My children love Heinz ketchup and it was costing an absolute fortune so decided to look for cheaper alternatives. I had a look on tesco and discovered Hellmann’s do ketchup.it was £1.50 a bottle, whereas similar size Heinz was about £3.30. I bought one….IT IS BRILLIANT! And my children one of which is Asd and very strict with what he’ll eat haven’t even noticed the change. It’s been on clubcard at £1 recently too so I stockpiled 3 extra. Just thought you should know 😊

I buy the Aldi stuff. Same with mayonnaise. The Lidl equivalents are horrible though so I’d avoid those.

Thank you. From another thread I'm going to try branston baked beans. Now hellmans ketchup Smile

My late OH used to like the Branston baked beans but he added a small splash of Worcester sauce too.

Annoyingwurringnoise · 03/03/2023 14:02

Branston beans are good, but Aldi and Lidl beans are just as good. Aldi beans are my favourite.

teapotfullofsquash · 03/03/2023 14:12

We use Asda own because Heinz price is just ridiculous. Same as asda own baked beans.
If anyone could point me in a cheaper direction for a nandos chilli jam alternative I'd be very grateful 😊😂

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 03/03/2023 14:22

I used to buy a Colman's ketchup from pound shops - it was lovely but disappeared off the shelves, never to be seen again! So much nicer than Heinz.

LadyDanburysHat · 03/03/2023 14:26

I'll have to try some of these other brands of ketchup. I got the Tesco one, not Stockwell. DS2 said it tastes spicy and won't eat it. Wasn't the bottle either as it is always decanted. I must try some others. Heinz is crazy expensive.

Plumbear2 · 03/03/2023 14:29

Asda just essentials is far nicer than the normal Asda one. Cheaper too.

ifonly4 · 03/03/2023 14:31

Yes, it's certainly worth looking at other brands. When I met DH he commented that he only really liked Heinz, to find it was always good old Tescos when he came to mine. I can still remember him saying he wanted to take back what he said, as Tescos was equally as nice.

Daisybee6 · 03/03/2023 14:44

I thought your title suggested the government were banning it or something 😄 slight panic

CarbsAreNotMyFriend · 03/03/2023 14:57

Aldi ketchup is even cheaper and delish

Aldi ketchup is the best! I used to like Sainsbury's own, it was cinnamon-ey. Then they changed it.

I agree, my DS only ever wanted Heinz, costing far too much, tried Aldi they couldn’t tell the difference.

Plumbear2 · 03/03/2023 15:15

What's Aldi chicken gravy like? The brand d is now £5 😡

Vates · 03/03/2023 15:23

Best ketchup I've had was M and S ketchup but a lot of the times I can't walk to buy it. I am an avid ketchup fan but not too fussy. Apart from when I tried Sainsbury's basic (long time ago though so might have changed) and it tasted like perfume to me! Bought a bottle of Asda own brand today and lovely.

One grocery item I have failed to down brand is Green pesto. It has to be Sacla or nothing. Tried many alternatives and they all tasted awful (Asda brands, tesco and Sainsbury's). Sacla is so expensive so I just don't buy it often. It is a treat.

Rocketsmocket · 03/03/2023 15:58

So happy with this thread. We’ve always had Heinz here due to other brands causing skin flare ups on small dc, but we’re now aghast at the price.

We’re a neurodiverse household so ketchup is practically a food group here & we hadn’t found one suitable. Latest try was Tesco own (not Stockwell) which didn’t go down well. I now have a long list of different ones to try.

i’ve heard good things about coops own ketchup as well.

Is it this one?

DH hates the M&S one, he says it's spicy, I like it though, I am going to try the Hellmans though, thanks OP, I usually buy Waitose essentials but it isn't always in stock.

endoftheworldniteclub · 03/03/2023 16:04

I was meant to ask @SchoolTripDrama ^^

RubiesandRose · 03/03/2023 16:10

Throwing another brand into the mix, we love Stokes ketchup at £2.80, not the cheapest but cheaper than Heinz and really tomatoey!

Lilbunnyfufu · 03/03/2023 16:15

There's no fooling my 5 year old we've tried most ketchups and he knows if it's not Heinz. I've even tried filling the Heinz bottle with other brands and it didn't work. He smells his food before he will eat it and no other ketchup smells like Heinz.

Stokes is very good, but it is on offer at that price at the moment. It is normally about £3.60 in sainsburys, usually.

RubiesandRose · 03/03/2023 16:31

@LadyKenya I didn't realise that was an offer price!! We better stock up quickly then!

Whoopsmahoot · 03/03/2023 16:53

Branson beans are not as sweet or as watery as Heinz. Taste much better.

Heyjoewhatsup · 03/03/2023 17:03

Worth trying…. But everytime I’ve tried alternative ketchups they always pale in comparison. But I agree Heinz is ridiculously expensive now, soon they will have few customers left!

I’m reminded of that Mad Men episode where Don creates an Ad which plays on their superiority …. Some pictures of chips and burgers with the tagline “Pass the Heinz”.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 03/03/2023 17:12

Just added hellmans to our shop 🤞

GordanoBenito · 03/03/2023 18:49

Conversely, Heinz mayo is soooo much nicer than Hellmans - it's like they're each known for the wrong condiment!
