To think that women 'life coaches' should just bore off with their thinly veiled MLM bullsh*t

First of all, a disclaimer.

I'm an employed coach, for a large financial institution working in a charitable capacity - coaching IS valuable and can change lives.

Monetising it in such a way as 'YOU TOO CAN BE A LIFE COACH AND I'LL SHOW YOU HOW WITH MY FREE INTRODUCTORY EBOOK INCLUDING WITH EVERY ONE DAY COURSE (ONLY £495.00 + VAT for the first 10 to respond)

It's some exploitative pyramid selling bullshit isn't it. Sick of seeing them all over social media,

AIBU??

Why women? Are men life coaches just much better?

tinselandjoy · 19/01/2023 15:00

It's not a pyramid scheme though. It's just advertising you don't value.

Coach isn't a protected occupation.

Where did you get that from? This is predominantly a woman's forum isn't it, so this is a post about women, of which I'm one, what's your angle?

Fair point. I definitely don't value it and I think it's very snake oily to suggest that you will coach someone to be a lifecoach so they can coach someone to be a lifecoach etc in quick succession and in a one off session.

YABU. It's not a regulated profession. I imagined you learned to do it somewhere?

CantFindTheBeat · 19/01/2023 15:11

There are some INCREDIBLE Life Coaches who have trained for years and specialise in specific things. These people are incredibly valuable.

The ones you're referencing are not, I agree, and they are often the people who could benefit from intensive life coaching themselves!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 19/01/2023 15:12

I sort of agree with you but don't like the bizarre focus on women only as if they're the only ones who do this.

LadyMary50 · 19/01/2023 15:12

I agree,it’s all over my local FB.In fact MMS is all over my local FB.Quite frankly the advertising is dishonest and designed to attract low income women(mainly)..

Correct.

Not from Stacey who's got a pure royal/FM hustle going as well alongside their juice plus franchise though, you know what I mean? These are the newly appointed life coaches I'm talking about, clearly.

I'm assuming her angle is why are you singling out women, when men carry out this bullshit too. Surely you want the whole practice of this to stop and you don't think that it's just women who should stop?

Maybe you've worded your heading badly?

Not that bizarre, this is a womans forum and I'm a woman, so it's most relevant to me and what I, as a woman, am targeted with. If you see these ads and are mainly targeted by men doing it we are probably looking at different things online and the algorythm reacts accordingly.

That's all, nothing sinister.

Maybe you've read far too much into it?

These courses are women exploiting women.

That's correct.

potniatheron · 19/01/2023 15:18

I confess that I don't really understand what life coaching is and how it's different from counselling or therapy.

I don't understand why anyone would pay a stranger to tell them what to do with their life. If you can't figure it out yourself then you need to think harder and maybe ask people who really know you, not shell out to a stranger.

But equally I could well have got it totally wrong. And I agree that the adverts you're highlighting are snake oil sales.

ZenNudist · 19/01/2023 15:19

Mumsnet is not a woman's forum. It's "by parents for parents".

I've not seen any life coaches on FB but the ones I've heard of around here are female. Never felt the need to get a coach.

LongerThanADryJanuary23 · 19/01/2023 15:19

Hopefully you don't come across as angry and argumentative when you hear something you don't like or agree with when you're giving a coaching session

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 19/01/2023 15:19

I've seen both men and women advertising this shit. I don't think it's any worse when women do it, so I do find your emphasis on the sex of the bogus life coaches misplaced.

Bizarre might not be the right word for it. Internalised misogyny maybe.

All the MMS on my local FB for life coaches and candles etc are definitely aimed at women,it’s the “calling all mums, want to own your own business working from home”.Bullshit

Stompythedinosaur · 19/01/2023 15:21

This isn't an issue linked to gender and YABU to claim it is.

verdantverdure · 19/01/2023 15:22

I'm an equal opportunities MLM hater.

BelenaConhamHarter · 19/01/2023 15:23

There's loads of pyramid shit out there atm. I think you're seeing more of the life coach stuff because it's embedded in your algorithms somewhere.

I just hope people don't fall for this stuff atm, there's so much pressure to increase income.

Hearmeout · 19/01/2023 15:23

LongerThanADryJanuary23 · 19/01/2023 15:19

My clients tend to be less needlessly reactive and more intuitive, as a rule, so it's not really an issue thus far.

Face to face is always better than over a keyboard isn't it, that's just the way of it. Your passive aggressiveness comes over loud and clear here, but hopefully less so in real life.
