To boil and bake the ham even though it's one or the other on the packet?

Or shall I just bake it

I always think it tastes better boiled then baked.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 30/12/2022 16:49

It’s fine to do both.

TuxedoJunction · 30/12/2022 16:50

i always boil (normally in cola) then bake it with treacle/cloves/mustard powder on.

user147283179 · 30/12/2022 16:50

Definitely do both.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 30/12/2022 16:50

So if cooking time is an hour shall I boil for half and hour ( in Coke) then finish it off with the glaze.

Ham in coke every time …. Or cherry coke/dr pepper….

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 30/12/2022 16:50

For half an hour

Sprig1 · 30/12/2022 16:51

Yes, just do half and half.

SarahAndQuack · 30/12/2022 16:51

What weight is it? I would think half an hour wouldn't be long enough for any flavour to penetrate far. I wouldn't boil but would simmer slowly for longer. Then you're just popping it in the oven for a few minutes to let the glaze go crisp.

Useitorloseit · 30/12/2022 16:51

Personally I would boil for the full hour then glaze so it's nice and tender.

MrsMontyD · 30/12/2022 16:52

I would boil it for the time it says on the pack and then glaze it in the oven for an additional time, say 10 minutes then glaze again and 10 minutes.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 30/12/2022 16:52

I part boil, part bake. But I don’t like it too sweet so just use water. I then use the ham water to parboil the potatoes before roasting.

Coffeaddict · 30/12/2022 16:52

I do both. Agree with pp regarding coke to boil and then cover in marmalade to pop in oven for 30 min 😋

jeaux90 · 30/12/2022 16:52

Boil for an hour then bake for 30 mins. Depends on the weight though.

SarahAndQuack · 30/12/2022 16:55

Oh, and FWIW, I like it boiled in cider, with halved onions and apples in the pan (to add flavour but also to take up space so you need less liquid). That's not as sweet as coke but not bland.

Wine4whine · 30/12/2022 16:55

I slow cook in cola, onion and carrot for about 5 hours then glaze and roast for 15 mins, glaze again, roast again for 15 mins

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 30/12/2022 17:01

It's just a cheap joint unfortunately everything was sold out so it's boiling now in Coke and water weight is 1.5 kg.

After an hour I will pop it into oven with a glaze..

I always boil and then glaze in the oven

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 30/12/2022 17:02

Sarah that sounds lovely for next time!

SomethingOriginal2 · 30/12/2022 17:03

You boil in in cola then bake with maple syrup and wholegrain mustard. It is the only correct way.

I would boil it for the time it says on the pack and then glaze it in the oven for an additional time, say 10 minutes then glaze again and 10 minutes.

That's pretty much what I do.

SarahAndQuack · 30/12/2022 17:11

Sure it will be delicious! Enjoy!

TwilightSkies · 30/12/2022 17:13

I put it in the slow cooker with cola for about 10-12 hours then pour glaze over it and pop it in the oven. Perfect!

WhatNoRaisins · 30/12/2022 17:22

Agree with PP, the baking part is just to get the nice finish and doesn't take long.

DiamondApricot · 30/12/2022 17:25

I'm attempting ham in coke for the first time on new year's day, does anyone know if braising red cabbage in the coke/ham juice works? Sorry to hijack!
