Im fed up seeing celebrities posting pictures from somewhere gorgeous

I know its stupid. Ive had this hacking cold and congestion since Xmas. Its everywhere. The weather in Scotland has been shite, pouring rain ,damp, sleet, just awful. Im desperately trying to keep an eye on the heating, the never ending washing, cooking etc etc. I work in retail so am not off for 2 weeks.

Id just love a holiday. We haven't been away in 6 years, 7 years now its 2023. Id love to feel the sun on my back. It wont happen for a long time. I know there's much worse things happening for millions of people and i feel bad moaning.

But why do celebrities need to post about their brilliant new years do's, all dressed up somewhere warm. Im sick of them. I know i dont need to look at the DM but you get sucked in. I just wish it was me sometimes.

I guess im just fed up.

Same boat! Not been anywhere since 2014. Not even left the town I live in since I moved here 3 years ago!

It’s shit. But I’m not pissed off at them really. I’m pissed off at myself and my poor life choices that have led me to be sitting in a freezing house in a shithole.

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 11:03

What I object to in some cases is where they are. Places where women other than tourists are treated like dirt, where same sex relationships are illegal, where those in the service industries are paid a pittance etc.

I've got someone on my social media who has posted her annual new year bragging list "I've been on 9 holidays this year, 4 weekends away, 27 gigs, 4 music festivals, 7 theatre trips..." and my first thought was "oh fuck off!" It always feels off to me but this year it feels particularly tone deaf.

Of course, we are being unreasonable. It's wonderful that friends and random celebrities can have all of these amazing experiences and why shouldn't they show off and post their pictures? But it still feels spectacularly shit for the rest of us who can't go anywhere.

So yes OP, YABU but so am I. I'd love to go on just one holiday a year and just one fun theatre/gig trip. I guess we're all different. Maybe if we had their money and never had to struggle, maybe we'd be bragging on social media. I don't think they do it on purpose, I think they genuinely don't realise that it's tone deaf and that a lot of people aren't in their financial position.

Thanks and the same to you

I think it’s just plain daft to look at pictures of celebs if you feel like this.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 01/01/2023 11:37

I just think it's poor taste to brag on social media full stop. It's not just celebs, I came off social media ages ago and feel so much better for it.

so don’t go on it🙄
that’s what social media is all about🤷‍♀️

Fairyliz · 01/01/2023 11:39

I’m another one saying step away from these posts if you are feeling down.
Watch a funny film on tv or look at cute cat videos instead.
It never helps comparing yourself to others.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 01/01/2023 11:41

@kitcat15 it's not for bragging. It used to be for families and friends staying in touch and as I clearly said I don't use any of it anymore.
Clearly your one who uses it as a brag fest. Grin

Jimboscott0115 · 01/01/2023 11:42

If you're talking about the middle east, or even in some cases the far east, and these are minor celebrities or 'influencers' then there is a very good chance that Yachting is involved.

They get lots of amazing holidays and pictures etc free of charge, their host gets to have a gorgeous girl with them for a period of time and do (almost) what they want with them.

It's ridiculously common and there's been quite a lot of exposés about them in the last couple of years - including an influencer agreeing to do things with a camel for 10s of thousands of £

GCAcademic · 01/01/2023 11:43

I don't see any of this, because I don't follow any of these people and only make limited use of social media.

I highly recommend it.

Rinders · 01/01/2023 11:50

This is where you can gain some control. Filter what you look at. I’ve felt pretty lonely over the Christmas period - it’s pretty much been just the DC and me. I knew that I would feel hypersensitive to others having big family/social gatherings and so I’ve not looked on Insta, barely looked at FB, etc. it really has helped and ensured I haven’t fed into my tendency for self-pity.

Happy new year to you OP. I do hope you can get away at some point - it sounds just what you need.

Iamthewombat · 01/01/2023 12:00

Because they are desperate to stay relevant, poor eejits. Imagine being like that. Christ.

Remember me? MEEEE? I was on Love Island four years ago, yes, it’s me, last seen at that promotional launch for the new flavour of WKD in August? I fancy going on Celebrity Caravanning with Les Dennis on ITV Be. That is why Imwant you to like my post. Please. Please.

Or they’re having a great time and they’re using social media in the same way as millions of others.

People also post photos of themselves on holiday whilst not having major ‘real life’ problems.

I’m not sure that ripping the object of the envy to pieces, for real or imagined reasons, is a cure for said envy. Seeing someone happy and indulging in wishful thinking as to how they’re really secretly miserable isn’t exactly a great trait.

AgentJohnson · 01/01/2023 12:12

Why not? I’m not on SM so don’t see these posts but even if I did I wouldn’t care less. OP you are in control over your SM feeds and it isn’t the responsibility of others to make you feel good about yourself. I’m sorry you are struggling but pointing the finger and blaming others won’t change your circumstances.

lljkk · 01/01/2023 12:18

I don't see pics of celebrities on holiday. I'm on Facebook, MN, Twitter & other social media all the time, some Instagram, occasional Reddit & tabloid browses, physical paper tabloids, yet I never see or notice those pictures. It's amazing how easy it is to modify our social media feed to only be what we want to see.

lljkk · 01/01/2023 12:19

I’m not on SM

For the Billionth time, MUMSNET IS SOCIAL MEDIA.

whattodo1975 · 01/01/2023 12:20

If you were on holiday now, would you post a picture on social media? Or would you stop and think this might upset people at who have a shit life?

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 12:23

@whattodo1975 I would not post a photo as I don't want to advertise my absence to burglars.

Oooh have I touched a nerve? Are you Dawn Ward? Lauren Goodger? Someone who was on Love Island four years ago?

People say this all the time but the Mumsnet side of social media (forum based) is very different to platforms like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. You know what the OP means.

Because they get paid toor get the holiday for free in return for advertising

I’m all of them, combined into one great monolithic entity that inhabits the #carribean tag on Instagram. Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair.

Nope though, neither a reality tv alumni nor touched of nerve, I’m just bemused at the suggestion that envy is an emotion that needs indulging. Those people you scorn are just getting on with their lives without a thought for you, whereas you’re giving them headspace and being bitter about it on mumsnet. The latter doesn’t seem to be obvious as the preferable position tbh.

TrentCrimm · 01/01/2023 12:51

The OP hasn't mentioned social media. They've actively sought this out, by looking at the Daily Mail.
