Is there any way the I am not Peri yet, at the age of 53?

Posting here for traffic. I'm 53 years old, and still having regular periods. I have had no symptoms of Perimenopause. Is this normal? Is it possible that I haven't even started Peri yet? No sweats, no mood swings. The only thing I've noticed, is that it's now 5 weeks between periods, rather than 4. I was really hoping they would have stopped by now! I can't ask my Mum, as she's passed, although I think from memory, that she was menopausal at 51. Just realised that my next period is due when I'm on holiday, what a pain!

Average age is 45-55 so it’s very possible you haven’t yet. Annoying, but good for your bones 😂

Aquamarine1029 · 29/12/2022 15:34

I would say you are absolutely in Peri, just with very mild symptoms being that your periods are now further apart.

You're lucky so far. Some women have horric peri-menopause, but some don't.

fancyacuppatea · 29/12/2022 15:37

Just be grateful, mine were only ever 26 days apart. 🤦‍♀️
Don't wish yourself there.
I'm 50 and all hell broke loose at about 45...been up and down since (so thankful for the 3month gaps last summer and this).
Similar age to my late M.

fancyacuppatea · 29/12/2022 15:38

Oh, just to say I'm not jealous - oh no. Not a bit. 😒

RunLolaRun102 · 29/12/2022 15:40

My gran had 2 babies between 49-53 and didn’t go into peri until 55. Her periods properly stopped at 60. It’s fairly commonplace in if you’re not white.

Hbh17 · 29/12/2022 15:41

My periods stopped when I was 56. I have no idea what "peri" is - possibly something made up to try to persuade women that there is something wrong with them. But you can certainly not be menopausal until well into your 50s.

isthismylifenow · 29/12/2022 15:42

I'm sure you are in peri just with very few symptoms. Sounds like you might be one of the lucky ones who just stop their period one day. Peri starts about 10 years before menopause.

I'm 52, and know I'm in peri as my gynae confirmed it... I have some, but very few eggs remaining. I haven't had a hot flush, the sweats etc, but I did have pretty ridiculous mood swings.

Im on hrt now and it's helped the mood swings, but also as im high risk for oestoporosis.

It does affect woman differently.

Ericaequites · 29/12/2022 15:46

I’m 52, overwhelmingly English and Irish genetically, and still menstruate every 28-29 days like a clock without hot flashes. My much older sister and mother were finished by my age. My internist says leading a healthier life is responsible for this.

ColdHandsHotHead · 29/12/2022 15:47

Are you sleeping the same as usual? My first symptom was buggered up sleep.

Peri is very real

Aprilx · 29/12/2022 15:50

I am 52 and haven’t had a period for about three years now. I have never really had any symptoms, it was a total non event for me. The first signs of something happening was my periods becoming lighter and longer in between (always 28-30 days apart regular as clockwork previously).

MerryChristmasTree · 29/12/2022 15:51

Wtf?

Of course peri menopause isn’t made up. Menopause is classed as when your periods have stopped for a year. Peri menopause is all the symptoms many women experience prior to this as their hormone levels drop. Mind fog, lack of concentration, hot flushes, dry skin, irritability, lack of sleep, etc etc. Which is why HRT is recommended early.

TortugaRumCakeQueen · 29/12/2022 15:55

Thanks for replies! I've no idea what to make of it. Wondering whether I should ask for HRT to protect my bones? But I don't feel ill. I'm white. I don't lead a particularly healthy life style! Do walk a bit every day, in the summer I get my 10000 steps in. But I eat what I want, drink too much wine and am carrying an extra 2 stone I reckon.

Sounds like my entire life there - lack of concentration, hot flushes (well, I have never ever been able to tolerate even vaguely warm weather or places), dry skin, irritability, not sleeping - how would I ever notice?

Menopause is when your periods have stopped.
Peri menopause is when you are going through the process of your periods stopping, the hormonal change. A little like puberty.

Every time I read these threads I want Nandos 😁

Greenwish · 29/12/2022 17:29

@Hbh17 yeah, it’s just ‘made up’ 🙄 - what an ignorant comment.

yep. This is me at 53. Periods varying between 2 weeks apart and 9 weeks apart. It's hellish.

As in Peri peri sauce…

Imthegingerbreadwoman · 31/12/2022 23:13

I don't know if my mum is peri or started menopause as we are no contact so I don't know what to expect. I'm coming up for 31 so I know I still have a while. Can anyone tell me how you started to realise you where peri?

Firstbornunicorn · 31/12/2022 23:36

My ma was 57 before entering Peri - but then, I’m sorry to say, it was like driving into a brick wall at 90mph!!

George4567 · 31/12/2022 23:40

I'm pushing 60. Still going strong. Gynaecologist says 50 is just an average, therefore some of us will be late to the menopause party. Bloody wish it would happen soon though

strugglingdaily · 31/12/2022 23:48

53 and defo in peri. Went 10 months without a period and then all of a sudden they are every 2 weeks again and very heavy. Hot flashes have stopped for now. It's a nightmare.

CampervanKween · 31/12/2022 23:49

53 here and no signs of anything. Gutted absolutely sick of having such regular periods and can't wait for them to be over. No symptoms at all.
