Lineker's free speech but pointing out the stupidity of his comments and how 2023 UK is not 1930's Germany. He tore into Johnson and his family media business, Father prospective Knighthood, brother in Houses of Lords etc. He patiently waited and everytime he did speak he was so insightful. I just want him to come round and cook me a roast dinner, read me a book and explain the good & bad of his top 50 celeb interviews.
AIBU - RM is irritating
YANU- RM deserves the glow of my new found love

Lineker was not saying 2023 was the same as 1930s Nazi Germany. He was saying that the language the Tories are using about immigrants is similar.

Butchyrestingface · 11/03/2023 09:10

YABU. He's clearly been possessed by aliens (for a day).

Anotherturnipforthebooks · 11/03/2023 09:11

I like him too but always thought I was alone in that!

Ilovechees3 · 11/03/2023 09:12

I have always liked RM, he writes well he is insightful and controversial at times, but what he says makes a lot of sense the majority of the time.

evemillbank · 11/03/2023 09:13

He did a good job on QT I agree

LizzieSiddal · 11/03/2023 09:14

He does say sensible things sometimes. But as a PP said he has misinterpreted what GL actually said.

And I’ve read several thread on Twitter from German people who now live in the UK. They have said they have to learn in School about how the Nazis ended up committing such horrific crimes, and they recognises the language this government is using as straight from Germany in the 1930s.

EmbraceTheGrace · 11/03/2023 09:26

Yep, he was spot on

vinoandbrie · 11/03/2023 09:38

I’ve always had a crush on Richard Madeley! 😂🤣

coffeerevelsrule · 11/03/2023 09:44

I thought it was going to be unwatchable when he was on QT but he was nowhere near as bad as I thought he would be, though he did misrepresent what GL had said about the 1930s. However, so did Ken Clarke, who I usually agree with despite his being a Tory.

Pinkdelight3 · 11/03/2023 10:56

I rate him too. It's often the case that people who seem nice on TV are dicks IRL and the people who seem like dicks on TV are actually the nicer ones IRL and I think that applies to Madeley. He can come across as a berk, but is actually a decent guy. Likewise, Phil can seem nicer than Kirsty but those who've met both say it's the reverse IRL (behaviour/treatment of people-wise, not getting into politics).

Bigmirrorssmallrooms · 11/03/2023 10:58

Well hello there Judy, how are you today…😄

DrManhattan · 11/03/2023 11:13

I was disappointed as I was expecting him to go full Alan Partridge and be the expert on everything. He has definitely toned it down.

MadKittenWoman · 11/03/2023 11:20

I used to work backstage on a programme with him many, many years ago and he was pleasant to everyone, unlike…

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/03/2023 11:22

i always liked him on radio 2

Iwantmyoldnameback · 11/03/2023 11:24

I thought he was good too but I fear it's that standards have slipped so far he has become the voice of reason.

Mamamia7962 · 11/03/2023 11:27

This Morning was the best with Richard and Judy.

DrManhattan · 11/03/2023 11:28

@Iwantmyoldnameback I think you are probably right

Lemonyfuckit · 11/03/2023 11:32

I think he misinterpreted GL's comments, which I agree with wholeheartedly, but I do think RM seems like a decent sort.

gogohmm · 11/03/2023 11:52

He's pretty eloquent when talking about current affairs, he was wasted in light entertainment to be honest but he followed the money Grin

RedToothBrush · 11/03/2023 11:53

I don't often watch QT as the guests and audience are all too often extreme loons that make it irritating to watch. It makes me want to hurl things at the TV.

What was refreshing about Richard Madeley this week and in great contrast to the other guests was he was respectful of the other guest and didn't shout at them or talk over them, he was articulate in making a point and didn't reduce things into this nonsense 'you are either with me or against me' black and white bullshit and his general knowledge was actually good rather than being totally one dimensional. Some of what he said I agreed with but some of it I didn't but he was able to construct an actual argument with a point. I greatly admire that. It showed up the other guests enormously.

I wish more people were like Madeley than more typical guests. It would make the show more worthwhile rather than a screeching match.

I think he is often a bit of a bellend but good grief he looked good in comparison to the others.

Ttwinkletoes · 11/03/2023 11:59

The guests I like to hear from are eg heads of businesses, heads of NGOs, maybe senior police or medic.
I could probably do as well as RM on QT - balanced view, listen to other contributions La bla but actually you learn nothing from it - hence I seldom watch.
businesses and industry are where our taxes stem from but we know nothing….

longwayoff · 11/03/2023 12:10

Dont like Linekers comparison? I refer complainants to Daily Mail archives 1933 - 39. Prominent supporter and encourage of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts modelled on Hitler's Brownshirts. See how our own country was doing. You wont be proud.

bluebell34567 · 11/03/2023 12:21

i, too think he is very good.

Precisely this. Nobody is saying that we’re at the same stage as Germany in WW2. Thet are looking at how it started. Madeley should have been more accurate and less dismissive.

maddy68 · 11/03/2023 12:25

He's a dick
