To expect delivery drivers to at least take their helmets off?!

Last week I went for a Chinese with family. We were there for a couple of hours. In that time, there was a steady flow of delivery drivers coming in. Small restaurant.

Last night, I went to McD's (I know, I know). Again, constant flow of motorcyclists in full gear, one of them practically barged me out of the way.

I get that these drivers are making a living and I applaud that. Just wish they would take their helmets off at least.

Aibu?

For what purpose? They’re on a quick turnaround time to get food delivered. You want them to wrangle both the helmet and the food bag? Best stick to restaurants that’s don’t subscribe to food deliveries

OntarioBagnet · 05/03/2023 08:28

Where are they supposed to put their helmets? They can’t carry them as their hands are full of food. They can’t leave them outside as it’ll be stolen. How does it affect you exactly? What a strange thing to think.

FizzyFucker · 05/03/2023 08:29

Yabvu, have you ever had a job that requires wearing a helmet? I'll guess no, it's a massive pain to have to continually remove it, and honestly it has NO impact on you whatsoever so I suggest you unclench.

FlounderingFruitcake · 05/03/2023 08:30

They want a quick turnaround. They are already carrying a delivery bag and need the other hand free to put the food in it. If one ‘practically barged’ you (whatever that means) then that has nothing to do with the helmet.

MaryKateDanaher · 05/03/2023 08:30

Can I ask why it matters to you? Is it a politeness thing (like taking one's hat off) or do you feel threatened by it?

Soubriquet · 05/03/2023 08:30

They don’t have time to and honestly what business is it of yours?

PhotoDad · 05/03/2023 08:30

Putting a helmet on/off is trickier than you'd expect and requires two hands. It's even fiddlier if you wear spectacles!

Anewuser · 05/03/2023 08:32

You’ve clearly never worn a helmet.

daisypond · 05/03/2023 08:32

Why’d you think you should take their helmets off? They’re at work. Helmets are part of their work equipment. They are on tight deadlines.

R0ckets · 05/03/2023 08:33

Where are they meant to put their helmets when carrying the food, what a bloody bonkers thing to fixate on. They have a quick turn around between collecting and leaving so it's a waste of time removing the helmet for the 2 minutes they are off the bike.

Also how shit was the company at the Chinese meal that you were more interested in watching the steady flow of delivery drivers. Hmm

Good question.

When I was there last night where were 6 drivers waiting at the til (where I was barged out of the way) and another 2 or 3 sat at the tables. I did feel intimidated.

As for other posters saying it's a quick turnaround; I get that.

I've never thought about the helmet but this constant stream of delivery drivers when you're trying to eat a nice meal seems to be a new thing, and I find it very off putting.

The company at the Chinese was great, thanks. We were just annoyed by the constant stream of people in full leathers coming in and out, and squeezing past the tables.

But as someone pointed out, we will choose a different restaurant next time.

For what reason do you find that intimidating?

Because one of them barged me out of the way, for a start.

And a helmet would make a difference to that?

I think there definitely needs to be a new system.

That is annoying. I’d expect a half decent sit down restaurant to ask delivery drivers to wait outside or use a separate entrance for picking up. Round here they all have signs in the windows requesting that drivers don’t go in. I’d definitely choose somewhere else next time.

Feeling intimidated by Deliveroo at a McDonald’s is daft though.

Don't read it then 🤣

I don't necessarily agree with the OPs point but eating with 2 or 3 tables of grumpy men playing on their phones in an actual restaurant isn't a great atmosphere. I don't care in McDonald's or wherever.

(I have no solution, I don't think they should sit outside in the cold, it's just an observation)

willingtolearn · 05/03/2023 08:41

@Haraebo They're Mandolorians. They cannot remove their helmets in the presence of others.

GoodChat · 05/03/2023 08:42

I think the system or layout at the Chinese is the problem. You're being a bit daft about maccies though.

I don't object to the helmets but many restaurants haven't got a proper system for dealing with the rise in delivery orders, and that does annoy me. The door constantly opening, crowds of drivers clogging up the entrance and their bikes constantly filling the free 20 mins parking spaces so nobody else can ever park there. My town centre has recently introduced a separate delivery bike parking zone, which I think is a step forward.
