Our meal said 15m prep and 50m total cooking time. 1.5 hrs later I’m just about ready to dish up….

We had a Gusto. It took about 5 mins longer than it said - probably about 20 mins all in

Floofydawg · 01/03/2023 19:00

Chucked a load of sausages, veg & a tin of tomatoes in the slow cooker about 8 hours ago. Took me all of 10 minutes and was delicious.

feelinglikeanewparent · 01/03/2023 19:10

Made a cake today. Recipe said 45 mins. Took me at least twice that

TomatoSandwiches · 01/03/2023 19:12

A baked seasoned chicken thighs and garlic rice recipe all in one job 50 mins cooking time which it was and only about 10 mins prep before hand.
Not bad imo.

BCBird · 01/03/2023 19:14

My oven rubbish. Takes double the time because I have to cook.on a lower than suggested heat. I won't buy cheap next time🙄

Maybebabyno2 · 01/03/2023 19:16

gogohmm · 01/03/2023 19:18

BingoBonus · 01/03/2023 19:21

We had spag bol, batched cooked the sauce last week so only had to defrost that and boil some pasta. Easy meal.

This was last night but recipe said 15 mins prep and 2 and 1/2 hours cook. Took 15 minutes prep and 1 and 1/4 hours to cook. Cheated though - it was a beef and prune tagine and I used an instant pot.

seratoninmoonbeams · 01/03/2023 19:55

Simply Cook. It's just the herbs and spices or paste, the ingredients list and the method and they are all delicious and simple. Take about twenty minutes most of them and healthy too. Fabulous.

WTF475878237NC · 01/03/2023 19:57

So I have calculated I almost always take 3x the recipe instructions for the prep time. Usually a bit less for the cooking time as have a good oven. So I'm with you!

GoAheadDarling · 01/03/2023 19:58

Recipe said 30 minutes in oven but it just wasn't crispy enough to my liking so it ended up taking 45 mins. I think my oven is working fine.

Theraffarian · 01/03/2023 20:10

20 mins recipe time 30 mins cook, but it was an gousto one that I’d re bought the ingredients for , so nothing was measured out etc .

rambunctiousrapscallion · 01/03/2023 20:10

This is so funny this came up. Me and the OH have just started the Jamie 30min meal challenge. We race to see if we can actually do it in the time (because we're just that cool). You get out all ingredients but dont weigh them, boil the kettle, preheat oven & saucepans etc as it says to do in the book. This takes about 15mins but doesnt count in the time limit.

We picked a particularly simple one and it took 2 decent home cooks 37mins together to get it on the table and we were racing lol. We are going to keep going until we beat the 30mins.

So 2 people, a 30min meal from nothing to table in a total of 52mins.

Pizza in the airfryer - 8 mins versus 20 minutes in the oven 🤣

NCagain23 · 01/03/2023 20:12

5 mins to microwave my carbonara ready meal 😀 exactly as it said on the packet so I'm winning tonight 😂

How do you fit a pizza in an airfryer?

How do you fit a pizza in an airfryer?

It was the smaller baguette type ones you get in Aldi.

Isheabastard · 01/03/2023 20:36

I always enter a time warp when I start cooking in the kitchen. Time seems to go so terribly slow.

I once timed myself making Salad Nicoise. It took me a whole fucking hour!

Fifthtimelucky · 01/03/2023 21:34

I didn't use a recipe (very rarely do unless it's a cake) so it wasn't an issue, but it took about 20 minutes, which is what i expected.

Ndd135632 · 01/03/2023 21:37

Melanzane parmigiana 😇. 30 mins prep. 30 mins in oven. The kids love it.

Charles11 · 01/03/2023 21:39

I put some spaghetti to cook.
Then chopped and fried garlic in olive oil, added chilli flakes, herbs, salmon, seasoning, spinach, lemon juice , some cream cheese then added the spaghetti.
Took about 25 minutes while I listened to an audiobook.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 01/03/2023 21:39

I tweaked the recipe (it was an Ottolenghi one) by doing two parts in parallel to speed it up a bit. The recipe didn’t give a time though, and I tend to disregard them if they do. Particularly for Jamie Oliver ones - it’s a particular bugbear that those 15/30 minute recipes are nothing of the sort once you take the prep time into consideration.

amberedover · 01/03/2023 21:45

I no longer even read the time given for prep .It always takes me sooo much longer .
The prep times might be accurate I suppose if you had a sous chef who had got all the ingredients out ,weighed and prepped them ,put them in little bowls and that you took it from there .
