Curtains

Ok, so not strictly AIBU but I need voting.

Please help settle a friendly disagreement about something trivial…..curtains.

In your opinion, which style of curtains look the most dated/unfashionable? Eyelet curtains (with the metal rings at the top) or curtains on rails with a string at one end so you pull the string and both curtains open together?

YANBU - having a rail with a pull cord at the end looks dated/unfashionable.

YABU - eyelet/ring top curtains look dated/unfashionable

I think some fashion trends are so old they're now 'vintage' or 'classic' even. I wouldn't go out and buy new eyelet (or tabtop) curtains but I don't think they're awful. I'd put them on a parr with home accessories such a heart shaped wooden 'heart shaped dangly things' or things that say Live, Love Laugh

SquashPenguin · 04/02/2023 21:18

I used to have pull cord curtains, they were good quality if a little dated. Eyelet curtains look so cheap and tacky.

I'm laughing at this as I had no idea there was so much hatred for curtains! Does everyone just have blinds them? Don't they make the room feel cold?

Same! I'm actually the exact opposite and I really can't stand blinds. I think curtains are just far more homely and cosy.

The only curtains I don't like are eyelet ones.

I can't stand the eyelet curtains, especially with a chrome/silver eyelets - I think they can look a bit cheap...

Disagree. Full length in nice heavy fabric that drapes well and they look fine

youshouldnthaveasked · 04/02/2023 21:21

You’ll all hate me. I have short length eyelet curtains. I used dylon machine dye to make them navy blue because new curtains are currently too expensive.

I only like Eyelet curtains, all other styles to me look untidy as you see a plastic rail or the curtains don't hide the metal rail.

Now you're making me question what eyelet curtains are as I'd have thought they would most definitely NOT cover the curtain pole. Aren't they the ones where no hooks are needed and you just thread them directly onto the pole through large typically silver metal holes or eyelets

KimberleyClark · 04/02/2023 21:25

In my 1930s house the windows have their original stained glass transom windows. I have pencil pleat curtains and wooden box pelmets. I don’t think blinds of any kind would look right at all.

GneissGuysFinishLast · 04/02/2023 21:30

I dislike curtains. We don’t have any - we have roller blackout blinds everywhere. I think curtains are pretty dated.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 04/02/2023 21:35

I love curtains. I think they soften a window and rooms feel echoey and a bit cold without.

I don't like eyelet ones, because they rarely work very well and don't keep heat in at all.

My curtains are all hung on ceiling mounted metal rails, and I think they look awesome - but then I am styling my 60s house in a 60s vibe so they fit. I'd have them regardless though tbh.

Corded tracks are so handy, but pricey for a decent one.

WeWereInParis · 04/02/2023 21:37

People who have full length curtains everywhere - don't they block the radiator heat? We only have them on windows that don't have a radiator below, but most of our windows do.

Curtains with a cord that opens both together would annoy me, sometimes you just need one curtain pulled across to block the sun, but you don't want both moving.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/02/2023 21:38

I was looking for curtains today in b&q (as there was 10% off everything and my last pairs from there were lovely, before the style police hunt me down 🙄) and there was not a single pair of pencil pleat curtains on sale, they were all eyelets. If you don’t want cheap shiny chrome fittings, there’s nothing for you.

I want proper pencil pleat with a pelmet and to hell with fashion. My grandmother had a sort of ‘pulling wand’ to pull the curtains over rather than a drawstring, and that’s what I want as well.

GlassBunion · 04/02/2023 21:43

There's nothing wrong with curtains.

Only fashionistas are bothered about that sort of thing.

Gertrudetheadelie · 04/02/2023 21:52

I'm a Mumsnet nightmare: curtains, carpets and ...(admittedly plain) net curtains! We've even kept the inherited pull-cord pencil pleat ones in the dining room, despite being a bit floral 90s, because they are ridiculously good quality and I really can't be arsed to replace something that works and isn't so egregious that I can't live with it.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 04/02/2023 22:09

I love mine. Made them myself 😉 I love floor length curtains but all my windows are above radiators so that isn’t happening! These were originally in my bedroom but moved downstairs to lounge as I needed the extra warmth. Cost of living etc etc! I hate hate hate blinds and do not want them!! I want something hanging in my window to keep in/out the heat.

I've got a handbag I made with that Ikea fabric. 😀

ScramblePud · 04/02/2023 20:49

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever come across curtains with a string that opens both sides. Personally, I think curtains rarely look good and almost always look dated. There are exceptions, of course, and I even have curtains but, in general, I think most curtains look dated.

Swish make them: up to 250cm the pull cords operate both curtains.

Pull Cord Settings
125cm - 250cm tracks - pull cords are on then left hand side only
300cm - 500cm tracks - pull cords are on each side, one for each curtain.

WeCome1 · 04/02/2023 22:23

I suppose eyelet curtains are more modern, but they are ugly and cheap looking.

Pleiades2020 · 04/02/2023 22:26

O dear I have eyelet window length curtains on chrome curtain rails. I like them, really easy to open as they glide easily and a lot warmer than blinds.

Canthave2manycats · 04/02/2023 22:33

I've blinds in my bathroom, kitchen and utility room only. Wouldn't want them anywhere else! I think they really 'dress' a room.

I like eyelet curtains actually, and I have several pairs. All of them were bespoke, from brands like Designer's Guild, so they have good quality, heavy lining, and they hang beautifully. My living and dining rooms have eyelets, they're Warwick fabrics and cost a ridiculous amount of money about 18 years ago. Still love them!

WednesdaysPlaits · 04/02/2023 22:37

I actually have both Roman blinds and full length curtains at all my windows. Curtains only at French doors (although two sets of French doors have double rails holding both a lightweight and a heavy weight pair).

Only bathrooms have a blind alone.

AuntieDolly · 04/02/2023 22:43

I have blinds and pencil pleat short curtains with a string pull on the same window. Burn the heretic!

AuntieDolly · 04/02/2023 22:44

And a pelmet so there!

BigMadAdrian · 04/02/2023 22:46

I don't like curtains at all. I don't like blinds or shutters either - all they do is rob the room of light and space. We aren't overlooked, so just have bare windows. I lean towards maximalism in interiors, but really can't stand anything at windows.

Lorrymum · 04/02/2023 22:52

I hate blinds. I live in a road of pretty Edwardian terrace house and most windows are now filled with hideous dark wood blinds.

GuyFawkesDay · 04/02/2023 22:55

Inherited a load of Venetian blinds here. Hideous things. Gather dust and they've yellowed dreadful.

Give me curtains please!! Where they don't work I'll just make do with privacy window film instead.
