To ask why everyone on MN seems to hate Baylis & Harding?

Is it just a snobbery thing?

I've just smelled a few of them in the supermarket and they were lush to be fair, so what's it all about??

I don’t like either Baylis & Harding or Molton Brown. The formula isn’t right; B&H is too thin and kind of greasy, MB is too thick and over-scented.

thesnailandthewhale · 22/12/2022 17:55

It's the modern day equivalent of a pack of chalky bath cubes ...

StaunchMomma · 22/12/2022 18:20

When it first came out it really ripped off the Molton Brown bottles/packaging so I've always thought of it as cheap knock off.

I definitely wouldn't give it as a gift and I wouldn't be awfully excited to receive it, either. It's one of those items that men pick up in Boots with zero thought.

HitMeWithAHotNoteAndWatchMeBounce · 22/12/2022 18:26

It’s what you buy someone you don’t know very well as a Secret Santa gift.

Ireolu · 22/12/2022 18:40

It gives me hand eczema and I don't usually have dermatitis. Heavily fragranced and harsh. We r not fans. Got it a gift set from someone last year I donated it to charity.

Kualma · 22/12/2022 18:51

Nothing wrong with it. Just wish they’d stop labeling it as “luxury”.

It's a kind gesture to someone you don't know very well and they'll likely appreciate it

If it's a close friend or a relative then unless someone knows they really like B&H then it's a bit of a thoughtless gift.

yeah I agree... I wouldn't buy then for someone I knew well but I think their grait for secret santa or people you don't know.

BaileySharp · 22/12/2022 19:28

I like it OK but I'm not a moisturiser user and I feel like it's a bit of a wasted gift tbh...

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 22/12/2022 19:31

As something I'd buy for the bathroom, yes, but would be an underwhelming gift maybe? For work secret santa I got a big tube of L'occitane hand cream and it's lovely as it's not something I'd generally buy myself.

WavingCatpaw · 22/12/2022 19:39

It is quite useful to keep for when when you might need something for donation to a school fair. I’m pretty sure they get donated more than once due to the sellotape marks from the number that is taped to it.

Wrinklydinkly · 22/12/2022 20:32

I bought some bayliss and Harding bubble bath once, it smelled lovely, however, when I read the bumpf on the back it came with a health warning, bladder related. I appreciated the honesty, but didn't use it .and never will.

Hawaii4 · 22/12/2022 20:42

Yanbu. It smells nice and is affordable. Much nicer than carex etc imo, which seems to take my skin off.

Not everyone can (or wants to) afford Molten Brown.

Growingoldgracefully · 23/12/2025 00:42

Bayliss and Harding products made in China with inferior ingredients and chemicals. Harsh on the skin and drying high allergy content and smell cheap and nasty. Quality is shicking and some of tge sets not cheap. Avoid and boyfriends husbands blokes out there it would be better to buy nothing than a Bayliss and Harding toilet freshener fragrant body set! Not being snobby just dont like anything about their products.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/12/2025 00:45

It’s totally fine for every day - it’s what I buy for our bathroom and kitchen soap as an ordinary, regular purchase.

It’s just not really in the “lovely present” category.

ColdHandsHotHead · 23/12/2025 05:16

I’ve had a sniff at them and didn’t like any of the scents. I also can’t stand any Jo Malone scents. I like Molton Brown and Compagnie de Provence.

Sorry this is completely nonsense and is 100% derived from the bizarre MN hysteria about a completely mundane product.
As a pp said, it is not a great gift, I will agree with that, although at least it can be used, unlike some other 'novelty' gifts.
But to attribute all this nonsense to a bottle of shower gel which is essentially pretty much the same as any other shower gel, regardless of the price point, shows a complete lack of logic and someone who is somewhat brainwashed by brands. Sorry.

bookworm14 · 23/12/2025 07:29

Why did you bump a thread from 2022? Very weird behaviour.

Becclescake · 31/12/2025 23:01

Mushroo · 21/12/2022 21:17

They smell fine, but the texture of the body wash is awful - it’s like snot 😂

I do like the hand wash but it’s a bit of a crap gift. Like buying someone fairy liquid.

It IS like snot 🤣🤣🤣

RobertaFirmino · 31/12/2025 23:56

Not a fan of the shower gel at all, it's just as pp say, gloopy and slippery. The body lotion is far too thin yet takes an age to sink in. Never tried the handwash and would certainly give it a try.

I'm no snob, I get whatever is cheap in Home Bargains and I consider Soap and Glory/Sanctuary to be a treat.

Please don't bin your B&H though, take them to charity or give them to a food/beauty bank.

Peridoteage · 01/01/2026 00:13

They are budget price range and widely available in boots & the supermarkets... but come with big helping of delusions of grandeur - copying packaging styles associated with more expensive brands, even the name choice was a rebranding exercise to give an illusion of "affordable luxury".

Its a big marketing case study of how to package bog standard shower gel & handwash in a way that makes a lot of people buy it. It's very Hyacinth Bucket.

I suppose the question is would you rather pay (I assume) £3-4 for a product with delusions of grandeur or >£25 for essentially the same product (despite what some MNetters claim)?

Usually smells nice but find that it really dries out my skin so don’t rate it for that reason

This.

It makes my legs so dry that I get dandruff in my jeans after using it.

MartinCrieffsHat · 01/01/2026 14:02

LaurieFairyCake · 21/12/2022 21:23

Well I don't like the copycat of Molton Brown branding

But I also think molton brown is artificially scented fairy liquid too

Me too.
