To relocate from the south east up north??

Just to start I have never moved away from where I grew up so this would be huge!! But now after having our landlord decide to sell our home again (5th time in 12 years this has happened to us!) We are seriously considering moving somewhere cheaper. But some things making me wonder whether we should.

We currently live just outside of Brighton so are very used to easy and cheap public transport which is vital as we don't drive.

Our daughters are 14 and 10, so 1 heading into GCSE years and the other just about to start secondary school.

We have a good support network of friends and family here. All the girls friends are here.

However we are both on minimum wage. DH works for a company that would let him change locations. I work in childcare so could find another job in that field (I was looking to change anyway as no longer need term time once dd2 starts secondary and theres no chance of increased hours where i am) so financially we would be significantly better off.

For reference our current rent for a 3 bed is £1500 per month and this is cheap, others in this area are closer to £1800. I was looking at Grimsby and for a similar sized 3 bed it is £515. But that is 5hrs on the train from here!

So has anyone done this and what are the pros and cons?

Oh and this is all quite outing if you know me! 🤣

Hmm, you 'corrected' someone who wasn't wrong, cassiatwenty.

I would never offend a Northern Man (on purpose) Grin

On the basis of this thread, I’d be more worried about northern women!

despite fact that many of my friends from university are live in the north and amongst us… it’s not even a question whether the south is warmer in summer and milder in winter! Hence our spring and summer get together is always at mine.
and our pre Christmas get together is at one of theirs up north and i bring my thermal ski gear with me and they take the piss out of me and the other southerner amongst us for sitting by the radiator like the Michelin man!

I don't think you got my joke in the first place. All good, easy to misunderstand things online when there's no tone and text only 🖐🙂

I got it! It’s a hard joke to do in writing. 😆

When the character was addressed as ‘Bucket’ she would always correct them to ‘Bouquet’.

@Vegrocks, why, what are Northern women like?

On this thread, bloomin scary if you allude to the south being warmer in summer and milder in winter!

And same question back to you but re northern men… given that was your original post?!

MrsNathanDrake · 07/03/2023 10:25

I live in Hove and also know Grimsby very well as I have family there. All I can say is don't do it. There are a number of very good reasons why Grimsby is so cheap, none of them good. I actually lived about halfway between Grimsby and Lincoln for a few years after moving there from the SE and I was utterly miserable. Grimsby is a very long way from anywhere. Lincoln has a lot more to offer and isn't quite as cut off, but its not as cheap.

Confused!

you mentioned northern men and not wanting to offend them.

I said northern women on this basis of this thread

You said what did I mean about northern men. I answered

I asked what did you mean about northern men.

@cassiatwenty , there was no joke. The joke in the sit-com was that Hyacinth's surname was bucket but she said it as Bouquet.
You said that her surname was Bouquet not Bucket.

I don't care if you got offended or not. Your life, not mine. You do seem a bit thick now when you point it out.

Everything ok in the garage hun? How's your detector?

DuchessOfSausage · 07/03/2023 10:48

Troll harder 🙀

caffelattetogo · 07/03/2023 11:05

I would. I'd look at Liverpool, as a PP has suggested. Lots of decent properties, if you go north to Waterloo/Crosby there's a great arty feel. Or go over the water - look at New Brighton - it's very much on the up.

Mumaway · 10/10/2023 21:32

Having grown up in Cheshire/Manchester and then lived as a grown up in Winchester.and Brighton before relocating back to Cheshire, I think you're going to be disappointed. Anywhere you would want to live up here the rent will be at least as much as Brighton, especially if you're not up for living in the sticks with limited public transport. Plus it rains quite a lot.

DuchessOfSausage · 11/10/2023 12:19

Oldish thread but if you are comparing Cheshire to Brighton and your current rent in £1500, you'll probably be paying the same if you want a 3-bed house in somewhere not too rough.

Do not underestimate the weather - the North-West is far wetter than the south coast. Depending on how far inland you are, you might get bad winter weather.
