Curtains

Ok, so not strictly AIBU but I need voting.

Please help settle a friendly disagreement about something trivial…..curtains.

In your opinion, which style of curtains look the most dated/unfashionable? Eyelet curtains (with the metal rings at the top) or curtains on rails with a string at one end so you pull the string and both curtains open together?

YANBU - having a rail with a pull cord at the end looks dated/unfashionable.

YABU - eyelet/ring top curtains look dated/unfashionable

I have the corded type in my living room. Track ones in two bedrooms and eyelets in my bedroom. Out of them all I prefer the corded but I'm 64 so maybe they are old fashioned.
I don't like blinds for me but my dd has both curtains and blinds for heating purposes and they look very nice.

SuperSonicMonic · 05/02/2023 09:04

I miss my swish (pull cord) curtain with the Pelmet dreadfully. Now I’ve got some right jazzy eyelet affairs up right now, from Dunelm. I can’t be doing with some of the horrors that people throw up. We’ve got privacy film at the moment, but I’ve got someone coming round this week to measure up for blinds. I’m shocked that people have never heard of swish curtains, & sad that they have to draw their curtains by hand.

Doesn't matter how nice or heavy the fabric is, if they've got chrome eyelets they're always going to look tacky.

Ah, you're one of those
If it's not to your personal taste then it must be bad taste.
Except it doesn't work like that.

Eyelet curtains are an abomination.

Co-sign!

But why is 'something my grandparents would have had' a bad thing? Presumably grandparents also had saucepans and bedside lamps and toilet roll holders and bookshelves...

Exactly. @ShinyMe

I'm slightly bemused by people scorning pull cords as a thing. They are not visible - they are hidden in the curtain track and the bits you pull at the sides are hidden by the edge of the curtains. They literally do nothing to change the aesthetic of the curtains or their hanging, they just add an element of ease. I mean - I am guessing that these people hate curtain tracks, and that is what they think is old fashioned and terrible? Otherwise it makes no sense.

Absolutely.
This is such a weird thread.

I agree with you @MistyGreenAndBlue
It seems there are plenty on MN who struggle to grasp that we are thousands of individuals with different opinions, tastes, experiences, and independent thought.

Tull lenght/height wave top curtains can look really contemporary, I wouldn't go with anything else.

Curtains that only go half way down are also hideous.

I remember reading a previous thread where everyone agreed that of course curtains should be full length to be stylish even on normal windows. But that was the first time I’d ever come across the idea of full length curtains (except on full length windows). What’s so ugly about the bit of wall beneath a window that it needs to be hidden? Literally don’t think I’ve ever seen this style in real life, obviously all my friends and family missed the memo that normal curtains are ‘hideous’! MN is very strange sometimes.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 05/02/2023 18:48

Quite - also long curtains will block the heat from a radiator from reaching the room at just the time when you need it most. This thread is bonkers.

PurpleParrotfish · 05/02/2023 18:51

Oh and I grew up with pull cord curtains and there were a couple of windows where they always jammed. So fashion considerations aside I wouldn’t choose them.

YukoandHiro · 05/02/2023 18:54

Surely triple pleat tops with a drape to disguise the pole are the most dated - but who cares, just get what you like (or in my case easiest to hang, which is why I still go for eyelet)

DappledThings · 04/02/2023 23:16

I don't have any preference between types of curtain but any curtain is better than a blind. I hate blinds, they look so cold and functional. We have them in the study only because it is a mainly functional space. Would never have them in a room I actually want to relax in.

Totally agree, rooms with only blinds always look like offices to me, especially those awful vertical blinds. I have curtains and blinds in the bedrooms because especially at the back the sun is so bright in the morning and I like to sleep late!

IglesiasPiggl · 05/02/2023 19:08

I suppose the most modern thing is to instruct Alexa to activate the dimming mode on your windows! But I like curtains, definitely prefer them to blinds or shutters. They soften the room more.

ColdHandsHotHead · 05/02/2023 19:11

My curtains are mostly the kind with slots in the fabric that the pole is threaded through. No rings or noise when you draw them.

I prefer full length as it looks more elegant to me
But shorter curtains are not "hideous" and anyway, people can have what they like in their own house.
In fact, now I think about it, short curtains on the inside of a bay or window seat can look extremely pretty. I think it depends on the style of the room

Redruby2020 · 06/02/2023 14:24

@ShinyMe You didn't get it at all. My comment was in response to the other person asking for a pic etc as they hadn't seen the pull cord type curtains before. And that's what i was trying to say they are 'something my grandparents would of had' as in, they have been around a long time!
Not that there is anything wrong with them 🤷🏻‍♀️

bloodyplanes · 06/02/2023 14:35

I only have full length curtains with eyelets. Don't like tab tops and definitely not rings on a curtain rail. I like blinds but it makes the house look a bit clinical with no curtains, a bit like an office rather than a home and blinds don't keep it warm.

user1497787065 · 06/02/2023 14:44

I have mainly Roman blinds, three pairs of full length curtains on poles and one on a corded track with a pelmet and pull cord as the window is too wide for a pole.

I don't like vertical blinds or eyelet curtains and think you should always buy/have made the best you can afford where curtains/blinds are
Concerned.

No one notices a cheap carpet but cheap or poorly made curtains stand out a mile.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/02/2023 14:48

Pull cords stop you touching the curtains, as people tend to pull them from the same place each time, the curtains get dirty and have a worn patch more quickly.

DaveyJonesLocker · 06/02/2023 14:49

I can barely understand what people are talking about. Curtains are curtains, I have zero preference.

LynneBenfield · 06/02/2023 15:02

Good quality corded curtains on a classic header style are just that, a classic. Eyelets were a fashion thing (clean lines and all that) and cheaper (less fabric required as no gather), so you could either spend less or have a more luxurious fabric for the same price as a traditionally headed curtain in a more affordable fabric. I would always choose corded over eyelets but imo they aren't really comparable because of the expense.

Lovesacake · 06/02/2023 15:59

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone have full length curtains on a half length window…if I did I’d just assume that they’d got their measurements massively wrong and feel sorry for them that they’d wasted their money on too big curtains!

youshouldnthaveasked · 06/02/2023 19:29

Just for some clarity please can someone tell me what is wrong with:

  1. eyelet curtains
  2. half length curtains

because I honestly can’t see the big deal

Happygone · 06/02/2023 19:38

I like eyelet curtains and don't like blinds. I find them too office like.

LynneBenfield · 06/02/2023 19:40

I’m confused by the blinds being cold and office like comments. I get that for vertical blinds and rollers but romans can be very soft and cosy looking.
