I will admit I know little about fashion. Hearing all the glowing tributes has made me wonder what effect she had (that I'm not aware of).
My recollection is of that talk show where the audience laughed at her creations and she had a strop - but there must be more to the story than that?

That's not my recollection at all. As I remember, she wasn't financially successful or taken seriously in Britain for a long time.

Her OBE is from 30 years ago. Obviously I don't have her company accounts 😂

Floisme · 30/12/2022 19:01

I believe the business struggled in the 90s.

Well that’s true, and really the point I was trying to make.

Okay, but it seems an odd point to make in 2022 and just looks like you want to criticise a successful business after the owner died.

Saucery · 30/12/2022 19:12

If I ever think of Malcolm MacLaren I think “cheap margarine” and “one of VW’s boyfriends”. Not the other way round Grin

Remainiac · 30/12/2022 19:15

I had a pair of Anglomania jeans and a couple of t shirts. The jeans were probably the most comfortable trousers I’ve ever worn- looked a funny shape on the hanger but amazing on the body. I covet a suit. Carrie in Sex and the City wears a Westwood wedding dress to her wedding with the most amazing headdress- stunning.

StaunchMomma · 30/12/2022 19:17

She dressed the Sex Pistols and influenced an entire scene. She was a no-bullshit woman who said what she thought and refused to bow down to anyone. That's enough for me but there were also so many beautiful creations over the years - the corsets, the androgyny, the jewellery, those stunning black men's kilts....

You don't have to tear something down because you're not interested in it.

Millions of people admired her and they are allowed to say that.

She was also in the office practically every day unlike a lot of other ‘designers ‘ !!

If you’re talking about Countrylife butter, that was John Lydon, not Malcolm McClaren.

EmmaAgain22 · 30/12/2022 19:23

I can't seem to link to it
but the pinstriped suit Carrie wore while she was drunk at Vogue...is that Westwood?

DetalMetector · 30/12/2022 19:26

For me her references to c18th and c19th historical fashion and the romance of it really stuck out. I don’t know too much about her life but she clearly either studied art history or liked a wander through the National Gallery. The end result in the clothes was beautiful. I liked her visual references.

DetalMetector · 30/12/2022 19:27

She definitely influenced 90s glam house club culture

reesewithoutaspoon · 30/12/2022 19:32

Went to a Westwood exhibition and the clothes were beautiful. Her tailoring and draping was exquisite and really flattering to womens bodies. There was a black taffeta opera dress that was just stunning. There was some of her earlier designs which I remembered seeming so way out at the time just looking like many modern fashion. She was years ahead of her time and influenced loads of designers
I coveted her beautifully tailored tweed

grayhairdontcare · 30/12/2022 19:33

She knew how to dress all women's bodies and that it's a true talent

Floisme · 30/12/2022 19:33

Absolutely not, quite the opposite. I adore Vivienne Westwood and was trying to challenge challenging the narrative that she got rich on the back of the punk movement and then sold out. I believe she struggled for a number of years after splitting from McLaren during which time she was taken far more seriously in Europe - held her shows in Paris and Italy and took work in Vienna. She succeeded after a real struggle and against a lot of odds and it pisses me off to see it implied that she got lucky.

When styled by Viv… SJP was worn by the dress in the movie.

But when styled by VW and the cape was added? Heaven sent.

Windbeneathmybingowings · 30/12/2022 19:49

If you aren’t in to fashion or maybe don’t look very closely at where what you are wearing has come from, then you probably haven’t seen her or understood where her influence lies.

Take logo tops with pics of the queen on / diamanté stuck on crowns over prints. You might see these in matalan or F&F and pick them up, think oh I’ve seen lots of people wearing these and not give it much more thought. But essentially that has come from a designer and diluted down to the mainstream.

This dress

It hangs and fits terribly

Datinghellscape · 30/12/2022 19:50

She shagged Malcolm McLaren and the two of them created punk

Like a 1970s version of where babies come from

Puppylucky · 30/12/2022 19:51

@borntobequiet Sorry that's utter bollocks. As someone who was involved in the Punk movement she did more than anyone to create the aesthetic.Yes she took some of the Punk insignia such as safety pins and tartan but it was Viv that created the iconic Punk look

Adviceneeded200 · 30/12/2022 19:57

Her work and style was individual.

She always looked stylish when wearing what I would look like a mess if I did - I wouldnt underestimate that. A sort of colourful Helena Bonham Carter!

I bet her pattern skills were amazing to create the fashion that she did.

Her work was whacky but confident, colourful and exploratory, that in turn, influences the High Street, albeit in a more toned down way.

No, we were wearing that stuff years before.

borntobequiet · 30/12/2022 19:59

And listening to the awful music.

IrisCosyCottage · 30/12/2022 20:00

The misogyny on this thread is off the scale.
She was instrumental in the creation of the punk aesthetic and the Sex Pistols. She consistently campaigned throughout her life. Her designs were very female-centred from subverting and challenging the traditional male gaze, to ready-to-wear lines that were comfortable, flattering and long-lasting. I have a few VW dresses and they look as amazing now as when I bought them over a decade ago.
