Is there any way the I am not Peri yet, at the age of 53?

Posting here for traffic. I'm 53 years old, and still having regular periods. I have had no symptoms of Perimenopause. Is this normal? Is it possible that I haven't even started Peri yet? No sweats, no mood swings. The only thing I've noticed, is that it's now 5 weeks between periods, rather than 4. I was really hoping they would have stopped by now! I can't ask my Mum, as she's passed, although I think from memory, that she was menopausal at 51. Just realised that my next period is due when I'm on holiday, what a pain!

No I meant how does taking HRT impact life expectancy?

If you meant 'what's the exact difference in years', then obviously, that's impossible to answer

Using women in sub Saharan Africa as a basis for studies on ethnic differences is a bad idea - age at menopause is impacted by things like disease burden, especially stuff like malaria. I have no doubt that the average at menopause is earlier in places like Nigeria than in the UK. I do know that it is quite early in India, on average.

Do you mind quoting your studies based on sub-saharan Africans so I can critically appraise them. I also never said to base stidies on Sub-saharan Africans, I merely said that there are not enough studies based on women from this part of the world for obvious reasons.

I'm so happy to read this thread. I'm 54 and still have regular periods albeit they are shorter than before. From reading other posts and the Totes Merry Peri FB page I was starting to get a little concerned.

Touch wood I don't have any/many symptoms the odd night sweat and weight gain but nothing more than that. I'm not taking HRT as I currently feel fine which I'm truly thankful for.

Itisbetter · 01/01/2023 18:58

@InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream Is it impossible to answer? I would think it was fairly straightforward. Certainly life expectancy is available for other conditions treatment protocols. I assumed if you were taking it for life that was why and there was clear evidence that it helped or didn’t (for long term use it’s obviously helpful in early menopause).

I have several serious mental health conditions as well as autism. I’m ten pounds overweight, and don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables. My physical health is quite good compared to my extended and nuclear family. My mother was very overweight; my sister is an alcoholic, smoked tobacco heavily, and used marijuana regularly. An internist is a general practitioner for adults in the the States. She tossed off an answer, and asked me about visiting a gynecologist.

It's MY choice to stay on HRT based on the research I'VE done- if the evidence was that clear everyone would already be on it for life- I'm posting these replies as I feel many more women could be benefitting from HRT if their GP's were better informed about the risks and benefits, and were passing this information to their patients so that women could make an informed choice, as I have done.

Can u become pregnant if still having periods after 50.

My periods stopped when I was 56. I have no idea what "peri" is - possibly something made up to try to persuade women that there is something wrong with them. But you can certainly not be menopausal until well into your 50s.

LOL

peri is horrendous and extremely real, and many of us have been dismissed and ignored for years.

Bloody hell! I'm in the midst of peri at 51 - 2 weeks on/2 weeks off- flooding and pain galore- it's dreadful. I am so hoping it will be done soon! I can't keep on doing this til 60- really imagined it would be over soon. I was 11 when I started - literally 2 days after I started yr 7 (first year back in the day) Pfft! my sister is younger than me and has had 1 period in the last 2 years! My mum was done by 45- I'm stamping my feet - it's not fair!!!!

Have you thought about having a mirena coil fitted. It should get rid of all those symptoms and since they last at least 5 years should pretty much getting you to menopause.

ShornTheSheeep · 01/01/2023 20:26

@Bubblesdublin yes, periods are a sign you are ovulating

However, it would be unlikely. But it can happen and it has happened

Greengagesnfennel · 01/01/2023 21:35

My mum said she had no symptoms.
Periods were regular then just stopped one day at 55yo.

Hope she's not misremembering and fingers crossed that what they say about being like your mum is true.

Bubblesdublin · 01/01/2023 23:11

Thanks @ShornTheSheeep .

I understand that @InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream that’s why I asked you what your research was because it had obviously convinced you. I’m surprised there isn’t any clear data on life expectancy etc as it seems an obvious question to be asked before embarking on a decades of HRT. I wonder what the impact on dementia and heart attack is too. I think you possibly are seeing criticism of your decision where there is none. I was interested and looking for a quick share of information rather than critiquing.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 02/01/2023 13:03

@Itisbetter I see, sorry, I'm so used to other posters jumping down my throat that I'm obviously being over defensive! I do apologise. Whilst I'm afraid I don't have any useful clear links to hand, in my wanderings on t'internet it definitely seems to be the case that the modern transdermal HRT and micronised progresterone (utrogestan) don't carry the same blood clotting risks as older HRT, and together with the breast cancer risk being somewhat overstated, and the health benefits being understated, I feel like HRT gets a bad press.
Rather than women feeling like they need to be medicated, I believe women should think about replacing their depleted hormones so that their bodies can function at their best.

This is a bit long and fractured but an interesting summing up

Thanks, that is interesting, but whilst it does make some reference to transdermal oestrogen being safer than tablet oestrogen, it doesn't mention micronised progesterone, which is also thought to be a safer form of progesterone than the synthetic forms. That article is from 2019 and I dare say it will take time for proper new data to filter through.

Yes. Unlikely but (anecdote coming up, sorry) my grandmother gave birth to my uncle (her 14th and last child, in 1932) shortly after she turned 52.

Porcinimushroom · 04/01/2023 16:56

I thought the same at your age. Thay it was a breeze. Then I hit 53 , my periods started getting heavier. They then stopped , now 54 and fuck me, the hot sweats are like something else. I randomly break into a sweat and feel so hot I can’t breathe or focus.

so yes, you’re in it.

"You can certainly not be menopausal until well into your fifties" and something made up?! Wtaf.
