OffredsNose · 01/01/2023 18:25

DH wants a leather sofa because of the dog. I think they look old fashioned? Can they ever look modern?

YABU - nothing wrong with a leather suite
YANBU - they look minging

Different colours??? Who wants a pink leather sofa? Pink velvet maybe...

Didn’t see a pink leather one when we were in DFS. Pink velvet? My Nan had that. 😂

woodhill · 01/01/2023 20:45

I really like mine and it's easy to keep clean

Purpleavocado · 01/01/2023 20:47

I love mine from Sofology, its insanely comfortable. I do tuck a throw into it because of the cat. It's really easy to clean, about 8 years old so far.

I love my leather sofas. We got them in the January sales last year. They’re not everyone’s taste, but I like furniture that’s a bit different. We got a three seater and a two seater and they’re very comfy to curl up on.

Old fashioned or classic?

As for being cold/hot/sticky etc. Only if it's cheap composite leather. Proper hides are not like this.

Mind you, I wouldn't be spending that kind of money on a dog sofa so... 🤷‍♀️

Merryoldgoat · 01/01/2023 21:03

@VenusClapTrap

I LOVE that!!

@banivani Very nice but I’d prefer a wider arm.

I got a Calia Italia leather from Costco online three years ago and can’t fault it. Huge leap of faith though buying leather and not even getting to try it out

Yes I think the armrests might be uncomfortable, that’s why we have to go and check it out. But I’m keeping such an open mind now and really looking at all sofas after being so surprised by that fancy one before. That one had quite narrow armrests too but was great to sit in.

Leather sofas stick to your legs in summer and they also fart a lot all year round. I've seen dreadful rashes too from chemicals they are treated with.

HoneyDragon · 01/01/2023 22:24

I had leather sofas and a dog. And then I had leather sofas held together with gaffa tape until I could replace them with well scotch guarded fabrics ones that her claws couldn’t fuck up.

AddictedToBooks · 01/01/2023 22:57

We've got a leather Chesterfield sofa and we love it, yet the leather sofa we had before that did make the room look very old-fashioned.
Even though a Chesterfield is an old design, it makes our room look cosy and we have cushions and a throw on it and it's perfect for snuggling into and I never find it cold or sticky.
Love nothing more than snuggling up with my dogs and a book - but that's something your DH needs to be aware of - claws and leather aren't a good mix and even though our dogs don't use the sofa as a canine trampoline, it has got a couple of surface scratches on it.

harrassedmumto3 · 01/01/2023 22:59

I couldn't go back to one after having fabric. They're so cold!

MyOtherCarIsAHearse · 01/01/2023 23:00

I love ours. It’s very modern looking — bright red corner sofa. Super comfy. And we have a dog.

HoneyDragon · 01/01/2023 23:16

Canine trampolining 🤣 that’s what destroyed mine as i made the mistake of moving it in front of a window. Before then the dog never really noticed the sofa ….then it was a cat barking at platform.

I agree.
A proper thick hide rather than coated which cheaper ones are, are neither hot, cold or sticky and looked after properly will last forever.

We've had our leather sofa for 20 years now. I don't think it looks dated, just classic. it's seen us through the trials and tribulations of two kids, numerous spillages and a kitchen extension where it happened to be in the way of a builder that was a little over-enthusiastic with a sledge hammer.

Never found it too hot or too cold either, and it's kept its shape.

(It wasn't cheap though: found it lurking in the corner of a Department store, wrapped in plastic as a returned order. Got a heavy discount on it - think it was £1300 with the discount when we bought it).

RiverFlowers · 01/01/2023 23:24

This is weirdly interesting as I have always thought of fabric sofas as being "old fashioned"! We have always had leather sofas - but now we have young children and pets the leather is starting to wear - although, I am not sure how much better a fabric sofa would have survived either!!

Maybe I will consider a fabric sofa for our next one!

Lucyccfc68 · 01/01/2023 23:29

It all depends on the style (regardless of leather or fabric) as to whether the sofa is modern, traditional or old fashioned.

I have a very modern Italian leather sofa and it’s is neither too cold, sweaty or gives me a rash. It’s extremely comfortable.

I don’t have a dog, but a friend had a leather sofa, which got scratched to pieces by her dog. I’m not sure leather sofa’s and dogs mix, unless the dog is very well behaved and doesn’t jump all over it (but that would go for any sofa)

RandomMess · 01/01/2023 23:33

We have a dog she never scratched the sofa despite jumping on and off it all day!

woodhill · 02/01/2023 09:44

Mine has been brilliant. It is comfortable and the leather was good quality

It is a bit saggy where I sit one end

statetrooperstacey · 02/01/2023 10:09

We got rid of our leather sofa because although it was easy to keep surface clean it retained the dog smell, a lot. We then got fabric sofas which we could wash some of the covers. Even with throws they got filthy and needed washing a lot, so we have just got new sofas Which the dogs are not allowed on.

we have kept an old sofa just for them which is working quite well as we now have people sofas that you can sit in without fear of getting covered in hair. We are lucky we have a big room though . So basically it’s been an ongoing battle in this house!😁 nothing is ideal!

Bywayofanupdate · 02/01/2023 10:12

I don't like leather sofas, find them really uncomfortable as others have sai, you stick to them in summer and they're cold in winter. We have a throw for our dog on the sofa, he knows he's not allowed up until we've put his throw down

maeveiscurious · 02/01/2023 10:20

We have one it's comfortable and practical we have with cushions and throws it's great

maeveiscurious · 02/01/2023 10:22
