AIBU to think that this cartoon has the same twist as The Sixth Sense?

Spoiler alert added in the title by MNHQ after we had a few reports about the content of the opening post.

This thread is like a GCSE English Lit lesson where the teacher desperately tries to argue that the characters red dress is symbolic of blood lust or some such reach that the author never gave a moments notice to!
I truly don’t think the animation has any more to it than what you see at face value.
There was a whole hour preamble show about the author and the development of the animation and it was not so much as hinted that it was anything more than it’s basic premise.

It was like a weird combination of Watership Down and the Snowman, with someone shouting moral snippets at 5 second intervals.

This.

The amount of times I'd be sat in English Literature rolling my eyes at the teacher.

I think people are attaching more significance than is warranted.

It really is just a bunch of feel good quotes designed to help depressed people.

MissyB1 · 29/12/2022 07:24

I think some posters need to stick to watching Disney.

Greatly · 29/12/2022 07:26

I don't think you have to have a PHD in Literature to realise that it was odd, sanctimonious tripe. Works ok as a "live laugh love" on Facebook and that's it.

The wee boy can’t get home, can’t really remember home, never gets cold and the animals talk…the horse flies off into the sky…I’d say the point of it is friendship and also passing over to the other side. Lovely animation :)

Gonksmum · 03/01/2023 15:18

I found it quite comforting but no idea what the underlying allegories/ analogies were, if indeed there were any. I agree that friendship is a main theme, though. Illustrations were beautiful mind. I just let it wash over me!

Yep! You two are so right. 😂

I wanted to resurrect this oldish thread to comment that this has just won an Oscar for Best Animated Short. Still undecided whether or not I really enjoyed it or what were the deeper messages. I did find it calming and beautiful, though.

atthebottomofthehill · 13/03/2023 17:43

Ah no way! "Best animated short about a dead child"

TheSilveryPussycat · 13/03/2023 18:00

First time I found this thread. Watched the film at Christmas, turned it off after 10 min as nothing seemed to be happening. The animation annoyed me - being based on drawings with minimalist brush strokes, any attempt to render movement in 3D looked weird.

I had assumed it was based on a children's classic that I happened not to have heard of.

Catterbat · 13/03/2023 18:06

I think there’s some very entertaining overthinking going on in this thread 😂 I just saw it as a journey of self discovery. The boy doesn’t know who he is or where he wants to go, the animals show him. That’s all. I definitely agree the whole thing is odd and a bit creepy, but I loved it. It’s really strange and very different. And I love that people don’t quite know what to make it.

Yes that pretty much sums up how I feel about it. I have the book of the animation - so not the original but the reprint done to go with the show. Its beautiful and a nice calming read.

Oblomov23 · 13/03/2023 19:14

Watched it at Christmas. Thought it was really poor. And very woke.
Couldn't help thinking : why isn't he wearing a coat? I don't like his hair. Why isn't there a search party for him. At the end I just thought 'Is that IT'? What a load of drivel.

Laiste · 13/03/2023 19:21

Wot?

He's dead?!

I loved the animation of the horse (but then i just love horses). As for the rest of it - i found it made me uneasy. Cold. Lonely. As if something awful was about to happen.

DD lost interest and we just had it on in the background.

Exactly!!

And @Laiste many of us have had to assume he's really dead in order to make sense of the issues you're raising

Rainbowshit · 13/03/2023 23:31

I really like the original drawings. Thought I'd was a series of completely disjointed statements.

Boy: " I see dead people"

Mole: "dance like no one is watching"

Horse: " live, laugh, love"
