To expect delivery drivers to at least take their helmets off?!

Last week I went for a Chinese with family. We were there for a couple of hours. In that time, there was a steady flow of delivery drivers coming in. Small restaurant.

Last night, I went to McD's (I know, I know). Again, constant flow of motorcyclists in full gear, one of them practically barged me out of the way.

I get that these drivers are making a living and I applaud that. Just wish they would take their helmets off at least.

Aibu?

The company at the Chinese was great, thanks. We were just annoyed by the constant stream of people in full leathers coming in and out, and squeezing past the tables.

Ubless they actually barged into the table you were sitting at I really couldn't get annoyed to be honest.

The restaurant is trying to make money and if people want to order food then what alternative is there for the delivery drivers. Even if they waited outside a steady stream of staff members would have to squeeze past the tables to take the orders to them.

Vallmo47 · 05/03/2023 08:45

I think if you saw the tight schedule these drivers are on and experienced the complaints they do about cold food (how is terrible traffic their fault?) and thought about how they’d actually manage to carry the food as well as juggle their (heavy) helmet, you might change your mind on the OP. Having said that, I’ve noticed myself that some of them do barge through like they own the joint, they take up large areas of the restaurant and get their food before me (even when I’ve waited very patiently). So I’m not keen on the system, but the helmets are definitely not the problem.

mynameiscalypso · 05/03/2023 08:46

I wouldn't be bothered by the helmets but it is annoying to have a constant stream of delivery drivers especially in small restaurants and when it means that they don't end up having the capacity to serve both the diners in the restaurant and the orders they're getting.

Fairislefandango · 05/03/2023 08:47

Why would removing a helmet make a difference to one barging into you? Did he headbutt you with his helmet? It wouldn't make a difference to the space available and them squeezing between the tables either.

I get that it could be slightly irritating having a constant stream of delivery drivers going in and out, especially if you're sitting near the door. But I can't see any reason whatsoever why you'd want drivers to take their helmets off.

OntarioBagnet · 05/03/2023 08:48

I can see being annoyed by a constant stream of people squeezing by in a restaurant would be annoying but taking helmets off would make no difference for that. At McDonald’s I wouldn’t care because there’s a constant stream of people anyway.

torquewench · 05/03/2023 08:50

Is it just the helmets that bother you? Not their clothing, which will be covered in road grime/splattered bugs?

User18695438 · 05/03/2023 08:50

If someone was going to barge into you, taking the helmet off won't stop them doing that

User18695438 · 05/03/2023 08:51

I would probably choose not to sit in the same area as people coming in and out similar to I don't like to sit on the toilet route.

MintJulia · 05/03/2023 08:52

OP, as an ex-motorcyclist, kindly, yes, YABU.

Taking off gloves, then unbuckling crash helmet, then having to put them all back on again is a pain, and wastes time.

The problem is the restaurant needs to arrange their collection point better, not that people earning a living are wearing legally-required safety gear.

Haraebo · 05/03/2023 08:38

I think there definitely needs to be a new system.

@Haraebo get a delivery?

mcD drive through.

Haraebo · 05/03/2023 08:39

Don't read it then 🤣

Touché! 🙂

MsJD · 05/03/2023 09:08

There have been reports of delivery riders renting their bikes/jobs to others. They are self employed and their contracts allow substitution. So some riders might not want to be recognised.

@Vallmo47

of course they get their food before you, it's been ordered before yours!

unless you think restaurants/takeaways should just hand you someone else's order?

i need more coffee to deal with this level if 🙄🙄🤦🏻‍♀️

Donnashair · 05/03/2023 09:10

Surely the issue is that they were rude and barging past people. With or without the helmet that’s rude and shouldn’t happen.

I genuinely don’t get, how delivery drivers are so distracting though. I can’t imagine that impacting wether I ate someone or not.

RichardHeed · 05/03/2023 09:15

Maybe you should feed that back to the Chinese and tell them to stop letting the plebs in then 🙄

willingtolearn · 05/03/2023 08:41

@Haraebo They're Mandolorians. They cannot remove their helmets in the presence of others.

This is the Way.

JustFrustrated · 05/03/2023 09:21

Whilst I don't agree with the point about helmets, I understand the wider point.

It's something DH and I have discussed before. Going to MacDonalds for a quick lunch on a week day now, isn't possible at either of the sites near us. You wait a good 20/30 minutes for "fast food" and the deliveroo/just eat drivers sit on all the tables.

For places like McDs why don't they set up a seperate "delivery only" place on an industrial estate or something?

In other places, they need a better system. Collection at back door/collection point set up (like Costa has?) What is currently happening, isn't working.

@Donnashair pretty sure cannibalism is illegal (in the U.K. anyway)

What was that other thread about being terribly British Hmm

To expect delivery drivers to at least take their helmets off?!
fajitaaaa · 05/03/2023 09:26

How would taking their helmet off help?

If it were a bank or a shop fair enough

WandaWonder · 05/03/2023 09:32

Haraebo · 05/03/2023 08:37

Because one of them barged me out of the way, for a start.

Their helmet make them do it?

Emptycrackedcup · 05/03/2023 09:48

Why?
