My journey is currently being ruined by this woman, blethering on and on and on about her ‘co-parenting’ problems. I wish I had the courage to tell her to shut up because nobody cares. Blah blah blah.

OP posts:

I just find it mildly irritating at best, but I normally have earbuds in.

OneMoreCookieMonster · 17/02/2023 15:30

Unfortunately, you can't stop life happening around you. Either embrace it as one of life's unpleasant experiences or just do what everyone else is doing and ignore it.

Was on a packed train with teen dd yesterday after a long day in London. Behind us were 4 pre teens playing truth or dare and spin the bottle laughing and shouting hysterically and daring each other to shout out such things as “your nan is fat” and getting progressively louder.1 and a half hours of this. Irritated didn’t even begin to describe how I was feeling. Lots of disapproving looks from fellow passengers. Two mums of said kids sat across the aisle and occasionally asked them to be quieter and were totally ignored. I very nearly stood up and gave them a piece of my mind but dd would have been mortified. I strongly suspect I would have got some applause from fellow passengers though!

BellePeppa · 17/02/2023 15:35

People have now upped the ante and loud mobile calls are so yesterday compared to having the call on loudspeaker! I’ve lost count how many of those I’ve been subjected to😡

HideousKinky · 17/02/2023 15:40

Once on a crowded train all of us in the carriage had to listen to a man arranging his father's funeral on the phone. Sentences like "My sister hasn't viewed the body yet, when can she come and do that?" rang out loudly. He seemed completely oblivious to how inappropriate a place it was to make such a call

donttellmehesalive · 17/02/2023 15:57

Im currently sitting in a hair salon and the woman next to me is loudly FaceTiming her mum. Throughout the entire appointment. Very rude to the stylist and the rest of us who have been forced to listen to her mum's medical ailments and various other things that would have been better discussed privately. Someone mentioned it and she seemed genuinely surprised - 'it's no different than if my mum was sat next to me.'

VladmirsPoutine · 17/02/2023 16:05

I find things like that extremely embarrassing. Some people really don't care and I find it such an odd part of the psyche.

ChocChoc889 · 17/02/2023 16:05

Oh god they're awful. But whyyyy is it so awful? I can't put my finger on it. Somehow I don't mind two people having a conversation but there's something about one way mobile convos that are irritating as fuck

Tinkerbyebye · 17/02/2023 16:07

I would be tempted to join in! Give her some suggestions on what she could do

suggest she posts on MN for some support!

if she says mind your own I would tell her the whole carriage is now invested in her problems as she has been very loudly forthcoming about them

KimberleyClark · 17/02/2023 16:10

It’s the really self important work calls that get me. Made really loudly so everyone in the carriage knows how important they are.

YesitsBess · 17/02/2023 16:10

I was on a train the other day and witnessed someone having a teams meeting with 5 other people on her speakers! Utterly baffling.

JunkinDonuts · 17/02/2023 16:13

This is one of the upsides of being profoundly deaf. I just turn my hearing aid off. Bliss 😁

Appleass · 17/02/2023 16:13

Quitelikeit · 17/02/2023 15:09

Well she isn’t talking to you and the person she is telling clearly cares…..

Get some earphones or put up and shut up is what I would recommend

one of the delights of society we have to put up with nowadays! Totally pig ignorant to anyone else but themselves!

Butchyrestingface · 17/02/2023 16:14

Yes.

Bring back hanging.

"They're pieces of shit". "They honestly should be shot".

If you had to guess who was being described here how many guesses before you got to 'People talking on a train'?

People with no regard for others around them treating public transport like their lounge. Inconsiderate. Not just talking on a train.

JackieDaws · 17/02/2023 16:22

Oooo aren't you hard and edgy.

MoleAtTheCounter · 17/02/2023 16:28

Sitting in the Quiet Zone has its own risk. When someone starts a conversation there the irritation is magnified tenfold.

I used get the 0620 into London, sitting in the QZ with the same silent, stony faces. One time a group of four got in, full of joy and answering phone calls with "I'm on a train! Going to the airport! I'm on holiday!". Being a true Brit I sat there, silently raging, sometimes catching the eye of a fellow stony who I knew felt the same.

Bogeyes · 17/02/2023 16:34

Turn your ringtone to loudest and get your pal to phone you so you can ignore it and annoy the culprit.

Exactly! I don't get it either. Even loud conversations between two people don't bother me like a mobile phone conversation does and I have no idea why.

I was on a bus last week and a guy got on and sat directly behind me and had a loud phone conversation. In the end, I felt so irritated that I turned round and glared at him. He caught my eye and my glare.

Reader - he got up and went upstairs. No more phone call behind me. Omg. My new superpower?

rexythedinosaur · 17/02/2023 16:45

I find it interesting that there are people who do this without a second thought, and people who would be absolutely horrified by the idea and would feel very self conscious about bothering other passengers.

Like people's brains just work so differently.

No judgement on either personality type really, but it's just intriguing.

VapeVamp12 · 17/02/2023 16:47

One of my biggest pet peeves especially in a quiet zone!

Ludo19 · 17/02/2023 16:53

I've no patience for people who talk endlessly full stop.

DahliaMacNamara · 17/02/2023 15:13

I love a bit of earwigging, myself. If anyone who does this is reading, there's some nosey fucker like me listening to every word.

Yes, sometimes it's annoying and sometimes it's fun to eavesdrop.

But this is also coming to planes, thanks to the EU. Why. Just why. Why does anyone need to make a phone call on a plane?

Mojoj · 17/02/2023 17:10

I like to listen in. Sometimes it's quite juicy...🤣🤣🤣🤣

girlfriend44 · 17/02/2023 17:27

I hate it and wouldn't do it myself.
