I have quite naturally yellow, slightly misaligned teeth and up until my early 30’s I never really gave it much thought. However, during the last decade I have become more and more ashamed of my smile and it’s really starting to get me down.

I’m due to have an implant put in this year and on one hand I am considering having Invisalign and maybe some whitening done.

On the other hand I feel sad / angry that I feel pressured (by current beauty standards) to make my teeth ‘perfect’ and can’t just be happy as I am.

These days it seems everyone has perfectly straight and blindingly white teeth!

As lovely as the straight white teeth are they remind me of dentures, so you may as well just get some false teeth.

I know what you mean, although the thought of dentures..😱

I’ve had Invisalign. Fun fact, some people’s teeth get more crooked with age! I use whitening toothpaste. That’s about it.

xogossipgirlxo · 19/01/2023 14:23

Mine aren't too bad, although also bit misaligned at the bottom. Upper teeth are nice. Not losing my sleep over this, but my dentist recommends invisalign as I struggle with proper cleaning spaces between teeth. I can't afford it right now anyway. I do whitening though- gels, strips etc.

My husband has perfectly straight teeth, but not perfectly white. You can't have it all I guess.

I agree with the pressure though.

CorpusCallosum · 19/01/2023 14:24

Not everyone has perfect teeth, that's just what Invisalign wants you to believe and they are marketing HARD at the moment. It's everywhere so it's not a surprise that you and others will suddenly be feeling like this is a 'problem'.

If this is just about teeth & you can afford it easily then there's no problem, just do it. But, if you think this is symptomatic of a deeper discontentment or anxiety then consider spending the money on some talking therapy instead? A makeover for your mind instead of your teeth 💚

There's a middle ground to be found somewhere in-between

"perfectly straight and blindingly white teeth"

and

"naturally yellow, slightly misaligned teeth"

JamSandle · 19/01/2023 14:28

I dont like the very obvious fake teeth look. I think it looks frightening.

VampireNightclub · 19/01/2023 14:30

I've also had Invisalign, I had a crooked front tooth and as I got older, another crooked tooth got much worse. The Invisalign couldn't completely straighten the tooth without more trays after 18 months, and I was happy enough with how it looked, so I stopped.

Even so, my teeth look so much better than they used to and I'm happy to fully smile in photos, which I never would pre-Invisalign. I think that they look like great 'normal' teeth now.

Interestingly, I've also just had whitening trays made by my dentist. Again, I don't want blinding white teeth, just something to take away the years of staining on the bottom teeth. I got rid of most of the staining and then stopped them. After I've had my next check-up and clean I'll use the rest of the solution (it's stored in the fridge) but I'm not looking to go super white.

Anyway, long winded way of saying that I've done both, not gone overboard with either and am super happy with the results!

Yes, this. Noticed a few men lately have clearly had veneers (seems to be a trend to go to Turkey) and in my opinion they look bloody awful. They don’t look real at all, more akin to dentures.

I have perfectly fine teeth - a little bit crooked in places and generally normal. I was initially offered braces when I was young, but my dentist said that I didn’t really NEED them and (his words were along these lines) slight differences and imperfections between the appearance of people’s teeth was, in his opinion, far nicer than everyone having exactly the same, ‘perfect’ teeth. Nevertheless, like you, I also now feel that pressure now that everyone seems to be getting everything corrected. Slightly crooked teeth aren’t the norm anymore.

I’m sufficiently old to remember the time when perfectly aligned white teeth did indeed mean they weren’t their own.

If you look at old photographs and paintings, it’s relatively recently that people have been expected to reveal their teeth when they smile. Do we reveal our teeth because they’re whiter and straighter, or do we whiten and straighten them because we need to reveal them?

FunkyMonks · 19/01/2023 14:37

Mine could do with a scale and polish but at moment can't see dentist unless it's emergency.
I'm not really into the fake bright white teeth look so much so that I had a molar removed years ago and asked if I wanted a fake one and said no because of the damage it would cause to my other teeth having it there.
I've also got a cap on another tooth sadly the damage to those were down to another dentist poor work that resulted in me having to have a root canal done on the one and constant issues with the other that in the end I had it pulled.

It doesn't really bother me if others think my teeth aren't beautifully white I'd rather have my natural teeth and no gum issues or any other teething issues.
I'm 36 so no defiantly am not following the sheep when it comes to teeth or any other extreme beauty regime.

Meghan has lovely teeth and much nicer than those Turkey teeth most celebrities have these days

SerialFaffer · 19/01/2023 14:41

She’s beautiful. I definitely wouldn’t mind having teeth like Meghan’s (but also irked that I feel any pressure to change the appearance of my teeth).

BlueKaftan · 19/01/2023 14:42

She has lovely teeth!

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 14:43

It's rare to find a famous American without those big gnashers Grin

Resist the pressure!

1FootInTheRave · 19/01/2023 14:43

My teeth are one of my favourite bits of me.

Naturally straight and pretty white.

Not remotely veneer like though.

NoNameNowAgain · 19/01/2023 14:44

Yes, it’s annoying. Mine are particularly porous. I did have some whitening treatment once.

malificent7 · 19/01/2023 14:47

I hate the look of " turkey teeth." Like rows of white toast.

malificent7 · 19/01/2023 14:47

White bread*

HarlanPepper · 19/01/2023 14:49

My teeth are sort of beige and the top incisors have fluorosis splotches on them. They are far from perfect but they seem pretty strong and I don't think about them much.

Kam610 · 19/01/2023 14:53

I hate my teeth. My bottom teeth are all crooked and two of my top teeth at the front are crooked. On top of that, my 2 pregnancies have completely wrecked my gums. I now have severe gum disease, my gums are rapidly receding, and no matter how well I clean them and floss, they are getting worse and worse. I'm currently getting 3 monthly treatments at the dentist for the foreseeable, and if no improvement then I'll be sent to a specialist. I'm only 31.

Vinylloving · 19/01/2023 14:55

I've just finished with fixed braces, my teeth had got worse over the years and I definitely hid my smile. I am so pleased with the results. I agree it is less normal to see imperfect teeth and you should resist pressure if you genuinely don't care about your teeth, but if it has always affected your confidence then why not?

Hillarious · 19/01/2023 15:09

Were I not married to DH, I'd be married to Jurgen Klopp, but I must admit I don't like his teeth. It's good, therefore, that I have DH. I like that my slightly crooked, off-white teeth look natural.

She had braces though (or veneers?), because her natural teeth weren't that pretty. So she felt pressure to have Hollywood smile too.

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 15:34

Whatever she did looks very natural @xogossipgirlxo I think a bit of irregularity is very attractive.
