To ask for the hive mind's help identifying an 80s/90s film about twin brothers...

I have Googled in vain for this film, and I am hoping someone on here might remember it.

Definite facts:

The storyline involves a woman whose husband's twin brother is a criminal/killer. He takes her husband's place, but the audience only realises close to the end, when the man you think is the evil twin has been knocked out or arrested or incapacitated in some way. It's a really creepy moment.

It's not 'Dead Ringers'.

Hazy facts:

The actor playing the twins looks a bit like Nick Nolte.

It may be an American made-for-TV type film.

I think it must be 80s or 90s, but it could even have been late 70s. I think I saw it in the 90s and it wasn't modern then.

There might have been a scar involved - there was something that made the woman/the audience suddenly realise that the evil twin had taken the husband's place.

I have remembered it for years and it pops up and niggles me from time to time, so I would be really grateful if someone could name it!

Maybe look at movies here

thatsn0tmyname · 21/02/2023 22:29

I think it was Shattered.

pauline987 · 21/02/2023 22:31

Is it Raising Cain?

They aren't actually twins in this one. but one of his alter ego personalities is an evil twin and it sounds very similar

Cismyfatarse · 21/02/2023 22:33

Face Off? Not twins but Nicholas Cage and John Travolta switch places.

Kittensat36 · 21/02/2023 22:33

Did the good twin identify himself by tugging his earlobe?

Cismyfatarse · 21/02/2023 22:33

Face Off? Not twins but Nicholas Cage and John Travolta switch places.

I was going to say this too

NCGrandParent · 21/02/2023 22:36

Face Off is nowhere near the description!

Galadriel90 · 21/02/2023 22:37

Not sommersby? With Richard Gere and Jodie Foster.

frenchnoodle · 21/02/2023 22:46

Shattered is a good guess, it's not twins though it's "plastic surgery" after a car accident.

It's such a stupid premises and makes no sense but it's a guilty pleasure move of mine.... You also get Bob Hoskins chewing the scenery in a very Danny Devito type role.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 21/02/2023 22:47

I don't think there are twins in Somersby, it's someone impersonating a man who has died?

PatriciaHolm · 21/02/2023 22:48

Echo?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/02/2023 22:54

Oh my gosh, Somersby is a blast from the past! I was a bit obsessed with that film for a short time but completely forgot about it!

MissFlitworth · 21/02/2023 22:58

James Spader was in a twin movie in the 80s, but I believe that they were victims rather than killers if I remember correctly?

DelphiniumBlue123 · 21/02/2023 22:59

The Krays?

SirVixofVixHall · 21/02/2023 23:02

It’s the Scapegoat .

SirVixofVixHall · 21/02/2023 23:03

Or maybe not, as that isn’t that old. Matthew Rhys plays the twins, really good anyway.

NCGrandParent · 21/02/2023 23:04

@PatriciaHolm 's suggestion looks most likely

JeanMarie · 21/02/2023 23:05

@SirVixofVixHall there is a 1959 version. 😁

Cupcakequeen75 · 21/02/2023 23:06

Sounds like Shattered to me.
Good film and remember the bit where he finds "his" dead body.

Iris1976 · 21/02/2023 23:09

Reddit had a very similar thread come up from last year, their suggestion was mr.murder but that was 1998,the only actor that comes to mind for me close to nick nolte is Gary busy but can't find a film of his with that description.

Iris1976 · 21/02/2023 23:09

Busey even.

Iris1976 · 21/02/2023 23:10

In shattered though the wife knew all along.

Coldsteadyrain · 21/02/2023 23:12

Equinox starring Matthew Modine & Lara Flynn Boyle?

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equinox_(1992_film)

Doesn’t really fit, apart from twins and Matthew Modine looks a bit Nick Nolte-ish in the poster!

gazpachosoupday · 21/02/2023 23:13

I am going to throw The Dark Half out there, but I am not confident

JeanMarie · 21/02/2023 23:13

Brotherly Love. 1985, with Judd Hirsch ( from Taxi). His twin has been released from a psychiatric hospital?
