To think some rap music is sexualising very young women

Listened to some classic rap songs that I'd listened to as a teenager in the early 2000s, by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ludacris etc.
Realised there were lyrics that I hadn't picked up on before that are for want of a better word, noncey.
One of the songs by Snoop Dogg 'Beautiful' talks about 'looking like a student' .
Another one with Ludacris and Ciara talks about the woman being 'so young and fresh'.
There are more like this but AIBU to feel a bit grossed out?

Oh yeah for sure. I hated it as a teenager and young woman. I found it appalling.

SleeplessInEngland · 15/12/2022 12:47

Yeah, and in other news water is wet.

Don't listen to Dre's 2001 album!

User135644 · 15/12/2022 12:52

Don't forget about all the misogyny.

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/12/2022 12:53

I’m not sure anyone was ever looking to Snoop Dogg as an upholder of clean social values, were they?

It’s posturing. It’s part of the genre. Male rappers often fetishise a woman’s youth and beauty, female rappers often fetishise the size of a man’s bank account (and his gun, and his penis.) I wouldn’t listen too hard to the lyrics, if you’re easily put at unease.

StickyCricket · 15/12/2022 12:59

All genres of music from all times have noncey misogynistic lyrics.

My Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up for the touch of a younger kind

Happy Birthday Sweet 16
Tonight's the night I've waited for
Because you're not a baby anymore

Brown Sugar
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should

The Beatles - Run for your life
Well I’d rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You better run for your life if you can, little girl
Catch you with another man
That’s the end’a little girl

I could go on and on and on…

sjxoxo · 15/12/2022 13:02

Surely this is common knowledge!? Of course it’s degrading and shitty for women. Have you watched any music videos ever? If not, I wouldn’t recommend it 😉 I find it a bit shocking it’s still so acceptable that women are portrayed in this way in the music industry. In no other context other than a strip club would it be even remotely acceptable in 2022!!

RedRocketGirl · 15/12/2022 13:04

Errr have you ever listened to the lyrics of My Sharona or Take Me to the River? It's really not just rap that does this!

Jouto · 15/12/2022 13:23

Not just rap, a common feature in pop and other genres of degrading women, objectifying them, especially young women dnd girls. Both in the lyric and the music videos.
Its a societal problem, really not a music genre one about how girls and women are treated in society. The press do it too about young girls/women celebrities, Billie elish, Emma Watson, Charlotte Church (and far more) have talked about the change in attitude from the press when they turned 16/18.
Polanski has won awards and lots of celebs stand up for him, revere him. Lovely.

The whole thing, from lyrics to paparazzi trying to upskirt 18 year olds to rapists in our society being celebrated is all to do with how females are viewed in society. Second class, movies by a child rapist, awarded, celebrated, it's all very predictable and depressing. Art comes before women and girls.

WatchoRulo · 15/12/2022 13:23

Ahem

You're so hot, teasing me
So, you're blue, but I can't take a chance on a chick like you
That's something I couldn't do
There's that look in your eyes
I can read in your face that your feelings are driving you wild
Ah, but girl, you're only a child

FuckabethFuckor · 15/12/2022 13:28

Yeah. It's not just rap — in fact 90s and 00s rap is positively restrained compared with what used to go on with white blokes in the 1960s.

How about Young Girl by Gary Puckett?

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough

What a lovely sentiment. Not.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 15/12/2022 13:38

My H and I grew up listening to rap by Biggie, Dre, Snoop, Luda, and all of them. We used to have great fun trying to 'outrap' eachother. It was when we grew up and had daughters we realised the extent of the disturbing and quite frankly abuse-encouraging lyrics. Slapping women with their dicks, making them choke, making them scream, lack of consent etc. We have banned songs like that from the house. Can't believe I was so blind and thought these were acceptable lyrics at one point. My daughters will never be anyones 'bitches' or 'hoes'. Fuck those guys, they're animals!

purpledalmation · 15/12/2022 13:52

This has long been the case, and very disturbing.

Yeah... umm. You haven't noticed the rampant sexism and misogyny of large sections of popular music until just now?

Helendee · 15/12/2022 14:08

I’m so glad I grew up with the music of Sinatra lol.

EndlessRain1 · 15/12/2022 14:17

00s rap/ rnb is super rapey and offensive to women. I like to listen to it when I run, but I've found I can't condone it my listening to it anymore.

Well student to my mind is 18+, DEFINITELY 16+ so dubious but not paedophillic. Also young and fresh I'd assume to mean late teens /early 20s. So again, not "noncey".
Not justifying the music, def not my genre but you're examples seems to not support your argument

Or what they were actually doing with young girls in the 70s. Nevermind the songs.

Yep. Not to mention Elvis Presley who was 24 at the time when he started dating Priscilla who was 14 🤢

And they were regarded as an 'it couple'

StrawberryWater · 15/12/2022 14:38

Hate most modern rap.

Not much of a fan of older rap but I could at least understand it.

Now it's all ho's and asses and bitches.

neverbeenskiing · 15/12/2022 14:49

There is plenty of rap music out there that isn't misogynistic at all.

There is also plenty of misogyny in rock, pop and indie music, but you rarely see threads about that 🤔
