I will admit I know little about fashion. Hearing all the glowing tributes has made me wonder what effect she had (that I'm not aware of).
My recollection is of that talk show where the audience laughed at her creations and she had a strop - but there must be more to the story than that?

What's with all this 'who she shagged' crap??! Unbelievable. She hugely influenced fashion, reinvigorated Harris Tweed and never compromised. A true icon. Even if you think she was someone you wouldn't want to work for, you can't deny she's left behind an amazing legacy and never gave a f**k what people thought of her.

IrisCosyCottage · 30/12/2022 20:04

Yy it's like the Andrew Tate incels are hanging about.

Phew. A woman who was hugely successful and influential dies and is torn down by (presumably) other women. How lovely.

Yes. I can’t believe some of the comments. I’m not British but I would have thought you would all be so proud of her legacy.

When I think of her designs I think of her era of nipped in waists and bustles, yes a period look but she modernised it and gave it an edge. Also tartan and draping.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 30/12/2022 20:09

Way over my budget but I loved her asymmetric tartan jackets with the big collars. I used to have a TopShop rip-off version in my youth!

Datinghellscape · 30/12/2022 20:09

She was incredible at her craft but she did shag Malcolm McLaren, and had a child with him, and they did together create punk.

willstarttomorrow · 30/12/2022 20:12

She was an absolute force in this world- even if you do not understand her influence or 'get' her as a designer, it says a lot about a poster who can be so negative about someone who has literally just died and is so well respected in her field. Just a quick google tells you about her background, her influence and how she remained a force for good in a world of mediocre. I doubt those who post so negatively have contributed so much or left such a legacy.

whumpthereitis · 30/12/2022 20:14

two of my favourite designers died this year. Mugler in January, Vivienne Westwood in December.

I have a few of her pieces. Her shapes were, are, amazing. Striking to look at, and so flattering when worn. She had a fantastic eye and creative talent.

Some of these remarks are just so silly, I don't know where to start. Even a quick read of her obituaries or the front page of the Mail would tell you she was an extremely successful businesswoman, who made clothes that thousands, or tens of thousands have loved wearing. She doesn't have to have 'changed everyday fashion' to have been highly successful, although you could argue her stunning corset dresses, punk fashion etc have had their influence. She left a company worth £50 million, a property empire worth £18 million and £150 million fortune on top of that- she isn't just some woman who once shagged someone famous, she had her own very successful life of her own. Two sons with successful careers in fashion as well. What is it with people on here.

Quite!

IrisCosyCottage · 30/12/2022 20:19

Her draping was amazing and as a PP said her pattern cutting must have been very impressive.
I wonder what will happen to the label now. It will be interesting to see the direction it takes.

TheHateIsNotGood · 30/12/2022 20:20

Vivienne Westward turned what many punks wore (bin bags and safety pins) into wearable and iconic fashion items that still influence to this day.

The Tartan was genius given the Bay City Rollers were still around.

Excuse me ladies of MN but you are being a bunch of ageist, sexist cunts - she was older than the punks she fraternized with and if you think she shagged John Lydon (nee Rotten) go ask him, he'll probably so no; he was hardly a design/fashion genius but by golly he's a 'Living Legend' with his own talents.

Vivienne was a great designer and maker of clothes.

Meseekslookatme · 30/12/2022 20:25

I always dreamed I'd get married in one of her dresses, the people saying she was talentless are just being mean for the sake of it.
Unfortunately people can't bear a successful woman.
She was an incredibly successful and talented woman.

Floisme · 30/12/2022 20:36

She also did it all with no formal training, while raising two children pretty much on her own.

Puppylucky · 30/12/2022 20:36

@TheHateIsNotGood
Totally agree. To take street fashion and create an iconic design look not once but multiple times is amazing. As well as Punk she created Buffalo Girls and the Pirate Look -all led by music /street - before moving into couture designs but never lost her design integrity. I never owned any Westwood but she created the image of a woman I so wanted to be (looking at you Sarah Stockbridge) .
She was brave and clever and totally herself. Boudoir is also the sexiest perfume I've ever smelt so cheers for that Viv!

TheRealShedSadie · 30/12/2022 20:37

She could create beautiful clothes that flatter every woman.

I have a VW wool and pvc coat, worn in my 30’s and 40’s and I’ll be wearing it into my 50’s too. It’s completely gorgeous, never dates and has that hard to achieve quality of being both classic and just a bit edgy.

She was an incredible creative force.

DetalMetector · 30/12/2022 21:12

her talent made England look like a proper place

that’s a fantastic epitaph from TotteringBlankly so fucking true.
Yes- a 70s England riffing creatively on the bleakness and anarchic and inventive DIY Punk culture, then 80s New Romantics and their historical costume references and then the poised and tailored but cheeky witty side of the 90s glamorous decadent club culture. Beautiful work full of historical and political references.

JaneTheVirgin · 30/12/2022 14:09

She didn't. But she died so we have to pretend for a few days.

Do you often use bitchiness to cover up your lack of knowledge about something?

Googlecanthelpme · 30/12/2022 21:27

Not sure if anyone has said it but without VW there would have been no Alexander McQueen for sure. Or at least not in the way he was.

Witchcraftandhokum · 30/12/2022 21:46

The treatment of women by other women on this site is fucking shameful.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 30/12/2022 21:55

God, I’d forgotten my floppy pirate boots, oversized blouses (with huge, frilled, collars) and knickerbockers. Viva La Viv.

Maximo2 · 30/12/2022 22:20

You only have to look at any thread about Madonna to see what MNers think of aging successful women. Baffling.

StaunchMomma · 30/12/2022 22:28

daisyjgrey · 30/12/2022 21:23

Absolutely no need for this.

We're talking about one of the most famous designers of the last 30 years.

Her legacy will last.

Tearing others down for no reason just makes you look pathetic.

IClaudine · 30/12/2022 23:32

Browsing through the current dresses on the VW site and I really want this! Sadly not in stock in my size as well as being out of my budget.

@StaunchMomma

What? I know. That was my point in the first place?!

TvGorge · 31/12/2022 04:35

TheHateIsNotGood whilst I agree with your general sentiments I find it a tad annoying that you address us as ‘Ladies’ patronisingly and then call some of the women on here ‘cunts’ (and not in a complimentary way). I too agree that there’s some shitty disrespect going on but you’re not living up to your MN name.

And I’m still aghast at how people keep referring to who she shagged and had children with as if that impacted in any way on her talent and unique creativity.
