Is it just a snobbery thing?

I've just smelled a few of them in the supermarket and they were lush to be fair, so what's it all about??

They smell fine, but the texture of the body wash is awful - it’s like snot 😂

I do like the hand wash but it’s a bit of a crap gift. Like buying someone fairy liquid.

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 21:18

If you like the smell go for it. I have yet to find a smell I like.

SavoirFlair · 21/12/2022 21:18

People on Mumsnet are all earning six figure salaries, using La Mer moisturising cream, debating which private blend of Tom Ford is the best scent, claiming diptyque candles are “played out”…

The fantasists and projections in here are great fun.

In the real world, Baylis and Harding ? Nothing much wrong with them, but they are ubiquitous and in every chemist, department store and supermarket. This is why some may not like receiving it because it’s considered a bit universal, default, everywhere.

but yeah the smells are ok!

BigglyBee · 21/12/2022 21:19

I like it, but it is a zero-thought gift. Nobody who buys it has spent any time at all thinking about what the recipient really wants.

donttellmehesalive · 21/12/2022 21:19

I'm not a fan of their body lotion. It takes ages to rub in.

Keyansier · 21/12/2022 21:20

Why are you seemingly so concerned with what other people like or not?

I have to say I do find this quite tedious, because it works both ways. People claim something like "this attitude is snobby" without realising they themselves come across as condescending by trying to force people into liking things that they do (and it's often the cheaper things, because they feel like people not liking them is an attack on that - hence the snobbery comments)

MissPoldark · 21/12/2022 21:20

Usually smells nice but find that it really dries out my skin so don’t rate it for that reason

KangarooKenny · 21/12/2022 21:21

I just don’t think it’s great quality, yet it’s marketed as quality.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 21/12/2022 21:21

It's not that there's anything wrong with B&H, it's just a present that shows a lack of thought and effort.

bookworm14 · 21/12/2022 21:22

I wouldn’t buy it as a gift, but there’s nothing wrong with it - the bottles are quite pretty and the handwashes are great.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2022 21:23

Well I don't like the copycat of Molton Brown branding

But I also think molton brown is artificially scented fairy liquid too

Ocrumbs · 21/12/2022 21:23

Yeah I guess it's a bit like when someone gives you Thornton chocolates?

Choconut · 21/12/2022 21:25

I think it's absolutely fine to have for day to day use - but not something most people would want as a gift. I think that's what people object to.

Nagado · 21/12/2022 21:25

I’m not keen. I don’t think any I’ve tried are particularly good quality. I don’t think smellies are a very good gift unless you know someone is a fan of a particular brand or fragrance. And I don’t like their packaging. If they stopped trying to copy a more expensive brand and put that money towards improving the quality of the product, I might like it more. As it is, I’d rather have a £1 bottle of Imperial Leather.

But Baylis and Harding isn't cheap! I doubt you could buy a gift set for under a fiver!

minticecreamisjustok · 21/12/2022 21:28

It's very mild in scent compared to Molton Brown, the brand they are copying, it's disappointing. Don't mind a cheap handwash if smells nice but it's just meh.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2022 21:35

Um it's incredibly cheap - it's about one third more than fairy liquid

ColdHandsHotHead · 21/12/2022 21:36

There isn't much scent to the shower gel. I like a nice smelly one.

BahHumbug2022 · 21/12/2022 21:37

They directly copy the packaging of expensive brands but are cheap. Rendering them the inferior copies
If they stuck £20 on all they’re prices and only sold their products in Bayliss and Harding shops they’d be socially acceptable ( see Victoria Secrets, Next, White stuff generic but “ better”).

pompei8309 · 21/12/2022 21:39

Cheap and nasty not only money wise but smell and design , if you do want something of supermarket shelf Sanctuary is a better option

Invisimamma · 21/12/2022 21:41

I always thought it's just a budget copy of molton brown. It's cheap and nasty though, smells ok but doesn't lather and just slides off your skin. The lotion is greasy. I've noticed they've upgraded their package recently to look more upmarket.

I'd much prefer a bottle of boots own brand shower gel than bayliss and Harding.

Siepie · 21/12/2022 21:41

It's cheap quality products in expensive -looking packaging. It's not bad, I just think it's overpriced for what it is.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/12/2022 21:41

They're wanting to show that they are SIGNIFICANTLY wealthier than us plebs and their colleagues/family/friends love them far more than ours because they buy them expensive things.

They might not be super duper brilliant quality, but when your usual stuff is a £1 bottle of Dove or 59p essentials bubble bath because you can't afford anything fancier, it's fine to have something in slightly less plain packaging and with some scent to it.

pelargoniums · 21/12/2022 21:42

Isn’t it liquid soap stuff in bottles? I don’t like that whether it’s B&H pretend luxury at supermarket prices or ££££ Aesop stuff. But a gift set of supermarket liquid hand wash isn’t a treat really is it.

Marthaandthemuffins · 21/12/2022 21:43

This, absolutely.
