To ask why women (or men) who perform rap music would not, or should not, read or post on MN?

Not a TAAT, just a tiny thing that came up on another thread! Someone asserted that rappers would not be on MN. (Apparently they’d all be on TikTok.)

I was a little surprised to read this. It hadn’t occurred to me that posters here assume some ‘other’ group either excludes themselves or is excluded from MN.

Given how many ‘up and coming’ young women there are in rap music I’d be astonished if a fair proportion wouldn’t find their way here at some point - as mothers, aunts, daughters, friends, cat adopters, online daters, gardeners, Farrow & Ball fiends, wellington boot wearers, holidaymakers.

Am I just deluded? And are there occupations that you think automatically mean one would never come to MN?

(And yes, there’s a serious point about exclusion and stereotyping that I find quite worrying.)

I’m not a rapper Grin.

But I think too many assumptions are made about Mumsnetters. It’s a massive site. Posters are not a homogenous group.

We are not all from ‘naice’ areas.
We are not all middle class.
We aren’t all white.
Some of us aren’t mothers!

Some of really love rap Grin.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 21/02/2023 10:28

It’s also entirely possible to be middle class and from a naice area and not white and interested in many different types of music and performance! Grin

Well i know for a fact Alisha Dixon is on here so they're wrong!

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 22/02/2023 10:37

And we look forward to her Eurovision commentary!

I didn't have her down as a Rap artist - without going down a massive and daft genre rabbit hole - I suspect OP was talking about rappers of the kind my 14 year old DD listens to - I'd be very surprised if they were on here.

@CrkdLttrCrkdLttr Are you sure?

TheSnugglyDuckling · 22/02/2023 10:58

Would love it if it turned out Dr Dre or Ludacris was a MN poster

@Neededanewuserhandle That’s a good point. Different sites have different demographics Smile

Imagine if the likes of Dr Dre and Snoop were inspired by Mumsnet? Grin

But can you explain why you feel that, @Neededanewuserhandle ? I’m not trying to be obtuse but I just don’t see why a (for argument’s sake) woman’s occupation would somehow separate her from all the other aspects of womanhood we celebrate here.

And given that a female UK rap artist is likely to have gone through - I dunno, the Brit School, or a conservatoire, or held down a different job while building a performance career - she would surely have the same mainstream interests and concerns as a teacher, nurse, barrister, archaeologist - all of whom are probably represented amongst MN posters.

Oh everyone knows it’s only middle aged, middle class women that post on Mumsnet 😉😁 that’s what everyone thinks anyway.

I actually think Mumsnet is quite diverse now, certainly more than it used to be and I’ve been around here a LONG time. Nothing surprises me anymore.

LetMeSleepPleasex2 · 22/02/2023 11:27

Playboi Carti is a regular on Baby Names.

Jux · 22/02/2023 11:35

Except at half term and school holidays I imagine the divide is more along the lines of age. I doubt there are any primary age kids here, or younger secondary, but beyond that, no idea. Anyone here could be anyone in rl.

I'm a mother.

AND I really love rap! (In fact I clicked on this thread because I'm listening to it right now.) I'm not a rapper either though Grin

Well it's an assumption but a fair one 🤣

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 22/02/2023 12:08

Frank Ocean, if you're here please make yourself known to me!

There was a funny video quite a while back of grime artists going through AIBU. I can’t remember where I saw it now I can’t easily find it in youtube.

BaronessBomburst · 22/02/2023 12:53

There used to be a 9/ 10 year old on here who had an account and posted. Some posters knew, some didn't. It certainly wasn't obvious based on their comments and SPAG. You really don't know who anyone is.

Nanny0gg · 22/02/2023 13:05

I'm at the much older end of the MN demographic.

I love music but I sound like my father because, I really really don't like or understand rap.

ohfook · 22/02/2023 13:19

Honestly I wouldn't expect anyone young to be on here, so I'd probably make a similar assumption. I imagine anyone up and coming to be on TikTok making cool videos not giving their opinion on a parking debate or boundary issue.

i laughed just thinking about this. Please post the link if you come across it again.

thefamous5 · 22/02/2023 14:47

I'm not a rapper. Although I'm not bad at rapping along.

I'm a 37 year old white mum, married with children.

I listen to rap, hip hop some drill (although it can be VERY misogynistic - but I also appreciate the background of it), speed garage, drum and bass.

I mean, I do love a bit of Whitney Houston and Celine Dion as well, but my Spotify is probably 80% rap/hip hop

There are some AMAZING British female rappers active today e.g. Little Simz, Pagey Caikey, Lady Leshurr, Shaybo...

Rap, for me, is spoken word poetry, street poetry. The above rappers and their peers cover subjects like impossible social media beauty standards, predatory men at work, the challenge of balancing street life with respecting the more conservative culture of your elders, religion, the difficulties in finding a nice guy who's not been addled by online p0rn, female rivalry, politics....

It would be amazing to have some of them on here.
