Hi

I am wallowing in self pity. I feel unwell and have a very sore throat at one side. So much so it's hurts to move my neck, yawn or cough and if I sleep on a certain side I feel like I can't breathe. I'm taking pain relief every few hours but it isn't really helping except maybe for the first hour.

I have to go to work because if I don't, I don't get paid and I cannot afford time off. I just want to cry.

I am usually a shut up and crack on type.

Sorry for whinging ☹️

Have you had a look at your tonsils ? You might need antibiotics

KangarooKenny · 18/12/2022 07:42

Warm blackcurrant squash and Strepsils is my go-to for a sore throat.

Beautifulsunflowers · 18/12/2022 07:46

When are you back to work? Today or tomorrow?
If tomorrow spend today on the sofa watching films and keeping up with painkillers - maybe pop to a pharmacy to see if they have any throat spray and any other advice.
If you’re at work today could you afford to take half day? or even leave a couple of hours earlier?
Wishing you better soon

DustyOwl · 18/12/2022 07:50

Ahh, I’m so sorry, that sounds miserable.

It sounds gross, and it’s not great at the time, but I gargle with salt water! I had horrendous sore throats. as a child, and it worked. Or soluble aspirin, which is also great. I hope you feel better soon and you find something that works!

BCBird · 18/12/2022 07:54

Hand hold from me. It not whinging. Keep.warm and hydrated. Hope you feel.better soon.

ImustLearn2Cook · 18/12/2022 07:57

When I had tonsillitis the doctor advised me to gargle with salt water a few times throughout the day, every day. I also had antibiotics but the salt water really helped.

I’m sorry you are in so much pain.

Also, do you have dissolvable pain relief? If you do gargle it a bit before swallowing and it might be more effective at relieving pain.

Roselilly36 · 18/12/2022 07:57

Yep, warm blackcurrant squash is what I always have for a sore throat, I also recommend Throaties (usually pick up a few packs from Savers) I find they really help too. Hope your feeling better soon OP.

Mydogsbetterthanyours · 18/12/2022 08:01

Ive just started a thread on this. I have come to urgent care. Im on 2 really strong antibiotics for something else so if this is bacterial what the hell is it? Im worried and in pain.

Are you avoiding swallowing like me? You have my sympathy and solidarity!!

harrassedmumto3 · 18/12/2022 08:10

Oh, you poor thing. Sounds awful. I really hope you feel better soon Flowers

maltesersarethedevil · 18/12/2022 08:10

All of your kindness has actually made me cry! What a muppet I am!

Yes I am avoiding swallowing if I can, I'll try gargling now too thanks for the tip.

I joked last night about gargling with the oramorph I have for any gallbladder flares, but to be honest at this point I am seriously considering it 😂.

My daughter has been unwell for most of the month so I've been sleeping with her so probably caught it from her. She currently has a staph infection in her nose, delightful child 😉

Thank you for your kindness and letting me whinge.

If you have a Superdrug near to work they have ultra Chloraseptic throat spray. Only place I've found that reliably has it although Boots do sometimes.

KangarooKenny · 18/12/2022 08:15

I remember having such a sore throat that I couldn’t even swallow my own spit. I was spitting into tissues.
Its miserable, I know, but it will pass 💐

Mydogsbetterthanyours · 18/12/2022 08:17

Have you looked in your throat? I have a very noticeable white strip down the side that's painful...

Campervangirl · 18/12/2022 08:21

Ahh poor you.
I'm not well either, sore throat etc and the same as you I still keep on keeping on.
I gargle with soluble paracetamol then swallow, it seems to get right at the sore throat.
Take care of yourself

elm26 · 18/12/2022 08:28

Aww OP, you sound like you're having a tough time what with being poorly and your DD poorly too.

I hope you both feel better soon. Warm lemon water or warm blackcurrant squash, strepsils and gargling salt water. Keep on top of paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Sending a virtual hug! X

ThreeLittleDots · 18/12/2022 08:28

Difflam for strep throat

cocktailclub · 18/12/2022 08:34

Gargle with salt water is a good idea and alternate with a gargle of dispensable aspirin if you're not allergic to them
Try a steam inhalation
Honey and me in to coat your throat
I had severe tonsillitis until they were removed as a young adult and these things helped as did extra strength strepsiils and difflam numbs it

OriginalTheory · 18/12/2022 08:41

+1 on all the recommendations of the numbing spray. (And on the suggestion of checking if you need antibiotics!)

Being ill is miserable - get well soon!

maltesersarethedevil · 18/12/2022 08:48

Thank you all, I've tried to look (not very easy to do yourself when it hurts to open your mouth so wide). No white bits but one side is very red and swollen. I've taken 2x paracetamol, ibuprofen and 3x codine 🙈. I can still feel it but it not like swallowing razors now. See how long it lasts for.

Yes I'm at work today and everyday up-to Friday. I can't leave early I'm the (boss) only
key holder and it's retail.

Sore throats are miserable. Some great advice here. If it lingers do go and see the GP. I once left a sore throat for a week and eventually I had to go (was in agony like you) and the nurse gave me a right bollocking for not coming sooner as I not had full blown tonsillitis (for the first time mid 20s - hadn’t had it as a kid!)

FusionChefGeoff · 18/12/2022 09:18

You poor thing that sounds horrendous.

Perhaps wear a mask in work as you could be highly contagious.

maltesersarethedevil · 18/12/2022 17:51

I did indeed wear a mask!

One of my colleagues said my neck at one side is slightly swollen, is this normal 🤷🏼‍♀️

Robinonaspade · 18/12/2022 17:56

If you are having trouble swallowing, I'd get in touch with GP or 111 as sounds like tonsillitis. May need antibiotics. Also, gargling with dispersible asprin helped me, but I can't remember what GP advised.
Hope you get better soon.💐

Choconut · 18/12/2022 18:07

Strepsils were a bloody miracle for my covid sore throat.

maltesersarethedevil · 20/12/2022 21:09

Hi

Just to update you, I ended up at out of hours and diagnosed with Quinsy. I'm feeling much better after some antibiotics.

Thanks again for your kindness
