To ask what you think about your teeth and current trends..

I have quite naturally yellow, slightly misaligned teeth and up until my early 30’s I never really gave it much thought. However, during the last decade I have become more and more ashamed of my smile and it’s really starting to get me down.

I’m due to have an implant put in this year and on one hand I am considering having Invisalign and maybe some whitening done.

On the other hand I feel sad / angry that I feel pressured (by current beauty standards) to make my teeth ‘perfect’ and can’t just be happy as I am.

These days it seems everyone has perfectly straight and blindingly white teeth!

Found a before and after. She just had a little gap but still nice!

Can't believe people posting about Megan teeth - she had a brace! I hate Turkey teeth, veneers, klopp, yuk!

I'm pointing out how nice they are. What's the fecking problem @Oblomov22 ?

Oblomov22 · 19/01/2023 16:08

Yes, but so they should be, because she had a brace.

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 16:08

Oh get real FFS

EleanorRavenclaw · 19/01/2023 16:12

I had my teeth straightened in my 30s, a proper train track brace. My teeth weren’t overly crooked but I was self conscious. If you have nice natural teeth then having them straightened and whitened won’t give you that horrible fake veneer look. You just look like you but with nice teeth if that makes sense.

I’ve never regretted getting mine done ever. I don’t even think about them now. I look after them wearing a retainer at night and use whitening toothpaste and occasionally strips.

QueefQueen80s · 19/01/2023 16:14

For quick cheap whitening buy some Crest whitening strips Professional Effects. I did a 10 day treatment and they went from yellow to a natural white, costs about £30. I do it once a year to top up. Never tried dentist as too expensive!

JaneJeffer · 19/01/2023 15:34

Whatever she did looks very natural @xogossipgirlxo I think a bit of irregularity is very attractive.

No, I agree she has very nice teeth, it's just that she felt pressured like most of us do. I also don't like Turkey teeth, would never pay for it.

Luckingfovely · 19/01/2023 16:19

It's not black and white though, is it? There's a huge range in between yellow, misaligned teeth and turkey teeth.

Surely most people just want nice, healthy looking teeth, which would fall somewhere in the middle.

Glasshopper · 19/01/2023 16:30

Meghan Markle has veneers, the shape of the teeth is different if you really look carefully.

There's a wide range of cosmetic options between crooked yellow teeth and blinding white giant horse veneers! It's not one or the other, is it now?

TBH I'd be concerned with the health of the enamel if your teeth are truly very yellow. It's probably worth getting a scale and polish to make sure it's only staining from tea and coffee, and not something worse.

KangarooKenny · 19/01/2023 16:36

If I see perfectly straight, white teeth I assume they are veneers, or you’re American 🤣

Runningoncoffeealone · 19/01/2023 16:36

I honestly hate my teeth. They were crooked as a child and I never got braces. I ended up getting extremely sick about 10 years ago, was in and out of hospital and lost teeth due to being unable to care for them/acid erosion from consistent vomiting. I now have five teeth missing, two of which are very obvious when I talk or laugh.
I'd love to have them all replaced but the cost is definitely not within my budget right now, so I just try not to think about it too much

Glittertwins · 19/01/2023 16:39

I had mine re-straightened after having a brace when a teen. They had moved quite badly and were starting to cause an issue with my jaw. Looking at one side of my family, it's very easy to see the inherited wonky teeth.

coralgeo · 19/01/2023 16:44

I hate my teeth. I have a pronounced overbite but refused braces as a teen as I was already getting bullied and thought it would make it worse. Regret that every day.

They are also discoloured due to years of smoking. I've got periodontal disease so not in a position to get them whitened.

I never open smile in photos and honestly I LOVED compulsory mask wearing, for once in my life I could talk to people and not feel conscious.

Quinoawoman · 19/01/2023 16:46

I had invisalign 8 years ago. Would recommend. Wish I'd done it sooner, before I got married. Hate looking at my wedding photos now.

Moonriver79 · 19/01/2023 16:52

FunkyMonks · 19/01/2023 14:37

Mine could do with a scale and polish but at moment can't see dentist unless it's emergency.
I'm not really into the fake bright white teeth look so much so that I had a molar removed years ago and asked if I wanted a fake one and said no because of the damage it would cause to my other teeth having it there.
I've also got a cap on another tooth sadly the damage to those were down to another dentist poor work that resulted in me having to have a root canal done on the one and constant issues with the other that in the end I had it pulled.

It doesn't really bother me if others think my teeth aren't beautifully white I'd rather have my natural teeth and no gum issues or any other teething issues.
I'm 36 so no defiantly am not following the sheep when it comes to teeth or any other extreme beauty regime.

Exactly this! I’m a fellow gum disease sufferer and I would much rather have slightly crooked or off colour teeth than bad gums.

CatNamedBob · 19/01/2023 16:53

I've had Invisalign. Was self conscious of my teeth in photos etc and feel much more confident now.

kwaziseyepatch · 19/01/2023 16:54

OP if you are considering whitening or orthodontics (Invisalign or otherwise) you need to do it before the implant. Otherwise the implant won't move and will be a pain to move teeth around and it won't change colour with the rest

ThisIsCringe · 19/01/2023 16:59

Invisalign literally changed my life. I’m so much more confident and actually smile in photos and I no longer have horrific jaw pain from grinding every night.

I agree with the more natural look though, it looks much nicer.

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 19/01/2023 17:02

A slightly crooked teeth alignment gives a bit of character in my opinion. Hollywood smiles are obviously fake and not that appealing in my opinion. I had braces and I'm glad I did but mine where more than crooked. My top set are straight. But the bottom set didn't stay straight as there was a problem with my retainer and the orthodontist wouldn't do a new one. It's not very crooked. But a bit . I actually quite like it now

EllieM27 · 19/01/2023 17:09

Since it always gets brought up with this topic, teeth are a cultural thing in the US. Smiling and friendliness are big parts of American culture, therefore parents that can afford it invest in their children’s teeth. It is an indicator of social background. There are several variations of the saying “Your smile says a lot about you/ You can learn a lot from a person’s smile/ etc” that you’ll hear or see occasionally. When going in to an interview, making a good first impression with a nice smile is definitely a thing. It’s ingrained into the culture in the US.

Usually it’s not veneers, but rather regular orthodontics and whitening. Teeth just tend to be more uniform-looking when they’re straight. If there’s one that’s too long or oddly shaped it may be filed/reshaped.

We spent a lot of time in California when I was younger so I had my orthodontic work done there (retainers, bite correction, Invisalign, whitening). I wasn’t keen at first but as my dad said, we’re here so may as well have it done by some of the best. Got the absolute piss taken out of me back home in school for it. Worth it in the end though. My teeth look fab. 😁

billysboy · 19/01/2023 17:14

I had a kick in the face from a horse some years ago that resulted in losing teeth as well as root canal on entire right hand side , I had six weeks of being in the dentists chair every day for hours . I had some implants which have been fab but I would love to get the rest of them sorted out ,
Not necessarily veneers but some nice teeth , weighing up my options at the moment

JoonT · 19/01/2023 17:19

Having them whitened is OK. But as with everything people go too far. Rylan Clark, for example (who I really, really like btw) just looks silly.

Livedandlearned · 19/01/2023 17:26

I think marine collagen helps with regrowing gum tissue

RoseThornside · 19/01/2023 17:32

I had whitening trays made about 10 years ago. Very happy with the result. Would like Invisalign but can't afford it.
