To cut yule log longitudinally?

Nimbostratus100 · 28/12/2022 11:32

Cut in half longitudinally, cut in half again longitudinally, so you now have 4 long pieces that each begin in one icing covered end, and stretch to the other icing covered end, then cut across the middle.

4 pieces, each with one quarter of an icing covered end and one eighth of the central cake

Surely that is the only way to do it? I was getting funny looks, and comments that yule log pieces are normally disc shape, but how can we each get a nice balance of cake and icing if you cut it all transverse?

That sounds rather odd and complicated Grin. You've spent too much time thinking about it - just eat the thing!

It's actually the opposite. It's incredibly logical. 🤪

speakout · 28/12/2022 12:38

I can't see how longditudinal cuttting is "fairer".
Surely the two slices from the outer edge will have frosting all along the length.
The bits in the middle will only havinng icing on the top.

Sliced in rings is better- not everyone likes frosting- DD and I would choose a slice from the middle because we don't have a huge sweet tooth- let those who do have an end piece.

Good gracious! If it were a very small Yule log you might do that. Personally I make branches on mine so their are actually four ends.

Will you marry me, you absolute genius?

ConfusedmumUC · 28/12/2022 12:40

I’m reporting this for crimes against Yule logs

Sukisal · 28/12/2022 12:41

I’m really scared to think what you’d do to a Colin cake.

Merryweather80 · 28/12/2022 12:42

Yule log
Fork

Job done.

What's this cutting nonsense you are waffling about?

Two branches makes the log fit on a standard supermarket round cake board.

This is quite disturbing in fact I go as far as to say the characteristics of a psychopath

YABVU for not alerting me to this brilliant idea last week when my Yule log was still intact! I've now eaten it the boring way!

HeddaGarbled · 28/12/2022 12:55

You’re a genius.

SinnerBoy · 28/12/2022 12:59

It wouldn't have occurred to me to do that, but it seems like a good idea. I haven't had any this year, as DW brought one from her bakery, which was soaked in sherry and some liqueur. As soon as she opened the box, the smell made me feel sick.

Anyway, Jule is from the 21st of December to the 1st of January.

StaunchMomma · 28/12/2022 13:07

I think you might have psychopathic tendencies, OP 😬

Well, I know what me and dd are doing this afternoon!

Thank you!

TheHauntedPencilCase · 28/12/2022 13:12

Wow, I didn't ice underneath mine so no! Mind you those pieces still feel big so maybe my log was big, not sure this was the first year I've had one. How do you cut up caterpillar cakes?

Tashface · 28/12/2022 13:13

Whenever I ate a slice, I put it in the microwave for 20 seconds, and served with double cream. The chocolate sauce all melted out and the slice sunk a little. The whole thing was just amazing 🤩

This is just the sort of thread that keeps me on Mumsnet🤣🤣🤣

Me too! I’m catching up on 200 work emails and this has really tickled me 🤣

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 28/12/2022 13:27

TheHauntedPencilCase is correct - it's still uneven your way. The top half sticks will have considerably more buttercream than the ones from the bottom half, which are bare underneath.

pizzaHeart · 28/12/2022 13:28

I wouldn’t do it, the pieces will look wrong for me more like long logs whereas I consider it a fancy Swiss roll and love the rolling look inside.
However my family will happily eat however it’s cut.

justasking111 · 28/12/2022 13:30

Just stick a pot of butter icing on the side and fill yer boots 🤣

ehb102 · 28/12/2022 13:39

@YouremywifenowTubs You are every welcome! I use Bourneville chocolate for my ganache. I find the Molly's brand makes it weep oil. Top tip: lump in the ganache do matters they block the icing tube. I won't be so hast text time.

UnicornMumcraft · 28/12/2022 11:38

Nooo, the person who gets the job of cutting it (me) gets the lovely end piece but it all needs to be cut into discs.

😁😁😀

UABU. Its the week between Christmas and New Year. I'm full of cheese and don't even know what day it is. Now is not the time for quarters, eigths, and words like 'longitudinally'. Just cut yourself however much you want and munch away quietly while I'm watching Call the Midwife.

This !!! 🤣🤣🤣

maddiemookins16mum · 28/12/2022 14:05

Before you destroy it, may I please have the end with the thickest covering. Thanks.

Dinneronmybfpillow · 28/12/2022 11:40

This is the sort of person who rolls up a slice of pizza then cuts it with a knife and fork.

Or bites into a whole KitKat rather than break off the individual bars 😱
