AIBU to pronounce Uranus the 'rude' way?

DS aged four is starting to show an interest in space. I have always called the planet Uranus, not dissimilar to saying 'your anus'. DH says it's rude and it should be pronounced differently. I'm sorry I don't know how to write the sound out, but his way is more 'yer' than 'yur' with a different emphasis to avoid the word anus. I think his way sounds mumbled and just like someone not speaking properly.
AIBU?

On a vaguely related note, the fuchsia flower genus was originally named after a German botanist called Leonhart Fuchs, so the common pronunciation in English appears to be somewhat bowdlerised and not accurate at all.

TwoMonthsOff · 13/01/2023 22:06

So what came first ?
the name of the planet
or the name of the back passage 🤔

tulips27 · 13/01/2023 22:07

Do you realise everyone reading this thread is now sitting there mumbling "ur anus" to themselves? 🤭

This is how I remember how to spell it. Fuchs is easier to remember the order of the letters than fuchsia somehow so I just think "Fuchs I A" Smile

That will take years to learn

The dictionary (Collins) tells you how to pronounce it. There are two acceptable pronunciations. Yours is the first one -(below). Generally, the first one is the more common, but both are fine:
(jʊˈreɪnəs , ˈjʊrənəs)

Thank you, but I have no idea how to interpret these!

Did you know it has also has a brownish ring around it and methane in its atmosphere? It's the planetary gift that keeps on giving! 😁

"I am Uranus - I'm an icy gas giant" !

Happyher · 13/01/2023 22:09

It was always pronounced the rude way when I was little. It was only when the population awoke to the fact that ‘anus’ was a word and that it meant arsehole in the 70’s that the BBC started pronouncing it the polite way.

I know several people who work at the European Space Agency who all pronounce it your anus, which is good enough for me!

The arse planet

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/01/2023 22:13

This reminds me of a skit on Jackass many years ago where they went to the town of Mianus (pronounced like "my anus") and asked questions like "are there many people in Mianus?" or "is there much to do in Mianus?"

They should go down to Dorset and try that here (sadly, the 'h' is silent).

The arse planet

If it turns into The Planet of the Grapes, you might need to get some cream for it.

It's always comforting to know that, even with a potentially dry topic such as this, we can still find something interesting to entertain us*

*pronounced 'en-TER-te-nuss'

If you ever watched Shooting Stars OP, you could try pronouncing it in a Vic & Bob style - Oo-rah-noos!

ofwarren · 13/01/2023 21:57

I've never ever heard it pronounced that way. The UR is always pronounced Y like in yellow

It's likely I heard an American saying it more than anyone else when I was growing up. Maybe they say it without the y sound, depending on regional accent?

I have no idea, I'm going to be on one of the 'My mum can't pronounce...' threads one day.

Ooh - that's vaguely familiar in the depths of the memory. I'll give that a whirl next time and see what reaction it gets.

I feel there should be a campaign to pronounce the H. It's just not as fun otherwise. Grin

I think your dh's way is either a) more American or b) more recent, I've noticed it on storybots planets song and other things the kids watch!

atteatimeeverybodyagrees · 13/01/2023 22:06

There's no j in it. I can't work out what those mean

Its the international phonetic alphabet. The sound it makes is the same as the consonant 'y' in yellow.

GoodVibesHere · 13/01/2023 22:35

Well it's no big deal either way, I mean it's not like you're going to be saying it all day every day.

I don't recall ever saying it. I guess it just never came up in a conversation.
