Leather Sofa?

OffredsNose · 01/01/2023 18:25

DH wants a leather sofa because of the dog. I think they look old fashioned? Can they ever look modern?

YABU - nothing wrong with a leather suite
YANBU - they look minging

@DelphiniumBlue agree completely uncomfortable in every season. Dogs shouldn't be on sofa anyway

RandomMess · 01/01/2023 19:50

I don't understand this "uncomfortable in every season" I've never found it too hot or cold to sit on but have found plenty of fabric ones itchy.

ChicagoBears · 01/01/2023 19:51

I’m going to switch from a fabric sofa to a leather vintage tan corner. It looks pretty modern but eye watering at 8k! Easier to clean with DC though.

RuthW · 01/01/2023 19:51

I'd never have anything else. They always look good.

Zanatdy · 01/01/2023 19:52

I don’t like them as they are cold but we got one when DS2 was a baby as he vomited a lot. Laminate floor and leather sofa. It saved us, but now I always buy fabric. I have a dog too, and if you get a dark one it’s fine. And my dog is the king of mud. I wouldn’t get another

My leather sofa has lasted 17 years and has been abused by my kids and the cat. Sadly the cat has picked it to death on one end otherwise it would still be going strong. I have the Land of Leather style recliner ones ( showing my age here I think) that they still seem to sell in places like dfs. Ours was a lovely soft Italian leather from Next. They still sell the same sofa style but ours is dark brown which is dated in colour. I'm just looking at a replacement and can't bring myself to buy a light grey fabric sofa that will last a week before someone stains it.

ReginaPerrin · 01/01/2023 20:03

Love my leather sofas. Easy to clean, never stain, and comfy as anything. Throws help with cold legs in winter and sticky legs in summer. I’d never have anything other than leather now.

StrawberryWater · 01/01/2023 20:04

I have two in my front reception room. They’re so squishy and comfortable. They look nice and suit the style of the room which is full of books (7 floor to ceiling bookshelves). Love them.

Festivez · 01/01/2023 20:07

Love our leather sofa don't think they are outdated at all so practical I wipe it down it's over 10 years old still going.
I personally don't like the fabric sofas they always look scabby after a while but everyone has different preferences.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2023 20:08

Nothing wrong with leather sofas. Wouldn’t want dogs on the furniture whatever it was made of though.
Go and have a look around DFS. There’s loads of modern leather sofas with USB ports, cup holders and lights. How modern do you want? 😂

Mammyloveswine · 01/01/2023 20:09

How are they old fashioned? They are timeless!! And much easier to keep looking nice!

MaisyMary77 · 01/01/2023 20:13

I’ve got a ‘Sloane’, leather sofa from Darlings of Chelsea. It’s over 10 years old and still going strong. My dogs cuddle up on it with me every evening. It’s really easy to clean, extremely comfortable and still looks good.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 01/01/2023 20:13

I can't lounge on a leather sofa, they're too slippery. They're also cold .
Throws slip off them too.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2023 20:15

I’m currently lounging on a leather sofa. It’s all good. 😃

Caspianberg · 01/01/2023 20:21

Ours is brushed recycled leather. It’s really soft and warm to touch not like those cold plastic leather you used to get.

In the shops when we bought 2 years ago many were like this.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 01/01/2023 20:21

DH wanted one and I gave in. I hate it. No-one sits on it because it's so slippery and uncomfortable. People and throws slide off it. It's just a big brown monstrosity. I keep trying to get the kids to take it but no-one wants it, even for free . I like a sofa with a removable cotton cover.

Mum5net · 01/01/2023 20:23

@banivani Very nice but I’d prefer a wider arm.

I got a Calia Italia leather from Costco online three years ago and can’t fault it. Huge leap of faith though buying leather and not even getting to try it out

Overitallnow · 01/01/2023 20:23

They are very dated.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2023 20:25

They are very dated.

There’s such a huge variety of colours and styles so that’s a bit of a weird thing to say. Some could be regarded as old fashioned but others are very modern. Confused

Personally I think they're really old fashioned too! Also, why would leather be more dog friendly? Surely a fabric one that you can clean easily would be better, less dated (imo) and dog friendly. I've only seen leather sofas in peoples homes with cracks / wear patches / animal scratches on so I might be biased! Friends with dogs who have fabric sofas have ones that look better than those with dogs and leather sofas.

Our old leather sofa still looked new after 17 years. No cracks, scratches or worn patches, although our dog didn’t sit on the sofa, maybe that’s why?
Fabric ones absorb smell. It’s hideous sitting down on someone’s sofa and having the stench from it rise up and envelope you!

I miss my leather sofa.

Hairybaker · 01/01/2023 20:36

Look at the Thor by Dfs.
we have never found leather to be hot in summer or cold in winter.

Mentalpiece · 01/01/2023 20:37

My leather sofa is over thirty years old and still looks great. I chose a classic design and quite frankly, I don't give a monkeys what anyone else thinks of it. 🙂

Overitallnow · 01/01/2023 20:38

Different colours??? Who wants a pink leather sofa? Pink velvet maybe...

My dogs aren't allowed on the furniture.
No cracks or tears etc on mine as I clean them weekly with leather cleaner and twice a year with dodo juice.
