AIBU to pronounce Uranus the 'rude' way?

Lochroy · 13/01/2023 21:47

DS aged four is starting to show an interest in space. I have always called the planet Uranus, not dissimilar to saying 'your anus'. DH says it's rude and it should be pronounced differently. I'm sorry I don't know how to write the sound out, but his way is more 'yer' than 'yur' with a different emphasis to avoid the word anus. I think his way sounds mumbled and just like someone not speaking properly.
AIBU?

Is this a serious post?

ofwarren · 13/01/2023 21:49

I pronounce it your way. Others pronounce it urine us don't they? So still rude sounding.

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 13/01/2023 21:49

Erm

Metabigot · 13/01/2023 21:50

So the proper pronunciation is YOUR-a-nuss

The giggling schoolboy pronunciation is Your-Anus

Are you a giggling schoolboy? If so, it's way past bedtime.

thefirstmrsrochester · 13/01/2023 21:51

YABU to be thinking of this never mind posting. Pronounce it how you like. Nobody cares.

denishhol · 13/01/2023 21:52

Ive always pronounced it ur anus. To me this is the correct way of saying it. It sounds more natural as an english speaker.

Metabigot · 13/01/2023 21:52

You win weird thread of the day OP

Lol. Reminds me of when DS came in giggling about it. I assumed he was laughing because he'd heard the old pronunciation. But turned out he thought it hilarious a planet was named after wee.😂

LubaLuca · 13/01/2023 21:56

I say uh-ruh-nus. I'm not sure how to spell how I say it. Uh as in up, ruh as in run. None of the syllables have particular stress on them.

I say Uri (as in Geller) like Uh-ree to. I don't know why I do this, those words just sound nicer like that.

lifeinthehills · 13/01/2023 21:57

I've always pronounced it ur-anus (probably how your husband doesn't like it). That's how it always was growing up too. It's only in recent years I've heard it pronounced more like ur-in-is. It really doesn't matter. Say it how you want.

I've never ever heard it pronounced that way. The UR is always pronounced Y like in yellow

LucyMcAndrew · 13/01/2023 21:58

I always say “yur-anus”, except when talking to DH when I say “Your Anus”.

Lochroy · 13/01/2023 21:59

No, not a giggling schoolboy and yes, a genuine question. Toddle off and do your advanced searches if you need to check.

I don't literally say 'your anus' but I say it with an 'A' rather than softer 'a' sound.

Given mumsnet is normally the helpful font of all knowledge I though it would be the easiest place to get an answer!

It always used to be commonly pronounced 'your-ANUS'. It's only in recent years that we've been told we're naughty and have to say 'URINE-ous' which, as you say, sounds just as rude.

According to an episode of Futurama, many years from now, the 'official' non-rude name will be 'your-ECTUM' Grin

I really don't get some of the po-faced posters upthread - did you not spot a mile off that this was going to be a fun, lighthearted thread? The clue is right there in the title.

Fairislefandango · 13/01/2023 22:01

Your dh might sound mumbly, OP, but there is no reason that the YUR-anus version (favoured by astronomers etc) should sound mumbled. I think it's probably closer to the original Greek pronunciation too.

Lochroy · 13/01/2023 22:02

Ha. Neither of us have made the association with urine before so the next time it comes up I shall take great delight in pointing it out to DH.

Reminds me of an episode of Spitting Image from about a million years ago where they discussed the planet Byoom-holee (spelled Bumhole).

Eh?

It's always been "your anus"

Not once in all my schooling did anyone pronounce it differently.

Outfor150 · 13/01/2023 22:03

The dictionary (Collins) tells you how to pronounce it. There are two acceptable pronunciations. Yours is the first one -(below). Generally, the first one is the more common, but both are fine:
(jʊˈreɪnəs , ˈjʊrənəs)

DysmalRadius · 13/01/2023 22:04

I know several people who work at the European Space Agency who all pronounce it your anus, which is good enough for me!

Did you know it has also has a brownish ring around it and methane in its atmosphere? It's the planetary gift that keeps on giving! 😁

TwoMonthsOff · 13/01/2023 22:04

Patrick Moore said it ‘you’re n’uss’

rather than your anus

not sure if this helps 😭

There's no j in it. I can't work out what those mean

ShinyPikachu · 13/01/2023 22:06

This reminds me of a skit on Jackass many years ago where they went to the town of Mianus (pronounced like "my anus") and asked questions like "are there many people in Mianus?" or "is there much to do in Mianus?" Grin
