Do you clean your bins?!

Hamster1111 · 13/02/2023 20:58

Inspired by the outsourcing thread.

I've never, ever cleaned my outside bins. Nor do I ever intend to. Am I slovenly?

Yabu - my bins are sparkling
Yanbu - they're outside. Who cares

In 2002 I had a bin man. Bin was sweet smelling and came back super clean after a hot wash.

I cannot believe that 21 years later I cannot find a bin cleaner person. Moved to a different area and no one has set up a bin cleaning company.

Briefly there was a chap who set up, no hot water and not very good. But I signed up. Once he came. Once. Never again. I’ve googled bin cleaner. Nothing.

It makes sense to me, they follow the bin lorry and clean as they go. I wonder if it’s due to the 3 weekly bin collections.

Actually I might start up a bin cleaning company…

Itisbetter · 13/02/2023 21:41

Surely if you get maggots the birds will deal with them?

Icanbetherubberband · 13/02/2023 21:41

Probably done it 3 x my whole life, that was because of a bin bag breaking causing maggots (I don't ever buy cheap bags now), because somebody used my bin and had open take out containers including milkshakes so it was really filthy and stinky, and once when there was a bin strike I think (or delayed collection, can't remember why).
I have never cleaned my recycling one, because I rinse my recycling thoroughly. When we lived in a food waste area I washed the outside caddy though, because it got pretty disgusting especially in summer. Just with the garden hose, though

gamerchick · 13/02/2023 21:43

Nah the bin cleaners do it.

wheresmymojo · 13/02/2023 21:47

No. I agree with a PP.

Life is too fucking short to get elbows into bin juice.

wheresmymojo · 13/02/2023 21:49

I'll be honest. If I had maggots that would make me even less likely to clean the bin.

I mean...if you leave them a day or two they become flies and bugger off anyway.

I'd totally pay a man £5 to do it every so often though.

mrsbyers · 13/02/2023 21:56

We use bin liners and replace fortnightly after emptying

MrsClatterbuck · 13/02/2023 22:06

I clean the 2 food caddies. I put two full compostable bags inside another bigger bag so that keeps my bin from getting to manky plus I line the bottom with newspaper. I do intend to give it a good clean in the summer along with the general waste bin. The recycling bin doesn't get dirty as the waste is dry and clean that goes into it.

2Rebecca · 13/02/2023 22:09

I clean the lid and the top of the bin under it ie the bits that I touch but not the inside of the bin but nearly everything going in the non recycling bin is in a biodegradable bag so the bin itself doesn't get that manky

replace what fortnightly? Are there wheely bin liners? That would save me a £5 a month…

nalabae · 13/02/2023 22:12

Only when they get dog poo bags thrown in

XenoBitch · 13/02/2023 22:13

No.
They are outside, so I don't care.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 13/02/2023 22:13

No, I've never cleaned mine. They're not clean inside, but not so filthy the smell offends me when I open them. Never had maggots. The normal bin is bagged stuff, so shouldn't get them. The recycling bin doesn't have food in so shouldn't either.

oioimatey · 13/02/2023 22:14

This is genius! I've never thought to see if anyone would clean my outside bins but actually I'd love that, especially in summer.

Sparklybanana · 13/02/2023 22:16

I do wonder why sometimes I'm the minger for not washing enough and sometimes 'wasting my life' for washing too much.
I can't work out if I'm clean or dirty 🤣
I do wash my bins - once or twice a year. Inside bins more often.

IloveRickyGervaisAndHisTeeth · 13/02/2023 22:16

I don't clean my bins, but the waste one never has food waste in, as all our stuff goes down the waste disposal thing in the kitchen

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 13/02/2023 22:18

BiasedBinding · 13/02/2023 21:29

I have already said I rinse out the food caddy. But the recycling, landfill and garden waste bins don’t smell, aren’t maggoty and if it hasn’t rained for a bit are just a bit dusty. Why would I go swilling bleach all over the place?

You're like a dog with a bone.

not everyone has a good caddy or the collection of such things.

do you have babies in nappies? Pets?

just imagine for a minute that people have different lives to you.

2tired2bewitty · 13/02/2023 22:18

No, but we’ve got no pets or nappies and we still have weekly general waste collections so there’s less time for it to get manky. My neighbour gets hers done though.

Theunamedcat · 13/02/2023 22:19

In the summer not so much in the winter

Chill out. I was responding to this comment quoted below. Just imagine people for a minute that aren’t responding to you individually.

”I also do it as a mark of respect for my lovely cheerful bin men. Why should I expect them to handle wheelybin/recycling box/food slops caddy etc without any thought for the filthy job they do. It seems many don’t.”

userxx · 13/02/2023 22:20

BiasedBinding · 13/02/2023 21:03

What are you putting in a recycling bin that means it needs bleaching?

Dog shit.

userxx · 13/02/2023 22:21

BarrelOfOtters · 13/02/2023 21:09

A man cleans ours. Fortnightly collection, but food has to go in bin. In summer it can get minging .. we also have a dog. Also a regular visiting dog that is raw fed…

i started it after a scallop shell incident.

Is raw feed poo different ?

soboredtonight · 13/02/2023 22:23

In the winter if it's not clean at the bottom when you have to courtesy look just to check it's empty then yes I bleach it if looks like / smells like it needs it.

Every time which is twice a month when it's warmer.

I do it myself and my next door neighbours as he is elderly.
