To think that women 'life coaches' should just bore off with their thinly veiled MLM bullsh*t

First of all, a disclaimer.

I'm an employed coach, for a large financial institution working in a charitable capacity - coaching IS valuable and can change lives.

Monetising it in such a way as 'YOU TOO CAN BE A LIFE COACH AND I'LL SHOW YOU HOW WITH MY FREE INTRODUCTORY EBOOK INCLUDING WITH EVERY ONE DAY COURSE (ONLY £495.00 + VAT for the first 10 to respond)

It's some exploitative pyramid selling bullshit isn't it. Sick of seeing them all over social media,

AIBU??

You get it!!

We all 'get it'. Your style is just really abrasive and superior, which is the main reason you're getting a largely negative response.

Yabu. I can’t stand MLM either, but don’t get why your post is aimed solely at women or why you’re so belligerent about people querying it.

I don't count answering an objection and asserting my position as belligerent, I'm confident in what I'm saying and this particular post is absolutely aimed solely at women, if that's your main point, with no other connotations attached to that other than the ones being imagined or created by others, but I respect your opinion.

The vote would suggest different at this stage, i.e. it's loaded in agreement.

Some people aren't as vocal in their opinions as you and I.

I think it’s the ‘women life coaches’ that is making people bristle suggesting by omission that men life coaches are somehow exempt from the wide brush you are tarring people with…

I’ll admit it’s not for me but I also think if women think they have something to offer others and people are willing to pay (and presumably get something from it?) who am I to judge. I’ll say the ‘become a life coach’ like me is MLM’y and I hate it but life coaches you would hope is someone who has had success in their career and has branched out to be self employed and share their wisdom I have no issue with. I won’t be buying, but for me it is fairly benign.

PurpleParrotfish · 19/01/2023 16:42

It could be both though OP. I mean I agree with your general premise and I also think your tone is a bit belligerent / abrasive towards those who challenged you about why you only targeted women ‘life coaches’.

TinyArsePhone · 19/01/2023 16:42

Oh god the coaches-who-coach-coaches-to-coach-coaches...

£££ to do bullshit made up "courses" in how to sell "courses" in selling "courses"

YANBU

TinyArsePhone · 19/01/2023 16:44

I started a thread about something similar a few years ago and got handed my arse though because apparently it helps a lot of people and I shouldn't drag people down just because it's not for me Hmm

So sorry this happened. I can see you found a use for your handed arse based on your user name 😁

LolaSmiles · 19/01/2023 17:03

I think people are getting hung up on the women angle.

It's not that female coaches are awful.
It's that there is a particular kind of self-styled life coach are women and they target women.

The sort of model the OP is talking about doesn't target men. Other scams target men, but this one is very much about exploiting women.

I know women who are excellent practitioners in similar fields, but what they have in common is a lot of studying, relevant accredited courses and usually a lot of relevant work experience in related areas. That's why they're so good. They're not all over social media telling people to go be a boss babe darling.

Unfortunately people sometimes love a pile on on these forums - particularly if you have the courage of your convictions.

IME, those are the “beginners”. The MOOC/online course industry is booming and there’s a huge variety. Everything from “become a boss babe” to “equine genetics and colourations”.

Most people who go into the industry start with the “imma be a life coach/business coach” and a lot of the stuff they learn is marketing and sales - those with any head for the game soon learn that the term “life coach” is too vague to be attractive.

I work in a sideline industry - I build the websites and digital systems for the online coaches. I feel zero guilt about it given more than 12 million people in the uk have more than £50k in cash assets.

I also refuse to work with people who haven’t nailed their MVP - and tbh, my prices repel those who haven’t figured it out

@LolaSmiles exactly that, thank you.

I don't know why some are getting hung up on that angle, it's my chosen topic, if I wan't to talk about crypto coaching aimed at exploiting men I'd start another thread.

People can comment their opinion that is differing to mine, but if I confidently and assertively restate my position, I'm being 'belligerent' and 'abrasive'.

Those are diminishing words that aren't going to fly with me.

I am confident in what I posted and I am right about these WOMEN exploiting WOMEN.

I also like your MVP benchmark to be honest, that makes sound business sense.

I do think their is some altruism in there, genuinely wanting to help, but monetising that help, with nothing to show but teaching another person how to monetise it, it a fugazi , as they say 😊

Just seems narcissistic to me. Why would someone be an expert on life? In a way it actually invalidates other professions like counselling and psychotherapy that are genuinely there to try to help people improve their lives. All the life coaches I know are very much a “live like I do sort of thing I am great I have my shit togetner, you do not”.

Each to their own I guess, they certainly do not inspire me.

Absolutely that

LoraPiano · 19/01/2023 17:36

Wow you sound really hypocritical. Coaching is not psychotherapy or counselling or anything. You just give some advice to people. There is nothing complex to scientific about it. So what if as you say (in your condescending way too) they learned it from Stacey and you from some course you didn't pay for?

Are you just scared other people becoming coaches dilutes your credentials?

This is what I mean about beginners calling themselves a life coach.

NONE of us have all the answers. Not even us old and jaded one.

Now if your friend “Sally” started calling herself a life coach your eyes just might roll out of their head. But if instead Sally said “I can help you make sense of your divorce even if you’re 55 and your children have flown the nest” and you’ve watched her come through the other side and seen her bloom, then she’s got a message and can help.

Personally I reserve my loathing for 22 year old Australians in bikinis giving life advice… 😉

AnyMucca · 19/01/2023 17:39

Laughing, thinking back at Peep Show, when Mark prints Jeremy a Life Coach certificate.

MissWings · 19/01/2023 17:51

@sidelineservice

Yes no one has the answers. No one.

I do know of a 23 year old life coach actually 😂. She is lovely and very good at marketing but I’ll pass thanks!
