To relocate from the south east up north??

Just to start I have never moved away from where I grew up so this would be huge!! But now after having our landlord decide to sell our home again (5th time in 12 years this has happened to us!) We are seriously considering moving somewhere cheaper. But some things making me wonder whether we should.

We currently live just outside of Brighton so are very used to easy and cheap public transport which is vital as we don't drive.

Our daughters are 14 and 10, so 1 heading into GCSE years and the other just about to start secondary school.

We have a good support network of friends and family here. All the girls friends are here.

However we are both on minimum wage. DH works for a company that would let him change locations. I work in childcare so could find another job in that field (I was looking to change anyway as no longer need term time once dd2 starts secondary and theres no chance of increased hours where i am) so financially we would be significantly better off.

For reference our current rent for a 3 bed is £1500 per month and this is cheap, others in this area are closer to £1800. I was looking at Grimsby and for a similar sized 3 bed it is £515. But that is 5hrs on the train from here!

So has anyone done this and what are the pros and cons?

Oh and this is all quite outing if you know me! 🤣

I really don’t understand all the weather comments. I have lived in the south and the north and it is really not that big a difference- today I am sitting in my house in Yorkshire and it is 6 degrees. The temperature in London and Brighton is also 6 degrees.
I have numerous relatives on the south coast and the temperature is often higher here than there. So it’s just silly to let the weather dictate this decision.

It’s not just about the temperature though. Lots more sunshine hours and less rainfall makes a huge difference to lots of us. Look at the links I posted up thread!!

Beetlewings · 06/03/2023 11:12

A 3 bed for £515 in Grimsby? Ask yourself if that sounds nice!
Rents here in the northwest are on a par with your current rent. And moving teenaged daughters who are used to Brighton, up north? 🫣

vanillamint · 06/03/2023 13:18

OP. Look at helptohomebuy3 there are 3/4 bed houses rent to buy going. In new haven x

Please don't call me silly.

Yes it's 6 degrees here as well but overall its much warmer here usually, this is a very cold snap for my area.
I was so cold it was at times painful and it was miserable and it really affected my MH

People feel the cold differently, here I'm so much happier, that's not silly, its doing what's right for me.

So I'm from the South East of England (a town near Brighton) and now live in Yorkshire. Out of curiosity I just checked the average temperatures of my home town in Sussex and my home town in Yorkshire. Guess what? The Yorkshire town had warmer average temperatures for every month I checked!! Must admit I'm a bit surprised myself - not because Ive noticed a difference in temperatures but because southerners always tell you how cold Yorkshire is.
I also checked the average annual rainfall - again my town in Yorkshire got LESS rain per year than my town in Sussex. Again, southerners always tell me how rainy Yorkshire must be.
The town in Sussex gets slightly more sunshine hours per year but that's it.
I'm never going to listen to Southerners telling me how cold and wet it is in Yorkshire again!

Look at Cheshire, Lancashire and greater Manchester, all close to Liverpool and Manchester, plus the Lakes and Peak districts.

minimum wage jobs wont get you a huge amount in Chesire.

Erm... We have longer evenings in the summer up north! And shorter evenings in the winter.

I think pp was saying that.
I don't want longer evenings .

My bastard hens stay up all hours as it is!😂

Lcb123 · 06/03/2023 14:56

Personally I’d look at some cheaper areas but close by. I think life’s a bit short to uproot to an area you don’t know, away from friends and family, for cheaper rent. Especially with an 14 year old that quite disruptive. Do you have any option to increase earnings now your kids are older?
And I live in Sussex. We are resigned to the prices as near family and friends.

Goldenbear · 06/03/2023 14:56

The southeast has hotter summers and spring arrives earlier as there is a greater amount of solar heat received, the south east chalk landscape absorbs the heat making it warmer as well as obviously being nearer to continental Europe and the equator. You can start to sit on the Downs due to warmth from April on some good days and it is really bright. Spring is beautiful in Sussex. I've been to the Lake District in the Spring, it was freezing and obviously wet and my Mum lives in Shropshire and in the Easter holiday it is always still very Wintery.

Goldenbear · 06/03/2023 14:56

Especially if you are on the South coast.

I'm not sure why posters are arguing over basic geographical facts of the UK. I am really worried about the extreme heat from Climate change in the south east, hell when you commute to central London!

😂 as long as you don’t allude to the fact that the sound tend to have milder winters and warmer summers

then… no so friendly!

Ginmonkeyagain · 06/03/2023 15:13

People are getting climate and weather mixed up ....... as ever.

The SE of England has, over all, a warmer and drier cliamte than the rest of the UK. That doesn't mean there won't be days, or even periods of time, when it is colder or wetter than other places in the UK.

snowspider · 06/03/2023 15:13

An area in Greater Manchester like Hyde/Gee Cross would be ok transport wise and lots going on in Manchester. Plenty of opportunities for career development and education, evening classes etc and not far for country side.

Hi op, have you thought about renting a two bedroom property and having your girls share. In a year you will be bringing in more money working full time and in two years your eldest will be able to get a part time job for stuff she wants. Is living in a nice two bed in the area you want a sacrifice worth making. In your position I would be asking the girls to share a room for a couple of years.

The girls did share a room until a year ago when we moved in here. It was really impacting their relationship so i wouldn't put them back in together unless absolutely necessary. But it is something we have considered.

But a decent sized 2 bed isn't much cheaper per month than a small 3 bed around here. We rented 1 massive 2 bed, if I can find one like that again I would absolutely do it. But most 2 beds I've seen are tiny.

@SallyWD I’m not surprised re temp but am re rainfall. I’m from West Yorks and felt it rained a lot (not there now and always notice it rains so much less here - I’m not in South England ). I always notice it’s so rainy whenever I go back too. North East and East Yorks are drier though apparently.

@cassiatwenty , she was Hyacinth Bucket but she said it as Hyacinth Bouquet

Yes thank you @DuchessOfSausage I tried to spell it the way she'd like people to remember her as Bouquet
