To let Dc play switch in a Michelin star restaurant?

Dc is 7yo. I was supposed to be going for a 6 course tasting tomorrow evening but due to my friend’s childcare issues (her dh was supposed to be having her dc plus my 7yo for a sleepover but he’s got Covid) she had to cancel. It was booked using a voucher and as it’s such short notice if we don’t go tomorrow the voucher will be cancelled.

The restaurant have said they’re fine with dc coming as long as he isn’t disruptive. Dc is generally pretty well behaved but I’ve eaten at this restaurant before and the whole thing takes a good 2.5 hours. I think he would actually enjoy the food and the experience but obviously it’s a long time for a 7yo to sit still and be relatively quiet. If I let him play with his switch if he starts to get a bit fidgety he is absolutely guaranteed to be quiet. He got a new Pokémon game for it for Christmas and is obsessed with it.

If you went out for a posh meal would you be irritated if there was a kid playing switch there? I don’t know if I’m being really selfish to consider it but it was a really expensive voucher and I do like food.

He’d be playing it on silent, obviously

Wouldn't care as long as it was silent!

TwoPointFourCatsAndDogs · 06/01/2023 22:40

It wouldn’t bother me at all.

Burnamer · 06/01/2023 22:41

If the game was silent and he was quiet I’d be ok with it.

DuplicateUserName · 06/01/2023 22:41

Do they come with headphones?

RandomUsernameHere · 06/01/2023 22:41

YANBU that wouldn't bother me in the slightest

BananaSpanner · 06/01/2023 22:41

I’d rather a kid playing silently on a switch than getting bored and silly.

PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 06/01/2023 22:41

Why does anyone elses opinion matter?
as long as silent or ear plugs, who cares. Will the other child have to go to tho?

ChampagneLassie · 06/01/2023 22:42

As long as its silent or he has headphones fine

PuttingDownRoots · 06/01/2023 22:42

No noises, headphones, sitting at table not running around... tbh id barely notice he was there.

SeenAndNot · 06/01/2023 22:43

Better that than him being disruptive.

TheFlis12345 · 06/01/2023 22:48

If it’s silent I doubt I would even notice! I would be too busy with the food.

Todaynotalways · 06/01/2023 22:48

I wouldn't mind a kid playing silently, or indeed chatting with their parents, or colouring, or whatever - as long as they're not causing a disturbance.

GoneToday · 06/01/2023 22:48

Yanbu - no problem.
I don’t understand the vote result saying 68%YABU when everyone has agreed in the comments YANBU.

MavisMcMinty · 06/01/2023 22:49

As everyone else (so far) has said, it wouldn’t bother me at all as long as the sound was off. And I don’t mean via earphones either, as the tinny sound from them is possibly even worse. Sounds like a brilliant experience, I envy you both!

NapoliTutti · 06/01/2023 22:49

As long as its on silent cant see it being an issue at all.

Abraxan · 06/01/2023 22:52

No problem at all if no noise from the machine, and he's sensible, sat down and not making unnecessary loud noises.

But that applies to all adults too - no one wants to hear your loud voices, have you wandering all over and being stupid. And yes, that includes the over loud fake laughs, etc. to be honest you get worse behaviour from adults than you do from children in plenty of places!

You're bound to get some people who silently judge 'how dare they let him play video games whilst here' but they are highly unlikely to say it out loud to you. So ignore, and enjoy your meal.

Overthebow · 06/01/2023 22:54

As long as it's on silent it's fine. It's people who let children play or watch videos with the volume on without headphones that annoy everyone.

gigglinggirl · 06/01/2023 22:56

Absolutely fine, as long as you’re willing to jump ship if he doesn’t sit quietly. Good luck!

WandaWonder · 06/01/2023 22:57

I don't understand why it would be a problem? (not aiming that at the op)

Ponderingwindow · 06/01/2023 22:59

Silent or headphones would be fine

MaryShelley1818 · 06/01/2023 23:01

Absolutely no problem on silent x

ChristmasTensions · 06/01/2023 23:03

It’s totally fine! Go for it. As long as the game has no sound at all.

Suprima · 06/01/2023 23:04

i like seeing children out to dinner in nice restaurants.

he might surprise you! a tasting menu and lots of new things presented wonderfully may keep him occupied for longer than you think.

but if he needs the switch, it honestly wouldn’t bother me as long as the sound was turned off and brightness down (if the place has dimmed lighting)

thaegumathteth · 06/01/2023 23:06

Wouldn't bother me. Kids very rarely annoy me as much as adults do tbh except my own they are vv annoying
