No offence but...

If someone says "no offence but you remind me of (famous person)", they don't think it's a compliment do they?

Someone said that to me yesterday. I think the person they compared me to is fab so will take it as a compliment but I don't think it was meant that way?

I've not said who on purpose as I wanted general thoughts.

@Secretstupendous
Haha. I've done that very thing on pp haven't I?

My cousin seems nice but is a bit I-just-tell-it-as-it-is-ish.

I guess the bit after "but" is the key bit there.

Often “no offence but…” means “I’m about to say something offensive”, often “no offence but…” means “everyone is offended by everything so I’m going to caveat that this is a compliment so you don’t assume I’m insulting you”. Backfired somewhat, eh?

If you’re not offended, why are you trying to find a reason to be offended? It wasn’t offensive.

I've had more than one man tell me I look "just like" Kelly Brook (I'm blonde now so no longer get this)

I think what they are actually saying is "you're a bit chubby but I still fancy you" 😅

CandlelightGlow · 27/01/2023 07:34

Sorry that should say "I'm blonde and about 4 stone heavier right now" 😅

Reminds me of my late MIL, who used to preface a LOT of things she said with "Well I don't mean to be rude, but..." which she thought gave her free pass to be horrifically rude. I eventually got round to interjecting "Well DON'T then" before she got a chance to continue.
I've also had the tradesman cold calling at the door, insulting parts of my property. Strange sales tactic!

I think in this situation they say 'no offence', not because they think the person they are comparing you to is horrible, but incase you don't like the comparison.

Devoutspoken · 27/01/2023 07:55

Perhaps it's am age thing if you are younger than her

Devoutspoken · 27/01/2023 07:55

Didn't think kelly Brook was particularly 'chubby'

She's a lot bigger than she used to be. Not saying that's a bad thing btw.
