To think so many people on public transport are utterly gross?

Before I get slated, I use public transport to work, and into town, and to most places really. But AIBU to say that so many who use it are just gross with no social skills? is this just reflective of modern day selfish society, where no one gives a rats arse about anyone but themselves?

You get people coughing and sneezing with no effort to cover their mouths, people munching on food that stinks or crisps that crunch usually with their mouths open, people that talk and muck about SO LOUDLY that you can hear them over headphones, people vaping, people on their phones with speakers because they are SO IMPORTANT, people with their manky feet on the seats.......sorry, but why can't people just sit their quietly? it's absolutely vile.

YANBU other than I think you could have removed the 'on public transport' qualifier. People are just gross generally. I've just quit my gym because of the number of people jumping straight from the sauna/steam room into the pool completely ignoring the MANY signs saying to please shower first, and just what you would like to believe would be common sense/general decency that everyone else in the pool doesn't particularly like splashing through a thin film of sweat (boak!)

This is in a 'naice' health club but while there wasn't the same issue in the council pool I went to before that (because it didn't have a sauna, and did have lifeguards) there was still the issue where people didn't shower before they went into the pool and absolutely stunk of strong perfume/old fag smoke/sweat as you went past them. It's so utterly rank and isn't accepted in other countries where you HAVE to have a proper shower first. I don't get it the reluctance, you're going swimming, you'll be getting wet anyway JUST WASH!

Sorry to derail your thread but yes people are gross. Not sure if it's just a general increase in lack of authority (so they do what they want as don't care about being 'told off'), a move to individualism over community behaviour, or exacerbated further by covid when most people spent a lot of time not mixing so grew unused to being considerate of others?

DoesItMakeYouFeelBetter · 19/02/2023 16:04

People in the supermarket coughing and sneezing all over everything. Gross.

watchfulwishes · 19/02/2023 16:06

It is unpleasant but you're deluded if you think it was better in the past. People were less likely to e.g. wash hands after a shit in the good old days.

Supernova23 · 19/02/2023 16:06

True. It is literally everywhere but that was just an example that stood out to me. My tolerance of people rapidly decreases year on year.

Based on what I see in public toilets now, that hasn't changed. I often see people leave the stalls, walk out, and not wash their hands. And they wonder why bugs like gastroenteritis spread - gross.

So many people really are disgusting. I went in the ladies toilets in a branch of M&S yesterday. 2 out of 3 toilets were out of order, and the third was disgusting. Toilet paper strewn all over the floor and smelled foul. I told a member of staff about it and we had a little 'wtf is wrong with people?' moment

Casilero · 19/02/2023 16:09

I saw one of the staff in aldi today, actually stood on the bottom shelf of the chiller cabinet with her manky converse actually touching the packets of ham. I know they're wrapped but still wouldn't want to have something in my fridge that outdoor shoes had been all over. People are just grim sometimes

Yes, I read an article about this, basically the reason we think things were better in the past is we were younger so more optimistic, not that they actually were better.

When you're snogging your boyfriend on the bus you don't give a toss about whether someone else has their feet on the seats.

KattyKattyKatz · 19/02/2023 16:10

People farting as they get off the bus . Youths putting feet up on seats . Don't get many vandalised / graffitied seats as there are cameras everywhere.

That's unusual as they have a cleaning team in store and if not the staff do it . Probably not enough staff to do it as they have cut back to the bone

Recently saw a man get the nail clippers out and trim his nails on the tube with the bits of nail going everywhere around him 🤮

Was on a bus where a man coughed and hacked up so much phlegm he vomited all over himself. Yay! Hoorah. What a lovely experience that was.

Woman in Waitrose last week picked her nose, flicked it and then handled loose fruit. Mmmm yummy. But is it still vegan? 😂

M&S in Exeter last week was absolutely VILE. To the point where women were gagging. M&S mens were fine (apparently!)

MrsEX1 · 19/02/2023 16:21

Totally meant M&S Exeter ladies toilets!!

Not the whole store 😂

Gooseysgirl · 19/02/2023 16:22

YANBU... I know EXACTLY how I caught covid last week 😤

Saw this happening on a bus in London, and I was so grossed out I told him immediately how disgusting it was and to stop. Got told to fuck off... but I made my point and he stopped doing it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Had a manager who used to do this in the office, at his desk

BashfulClam · 19/02/2023 16:27

Yanbu, someone said once sneezed onto my hair on the train. It’s no coincidence that I got Covid within a few days of masks being scrapped.

Penguinsaregreat · 19/02/2023 16:33

Yanbu. Dh and I called for a drink after work on Friday. We went to a very nice, newish pub. This was straight after work so not as though people were drunk. A man cam in in his work clothes (it stated his company on his clothing) and he would not stfu. I said to dh I’ve had enough I don’t appreciate having to listen to that wanker shouting so all the world can hear how funny and important he is. We drank up and left, went elsewhere. Dh commented that as we were leaving a couple of women were saying how annoying this same man was.
The next pub we went in was very busy and yet everyone was talking at a civil level and not shouting, far more pleasant.

Carishina · 19/02/2023 16:35

YANBU. So much disgusting behaviour on public transport. I once sat behind a man on a bus who was shaving his head with a bic razor and occasionally tapping it against the hand rail to get rid of the stuck hairs. So gross!

That’s me, I can’t see the point in washing my hands then having to touch the filthy door on my way out. I gel my hands when I get outside.

Sainsbury toilet had poo trodden in on the floor last week 🥹

That's revolting

ShakespearesBlister · 19/02/2023 16:57

I was in the underground 3 times a fortnight ago. On each occasion there were people on the carriage coughing and sputtering, sneezing and blowing their noses. By the end of that week I developed a sore throat. Then headaches and blocked nose. Then a temperature. Then vomiting. Then I tested positive for COVID. I wish I'd walked.

Onefootinthegroove · 19/02/2023 17:23

People are seeming to lack basic manners these days.

ALongHardWinter · 29/09/2023 18:25

Totally agree. These are the reasons that I HATE using the tube. I would also add to the list people who sit in priority seats and won't offer a disabled person the seat. I have a disability and use a walking stick when I'm out and about, but it's got to the point where I won't use the tube if I can possibly help it at busy times. I am never ever offered a seat, even though people can see I'm struggling to stand on a moving train. I even got one of those TfL 'Please offer me a seat' badges. Didn't make one iota of difference. Thankfully buses are nowhere near as bad. I usually get offered a seat on busy buses.
