To ask why women (or men) who perform rap music would not, or should not, read or post on MN?

Not a TAAT, just a tiny thing that came up on another thread! Someone asserted that rappers would not be on MN. (Apparently they’d all be on TikTok.)

I was a little surprised to read this. It hadn’t occurred to me that posters here assume some ‘other’ group either excludes themselves or is excluded from MN.

Given how many ‘up and coming’ young women there are in rap music I’d be astonished if a fair proportion wouldn’t find their way here at some point - as mothers, aunts, daughters, friends, cat adopters, online daters, gardeners, Farrow & Ball fiends, wellington boot wearers, holidaymakers.

Am I just deluded? And are there occupations that you think automatically mean one would never come to MN?

(And yes, there’s a serious point about exclusion and stereotyping that I find quite worrying.)

Another white, middle class, middle aged mum who loves rap here too and have done since the stone age!

Kendrick if you're on here, thank you for your music and you're the GOAT, no question!

cheatingcrackers · 22/02/2023 14:55

This is crazy. I had no idea the existence of dinosaurs was in such dispute.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 22/02/2023 15:33

The above rappers and their peers cover subjects like impossible social media beauty standards, predatory men at work, the challenge of balancing [21st c?] life with respecting the more conservative culture of your elders, religion, the difficulties in finding a nice guy who's not been addled by online p0rn, female rivalry, politics....

Precisely.

Exactly the subjects discussed every single day on MN. Why wouldn’t people interested in these things be on MN?

I fear I must disagree with you. Ice Cube is the GOAT. Tupac is the other GOAT (OGOAT if you will).

KL is A GOAT undoubtedly but not THE GOAT. 😂😁

Zippidydoda · 22/02/2023 15:40

When you say “up and coming” are you thinking of younger rap artists?

I always think of these type of chat rooms as mainly used by people 25+. Simply because all the under 25s I know use things like TikTok/snap chat/that gaming chat app I can’t remember the name of.

Probably because we wouldn't be profitable enough a group to spend marketing time on, also I like the way you quoted me but also took it upon yourself to edit me, do you find 'street life' offensive or something lol

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 22/02/2023 15:50

Tbh, @Zippidydoda I used ‘up and coming’ because, from my close observation of an adjacent art form, women can find themselves stuck in the ‘emerging’ category for half a lifetime, (or until they give up in frustration) while men of similar talent and experience zoom into the stratosphere.

I’d imagine most female rappers are going on dates, saving for deposits, getting pregnant, navigating relationships with in-laws, and choosing schools for their children at the same time as they are forging careers in music.

I was about to say “No, of course not.” But actually it does somewhat stereotype all women rap artists as living one particular type of life. Aren’t quite a few young women rappers privately educated? I highly doubt they’re loitering around Shoreditch or the Cotswolds dealing little bags of white powder …

I edited it to make my point more clearly (through agreeing with you) - the subject matter of contemporary UK rap lyrics is essentially the subject matter of MN, so rap artists would be as at home here as anyone else.

I don't know about privately educated but Shaybo, Ivorian, Trillary Banks are definitely rapping about road life and have experienced it. Particularly Trillary and everything she went through with her mother.

As to your second point, I've never heard a drill or grime song in which an artists boasts thatshe can make a single chicken last 5 meals or uses her bars to complain about her MiL. But as I said, it is simply not worth the marketing spend for them to come on here and do an AMA as it's really hard to scrape user data off MN and that time and spend would be better spent doing a Reddit AMA or being on Tik Tok to make their new song go viral.

CrkdLttrCrkdLttr · 22/02/2023 16:08

Oh I didn’t mean making an ‘appearance’ on AMA! I meant I see no reason why rap artists (women in particular) would not be amongst the general, anonymous cohort of MN posters.

Oh my god! Yes, she probably leads all of the most vicious pile-ons on AIBU.

ZorbaTheHoarder · 22/02/2023 16:16

I know that Stormzy had a parking thread on here a while ago, but he got torn apart for not providing a diagram and I think he flounced in the end!

Comefromaway · 22/02/2023 16:18

I used to like Salt & Pepa and I love Hamilton musical - does that count?

Haha there was a whole thread about this recently actually with someone claiming Eminem was the GOAT and a lot of other people disagreeing 😂
A very good argument was put forth for Jay Z and that kind of won me round but I will give you KL is without a doubt the hottest of all time.

Fairislefandango · 22/02/2023 18:28

The fact that they could be doesn't mean they are likely to be. I expect that going by job, rappers are probably very low on the list of jobs Mners are likely to have. Not sure why you're worried about exclusion. It's not as if anyone is banning them from MN (or demanding to know people's job before letting them post!

Jimboscott0115 · 22/02/2023 18:31

I'd suggest two things contribute to this view, the fact that most 'up and coming' rappers aren't going to be on MN because it's not really somewhere most 20 something's would think/want to go on and the average user age will be somewhere around late 30s/40s and secondly I could name any demographic and state the same because MN is a fraction of the overall population so it's always more likely than not that someone isn't on here.

Bigpinktrain · 22/02/2023 18:35

Little Simz is someone I really truly admire and I would love if she visited mn every now and then 😁

unclebuck · 22/02/2023 18:40

Alesha Dixon is a rapper 😂 She is a singer, rapper, dancer and presenter. Quadruple threat! AND she is so beautiful and outrageously cool that she was specifically requested by Pharrell for the 'she wants to move' video. Are we looking for a specific sort of rapper then? Or age? Most on MN are 30plus with kids, why would young women/men join this site?
I think other good bets would be Ms Dynamite and Estelle - they look like they'd be able to offer some good AIBU advice

Ice Cube is the GOAT but also a horrific Anti-Semite. Shame

Oh god yes. But only when he was trying to pal up with Nation of Islam. He's also anti-Asian too tho on the basis of 'Black Korea'.

Still, 'Dead On Arrival' says more in four minutes about systemic racism and the parlous state of the US emergency healthcare service, than entire books on the subject by sociology scholars.

Eminem's flow is unrivalled. And he's just incredibly funny.

Jay-Z is...OK I guess but I will never forgive him for turning Beyonce from a pretty good R&B singer into a truly terrible rapper.

No but I reckon Kelly Rowland ( much better singer than Bey) probably is.
